Anybody know anymore about these guys? Saw 'em last night open for Jayhawks. They were incredible. I was dumbfoubded. I know they have four or so albums-what's their best?

I saw them open for the Mekons under the name "The Nelsons" (or something like that), a Mekons tribute band! I didn't know that they were the Sadies until a friend told me so. I wonder as well whether their original studio stuff matches their live performances. Has anyone out there heard the Sadies/Jon Langford album???

Revive this thread on Monday, and Huckleberry Mann will tell you all about them.

And they back up Andre Williams on an album!

Thanks, @d@ml. I'll do that.

The Sadies have that ability to just absolutely knock you back live, particularly if you haven't seen them before. As a result of their family ties, the brothers Good have been steeped in music and can confidently handle any style, it seems. They are psychedelic monsieurs; their rhythm section smokes and they often give you more in an hour than most bands do in endless two-and-a-half hour sets. (cf the gbv marathon I witnessed last night.)

If you are fortunate enought to see them in a venue with an able soundboard operator, then you will hear the Sadies with the vibes, which is a sublime experience.

Did somebody call my name?

YOU MUST (run over your mother if need be) GET YOUR HANDS ON STORIES OFTEN TOLD!!!
And supposedly there's a new ready to come out that they made with Rick White (of Elevator) that should be v. cool.
Best live band in the whole world. At least playing in clubs right now.

indeed, best live band around. Well, around Toronto, anyhow. I wish that the Deadly Snakes played more often, to compete with the Sadies. Both terrific bands. Them Sadies do Psychedelic Byrds style stuff, country-gospel raveups, a great swampy Gun Club cover, some Ennio Morricone sound, stomping instrumentals, lots of good variety. "Stories Often Told" is probably my favourite of their albums so far, too, but maybe a bit heavier on the country-psych sound than the earlier albums. If you really go more for the instrumental numbers, you should probably look for "Tremendous Efforts". But they're all good records.

'Stories Often Told' and 'Tremendous Efforts' will prolly best recreate the Sadies live experience in yr own home ('Tremendous...' features 'Love GOne Look', which - for me anyways - is always the high point of the live show).

back in the UK in Dec. can't fuckin' wait!

I'm inclined to agree with Huckleberry Mann (sadies = best live band in the whole world) for the following reason: every time I see them (six, seven times now) they play Goffin/King's "Wasn't Born to Follow" and they absolutely NAIL it every time, psychedelic sprawl and all. The harmonies are perfect and it's as close as anyone's come to distilling into four minutes the very essence of what I'm seeking when I go to all these shows and kill time standing around with a plastic cup in my hand.

I like how (at least at the shows I've seen) they always introduce each song with "And now the Sadies will play...."

almost always in suits, too.

sadies = pros

look up a young band called Cuff the Duke too. I think the Sadies took them on tour this spring.

one year passes...
So I guess the Sadies have a new 7" coming out, with two songs sung in French!

I've only heard 'Pure Diamond Gold', which I bought to hear 'Eastwinds'(best song ever). Many of the other songs sounded cool but too samey next to each other and I haven't really checked them out since.

tremendoid (tremendoid), Saturday, 19 March 2005 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Have to say the new album is a little disappointing - some nice songs but a bit samey. Stories often Told was terrific though, with plenty of variety. And they're fantastic live. Did a glorious cover of the Ramone's Here Today Gone Tomorrow.

two years pass...

the new record is the one you've been waiting for from the sadies. byrdsiness is turned up to 11, but there's lots more variety than the earlier records. it still doesn't touch their live show (even that live album, good as it is, doesn't begin to do therm justice on that count) but it's the best sadies record yet by far. very pretty, sad and stoned
