Recommend some new records/artists to Morrissey

after re-reading Word magazine’s interview with morrissey from earlier this year i was really struck by this quote:

“I worry that I find so much modern music atrocious, and unpalatable – because I do love music, and I want to like, and to be able to join in. I don’t want to come across as mealy-mouthed Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells but most people who are currently successful have absolutely nothing to offer. I long for someone to reach out and startle me, and say something that means something. I long for someone a little bit like me.”

first up i think morrissey would like xiu xiu.

i dunno why he just doesnt continue to stay at home and look in the mirror while he listens to his own records.

jed, i thought you were cool :(

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i think he genuinely wants to be turned on to some new records. maybe he's not satisfied with his friends saying "moz ya gotta check out tiger army you'll love 'em".

second recommendation would be the hidden cameras. don’t you think he’d highly approve?

rainer mcnichol, Sunday, 23 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nar, i don't think he'd be that much into anything that sounds like or is influenced by him. he's not a belle and sebastian fan innee?

Didn't he say he liked t.a.T.u.?

Anyway, knowing Morrissey's music taste, he'd probably love, oh, I dunno, Stacey Orricco or something.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mountain Goats came to mind, for some reason.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

same here. about the MGs that is.

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

antony and the johnsons.
the detroit cobras perhaps?

rainer mcnichol, Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the modern day equivalent of Northern Soul?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Who's the modern day Nico? T. Rex? New York Dolls? "Dancehall is vile."

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he might get into the Darkness. Or at least find them amusing enough to smile and get a kick out them. Is that the same thing as liking?

calstars (calstars), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

the aislers set.
wonder if he ever heard any huggy bear records.

rainer mcnichol (r. mcnichol), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

wasnt he a big fan of that indie band with the asian girl sonia whatever? i think that was just to make up for bengali in platforms though.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, he was an Echobelly fan, but that was around the time of the talk of 'The Morrissey Curse' - any band he was seen to be touting in the press turned to shit, pretty much. I think he used to like Radiohead, but they lost him after Kid A - I believe his words were "I don't see why they don't just get it over with and call themselves the Edgar Broughton Band".

Schwingung (Damian), Sunday, 23 November 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What, is he too special to just browse through the archives?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 23 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist, I kiss you

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the first time I've been kissed (on ILM). So that's how it feels.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe his words were "I don't see why they don't just get it over with and call themselves the Edgar Broughton Band".

That's some of the worst musical criticism I've ever read! (Nothing to do with insulting Radiohead or not, more like, 'Jeez, of all the bands to compare 'em too, why them?')

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

he'd like pas/cal cause they're great.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe he's on record as being a big British Sea Power fan.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

As for not liking bands that sound like him... Didn't he rave about the Smoking Popes?

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

>>>As for not liking bands that sound like him... Didn't he rave about the Smoking Popes?

deftones too. that 'get in the car and drive' song is the nu-metal song moz never wrote.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Im sure morrisey can't drive - unless he just learnt!

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he might like blonde redhead

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 24 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, he said the Smoking Popes' Born To Quit was a fantastic album, but he said When I Was Born For The Seventh Time by Cornershop was great in the same sentence, so I didn't take it seriously.
