There was another thread about this, but I hoped it wasn't true. Now I can only say FUCK.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Before they shut down, everybody go download a song on the server, by the title 'I'm Secretly Jealous of Kurt Cobain'. Don't remember the performer/band. Trust me, you'll thank me fer it after the laugh riot to ensue.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

God damn it, why can't I buy the Things In Herds album???

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm been trying to phrase an online petition to make my displeasure known. I've been *trying* to be rational and civilized...
ANd it Ain't WOrKing!

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the guy from Empire Records! (the Cobain song)

I think I'm the only person on Earth who loves the Renee Zellweger song from ER.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to dl it, but I got a "file not found" error.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I got that the first time, it worked on the second.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Er... It's just a web site that stores files. Why is this so tragic? Getting web server place is so ridiculously easy these days...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 23 November 2003 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not "tragic", its broken. Why did CNet buy it, if all it wanted to do was kick off all its users/clients/customers/musicians/content?
end result of this deal:

- Vivendi makes no money.
- CNet makes no money.
- Thousands of musicians, who had access to the market have lost an income stream, and will be severely inconvenienced until they can get their stuff onto one of the other services.
- Thousands of music lovers, who might've enjoyed what was being offered are now cut off until all of this content (at least 3 terabytes) can be moved all over the internet.

and the big question is WHY!?
Why couldn't CNet just keep their grubby talons in their pockets.
They spent oodles of money on... what? To publically punch themselves in the scrotum and make a cosmic nuisance of themselves?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 23 November 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't comment on CNet's rationale, but the death of mp3.com was inevitable and as someone who's had music up there for years I can say good fucking riddance. The site's tenuous claim to merit was from the consumer's point of view, as it provided a fairly organized way to encounter new and sometimes shitty, sometimes cool content. And that's fine. From the artists' perspective, on the other hand, it was a constant narrowing of options as the venture realized that its business model was unsound. Since ad revenue was not going to sustain the site they elected to begin segregating their services into basic and "Premium" flavors, the first of which being very limiting and the second being to the tune of $20.00 a month. Any site that charges the suppliers of the content on which the site is built can go to hell.

Miggie (Miggie), Monday, 24 November 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The answer to the question why is bleedin' obvious Lord Custos - think how valuable a domain name mp3.com is! Think how much MORE valuable a domain name mp3.com is if you can actually find MP3s you want there!
