When I played drums seriously, I read Modern Drummer, which was quite informative, but seemed to be in a timewarp (I am sure mr Rokket from Poison is quite adept but I didn't feel the need to read about him in 1996)...

When I got into synths I read Keyboard, but am now hooked on Sound on Sound. Are there any other ones worth checking out?

Computer Music is fantastic. Tons of free software, tutorials, in-depth reviews, excellent and clear design. Expensive though - it's UK based and costs about $13.50 in the US.

does it cover hardware too?

Pretty much no, unless it's hardware relating to computer music eg interfaces, sound cards etc. Personally I find it ('Computer Music') over geared towards the novice (lots of screen shot tutorials in how to get started with Reason and things like that...not that I've ever used Reason but I'm sure I could learn how to use it without one of those step-by-step tutorials).

Tape Op's still good.

Sound on sound is beezer -the website has a lot of great stuff archived too. The best bit is "Studio SOS" where the 2 guys from the magazine go around to readers' houses and put up duvets on the walls as acoustic treatment...
Not too impressed by any of the other mags myself -future music is OK sometimes, but pretty insubstantial. Computer music likewise -very beginner-oriented I find, and they spend most of the time evangelizing about how much better software is than hardware.

studio sos is cool. i am trying to remember... there is one magazine that has something similar, except the attention is paid to giving gear advice... is this studio SOS too? ...because many of the columns recently have just been about acoustic treatments.

They are all, without exception, salesmen in paper form. Kill, kill, kill.

Modern Drummer is pretty decent. I pick it up whenever they do interviews with jazz guys, which are often fantastic.

The review section has always been interesting too...they aren't really reviews, as they are never negative, but they to pick some pretty obscure albums to spotlight sometimes, lots of semi-local stuff.

"They are all, without exception, salesmen in paper form. Kill, kill, kill. "

-I would agree with you on all of them except Sound on Sound -when I mentioned the duvets business I was getting at the great thing about that magazine, that they offer way more advice than the other mags about working with what you've got. Of course there is an element of the gear fetish in there too, but they aren't too egregious on that front I think...

Um, and Tape Op. The only technical music magazine I can stand.

since sound on sound actually pay me for the stories i write for them, i'm gonna have to go ahead and say them too.

tape op is also great.

another vote for tape op, which i'd rate as the single best current music magazine, period.
