hi, can people tell me more about this much touted lady singer? being a bit of an ignoramus, i haven't heard much of her musical repertoire, and i'm wondering what it sounds like (genre/style-wise). thanks.

The only thing that I am familiar with is the work she did with Herbert for the Bodily Functions album. The take was kind of a deep house album with a heavy trad jazz influence and heavy sample manipulation of body sounds. It was a fantastic album and it is definitely worth looking into.

I do not know what her song writing credentials are, but she has a beautiful sultry voice. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with her solo work.

Nihilist Pop Star (mjt), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

her first (?) solo album is upcoming in jan/feb on mute. it has an interesting cover of "come as you are" on it.

todd burns (toddburns), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

shes got a new album out within the month - she has a rather lovely single out called walk the line the b side of which is a good cover (in a big bang jazz w/ electronics style) cover of nirvana's "come as you are"

all the herbert albums except the first have dani on them - they're married which is rather nice isn't it?

x-post

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 23 November 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"walk the line" is easily the best song on there. i interviewed her the other day -- very nice woman. liked her a lot.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

sort of relatedly - i wonder what lucca santucci is doing. hes a great singer.

jed (jed_e_3), Sunday, 23 November 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

before bodily functions, she and herbert did an album together called 'around the house.' buy on sight.

arjun (arjun), Sunday, 23 November 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

she is great - i'll def check this new album out

stevem, Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Luca Santucci is on Plaid's "Spokes" album. He sings on the opener, "Even Spring."

paul c, Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

around the house is really really great

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 23 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

T. Weiss (Timmy), Friday, 16 January 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

See the excellent review in this month's issue of Uncut ;-)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 16 January 2004 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 16 January 2004 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(26th jan Arthur Russell, the necks and kerrier district - i will be so broke that week)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And don't forget that the Air and Amp Fiddler albums are also both out on the 26th!

Phoebe Dinsmore, Friday, 16 January 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna hear this, I was listening to "around the house" yesterday and it reminded me that she had an album coming out, now this thread, and uh, I wanna hear this.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 16 January 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

And don't forget that the Air and Amp Fiddler albums are also both out on the 26th!

The Amp Fiddler album's rather good, isn't it? I wish it would've been more house-oriented (even if they would've licensed I'm Doing Fine off Mahogani), but I'll take him any way I can get him.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 16 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Been waiting for this one to drop.
Her voice is soooo IT.

hector (hector), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I played bass for Factor 8, and Factor 8's singer/songwriter/guitarist was Mike Siciliano. He's a film student at Pitt now with a band called Stilyagi.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 17 January 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

am listening to the first track from the new album (the only one i have besides the single and the Nirvana cover) it is UTTERLY INCREDIBLE. This is gonna be good.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

what's it called?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the track is called "same" the album is called "likes..."

jed_ (jed), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

A really terrific record.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

She was quite brilliant at the Jazz Cafe last night.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 30 January 2004 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

ach! very jealous.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 January 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
This is really, really good... luscious and smooth, but does all sorts of unexpected things. Amazing on headphones, too.

Have to thank Marcello for the review, she might otherwise have completely passed me by.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 16 February 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i like this.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i like it too, though the more jazzy it gets the less i like.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

whats the track with the deadpan male vocals? thats great.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you mean "All The Above"

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yes. i am hopeless with titles.

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i liked this record more. way too npr.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i liked this record more

yep, know what you mean. It's an album I've played a lot the past 3 months, just trying to force a way too like it more than I do. It's alright and pleasurable but it never floors me...like say Bodily Functions. Having said that, 'Collaboration' is pretty special.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
OK, so I've been following a dizzying Arthur Russell - Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Etienne Daho - Dani Siciliano 'People who bought this on Amazon also bought this' - ILM search trail that has left me realising I know fuck all about music (or, I guess more accurately, that I'm at a major transitionary period in my tastes).

And I've discovered to my surprise that Dani Siciliano is playing in Glasgow this Saturday (at Cottiers).

Anyone want to go?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

im going yes - bizarre venue, and with Jazzanova too, which makes it doubly strange.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 17 May 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Sunday not Saturday.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I was extremely underwhelmed by her performance. I dunno why... I just felt it lacked subtlety (which Herbert's music has in abundance). Maybe I shouldn't have compared it with Herbert's music...

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh. Marcello - come back and encourage me again.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
borrowed this from a friend, listening now.. sounds terrif!

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

this might be the only time when someone has told me "oh, you'd really like this", whereas "this" = something i previously didn't know existed, and they were right!

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(ps i'm only on track three now)(actually not all that hot on the nirvana cover btw)

what other herbert things have come out this year? i've got a curious mp3 called "the beauty of the dream ended and etc etc", when/what is that from?

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"walk the line" is grIDMey

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, it just finished, the whole thing is indeed very good. it's less lite-jazzy than "bodily functions" even, which itself is well within the regulated limits i think

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what other herbert things have come out this year?

"On Your Feet" - Matthew Herbert (Lifelike 12")
"Let it Ride (Herbert's Strength Inside Dub)" - Lisa Shaw (Naked Music 12")

JoB (JoB), Friday, 29 October 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...
