pending results, Air

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm cool with most of these except Roxy Music. Siren roolz.

I was gonna say the Modern Lovers, but they didn't even REALLY make a debut album. Does Elvis Costello & THE ATTRACTIONS (band being key) count?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

And Portishead isn't that much of a drop from Dummy if a drop at all.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I love the other Roxy Music lps but the first is in a league of its own

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ec&ta DOES NOT count

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Terence Trent D'Arby: I actually like Neither Fish Nor Flesh much more than Introducing the Hardline...

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Roxy Music's best album was their last one, not their debut.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

David Lee Roth

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Georgia Sattelites

Guns N Roses
New York Dolls

(there's a procession here)

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the second femmes album is as good as the first -- its the third on that slide into oblivion. the second is just more subdued and Christian oriented, hence its rejection a lot of times -- but its still great.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Nas is a good obvious one.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 22 November 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna
Pink Floyd
The Strokes

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 22 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Blount, in my mind, I shall erect a statue in yr honour, as my muscles are flabby and weak.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Saturday, 22 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Notorious BIG

(not that he didn't have good material after Ready to Die but I don't think anything else quite matched it as a cohesive album)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 22 November 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretenders

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The La's.

LFO (the ones from Sheffield)

d.w., Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

George Harrison

You do find 'Wonderwall Music' *that* good, Pete?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot about Frankie Goes To Hollywood. That's another obvious one.

Regarding La's, did they ever try to follow up their debut?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 23 November 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee's still working on it, last I heard. How long has it been? Ten years?

Mister Snrub (MisterSnrub), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"George Harrison"

Well done t\'t - that was a pathetic mistake on my part. I was, of course, reffering to 'All things must pass' which for some reason i forgot is his THIRD album, after 'Wonderwall' ('68) and 'Electronic Sound' ('69).
I can't be the first to have forgotten them though....

Pete S, Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

IMO "Cloud Nine" is just as great as "All Things Must Pass".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ELASTICA.

rainer mcnichol, Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Digital Underground
Tony Williams Lifetime
Derek and the Dominoes (sorry)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee's still working on it, last I heard. How long has it been? Ten years?

I thought hje quit for good.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Knack

John Fredland (jfredland), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Pretenders....hmmmm, I quite like Learning To Crawl...and whassup wit people hatin' on Watching The Clothes senselessly...that song is brill! It happens to me all the time, that.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange Juice
The Sundays

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 23 November 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe nobody said anything about the Pixies mention. I don't think 'Doolittle' can be called a let down by any standards.
And I'll second Anthony about Portishead. OTOH, I think Jesus And Mary Chain would qualify.

Seb, Sunday, 23 November 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Leftfield

And, tragically, Soul Coughing. So much wasted potential....

turkey (turkey), Sunday, 23 November 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Liz Phair.

dave - largehearted boy (largeheartedboy), Sunday, 23 November 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a feeling that the Streets will soon be in this category. What do you think?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Sunday, 23 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought that Soul Coughing's 2nd album was the good one. Not that I'm a fan of the band, but it's the only one I felt like playing more than once.

dlp9001, Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Dream Syndicate.

Surfer Rosa is the follow up to Come on Pilgrim

MerkinMuffley (MerkinMuffley), Sunday, 23 November 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM with disputing Pixies presence here.

Doolittle, Bossanova, Trompe.

Those are heavyweights.

gusbot (eternal_fields), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Swervedriver, Ride, Lush, Cro-Mags, Wu-Tang, Gravediggaz, Nas, Jeru The Damaja, Pharcyde, Tricky etc etc damn, this is pretty broad.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"Surfer Rosa is the follow up to Come on Pilgrim"

I was making my comment with Surfer Rosa as their official debut album in mind, since COP was only an EP. Either way, the argument still doesn't hold up as we all know Surfer Rosa is FANTASTIC!

Seb, Monday, 24 November 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Leftfield and Elastica OTM

Seb, Monday, 24 November 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Los Amigos died on their second. I haven't spent too much time with the third; it's an import-only right now.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 24 November 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

G-Love and Special Sauce.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 24 November 2003 07:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll stick up for Ride. Smile-Nowhere-Going Blank Again was a pretty damned strong run. They did fall hard and fast after that, though.

turkey (turkey), Monday, 24 November 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Book Of Love

turkey (turkey), Monday, 24 November 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like The Menace. Yes, I suffered head trauma as a small child.

Blount: rest assured that you can in all likelihood delete Air from your list.

My choices: Pete Rock & CL Smooth; Souls of Mischief (if you don't count Heiroglyphics' Third Eye Vision); Rinocerose.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 24 November 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

NO, lush's 'Split' is an incredible album, and far better than the stillborn 'Spooky'. I'd dispute the Sundays too, though I'm quite sure to be the only one who loves 'Static and Silence'

I'll say Lamb and Damon & Naomi.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 24 November 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Main Source, The Congos, Mighty Diamonds, Brand Nubian (In God We Trust actually was pretty good but it didn't have Puba)

oops (Oops), Monday, 24 November 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lamb? Say it ain't so! Fear Of Fours and What Sound are both fantastic; I fear the new one will be a full-on post-Goldfrapp turkey, however.

Oh, and The Sisters Of Mercy, by the way.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Spiritualized
Stereolab
Sundial

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha Operation Ivy

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Joe Jackson

The Cars

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereolab

They've made a few records better than their debut.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that Lamb doesn't fit here. And I was going to say Sisters too, but they made so much good stuff before their first real album. After First and Last though, it was never the same again.

Seb, Monday, 24 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream, Dubstar, Lloyd Cole

Rick Spence (spencerman), Monday, 24 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Omni Trio (if you count "Haunted Science" as his first real album)

If you count _The Deepest Cut_ as his first real album, I agree.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The B-52's
