No real contest, I guess.

"What's Up" sold more :-)

Even I, even though generally considerably more into 4NB's genre than Cameo's, would choose Cameo here.

ts: gandhi vs. hitler

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ts. hitler vs. super hitler with lasers and fire breath

David Allen, Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd rather say it's Idi Amin vs. Hitler. I prefer Idi Amin (Cameo, that is)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Blount was right.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Word Up" is pretty much all I remember from the 80's.

Vote = Cameo

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

'word up' was beer-commercial annoyance in '80's; now it seems like absolute genius. i want to hear it again and again and again and again and again and again, even though the same experience 15+ years ago was torture.

Hahahaha, this is the greatest Geir post ever.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"candy" is better but yeah, some question.

g--ff, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Both make me want to violently cease all human life on this planet with all speed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I never did find out where I could get those shiny red perspex codpieces. In XXL size.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"Word Up" makes me flash back to my free and easy childhood, so Cameo bulldozes 4 Non Blondes.

Whatever happened to Linda Perry, anyway?

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Word Up" is the song that plays under the final credits of every movie ever released in the 1980s. True.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened to Linda Perry:

Not Pretty in Pink or Wierd Science, Tracer

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

However, Linda Perry is pretty in with Pink right now.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Word Up" sucks. I much prefer "I Just Want to Be."

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember when everyone in music production was obsessed by the snare sound on Word Up. 'Poch!' is how it went.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you wait ALL THE WAY TILL THE END, Nichole?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Who could notice the snare with that damned Morricone whistle thing going on though the whole damned thing? (OK, it was right up there in front, wasn't it?)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you wait ALL THE WAY TILL THE END, Nichole?

It was on constant TV repeat through mine childhood, dude. If I missed it each time, couldn't have blamed that on hysterical deafness.

(And no, tis not a complaint aginst deaf folks, FYI.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the snare sound on Word Up. 'Poch!' is how it went.

Surely more of a "Coche!" noise?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

DUBBUYA

O

AH,
DEE

UP!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Notice how the Smashmouth lead singer guy totally copped his entire singing timbre from "Word Up".

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Pity he forgot to grab the talent.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

or that freaky high rise flat top!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I like both these songs! I really do have the worst taste in music ever. :-(

"What's Up" is a really 'fun'* drunken 4-am on a porch singalong.

*by 'fun' I mean "obnoxious and make the neighbors [who are CRACKHEADS] call the cops"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, one thing I do like about the 4nb song is the really awful DJ mix starting right in on the high note. That raspy howl sounds a lot less "real" and a lot more hilarious when it gets moved to the song's first second.

Wait, isn't that how Pink (oh, excuse me, P!nk) got Linda "space goggles & Dr.Seuss hat" Perry to produce her product?

Note that Nicka would never do it, if he were sober.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
I'll side with He Man on this one.
