Fiuczynski's Headless Torsos - Amandala

This is a nice avant-fusion 2001 release. Fiuczynski uses a lot of delay and distortion with this OTT tremolo wailing that stays just the right side of cheese for me, sometimes sort of bending notes out into space and spaced-out feedback, sometimes wailing in this post-Hendrix rock god way against an intricate mix of standard and Latin percussion. "Shannon's Kitchen" has an utterly classic riff. "Kiss that Whispers" is an awesome investigation of noise and rhythm. Please discuss [as well as discuss more present-day jazz, incl straight-ahead stuff].

There's a young guy at work who loves the 'Fuze' (and similar geezers like Wayne Krantz and Scott Henderson) but I just can't see it myself - ok, awesome chops and whatevah, but I hate the sound of the bass+drums on modern 'fusion'/funk recs, and the singing, where there is any, is ALWAYS horrible. Sorry Sundar, give me Eddie Hazel on a Funkadelic rec any day of the week.

he has a new band now called kif, who are okay but maybe a little too mellow. saw the torsos play once and d.f. really blew me away. technically an awesome player but augmenting his playing with really great fucked up bends, weird tapping and other bizzaro stuff. impressive.

Well, there are no vocals on this album. The bass and drums are pretty solid-sounding, not really compressed or anything (assuming that's what you dislike). Eddie Hazel was awesome too but they're different. Or are there Funkadelic records where he does delayed-out feedback bending with a more loose rhythm section? I only have two.

six months pass...

Wait, now I've heard the Screaming Headless Torsos' 1995 (or at least the first two tracks), which seems awful for reasons similar to what you gave. Like a lamer Red Hot Chilli Primus with horrific rapping. If this is the kind of thing you were exposed, please do give Amandala a chance. It's very different.
