So, come on then, The Muppets always seemed to getted referenced around these parts, so gimme some opinions.

Personally, utter, ultimate, unimpeachable classic.

Also, who is *influenced* by The Muppets' music?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 23 November 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

The greatest band ever. I might have even started a thread on them with that exact title!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

more classic than classic. the first rock band i REALLY fell in love with.

i think Dr Teeth = Dr John and Janis has like a Joni Mitchell thing going on. i think there is a Waddy Wachtel lookin muppet. but the real genius behind alot of muppets music is JOE mutherfucking RAPOZO.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

the most classic thing ever of all time.

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

One of the unsung great bands, versatile enough to accompany everyone from Charles Aznavour to Roy Rogers to Alice Cooper to Dizzy Gillespie.

I used to live around the corner from Jim Henson on London; we'd run into each other in a pizza place on the high street and get to talking. Some other Dr. Teeth trivia that he imparted:

Dr. Teeth was indeed based on Dr. John, specifically from his performance in "The Last Waltz".

Janis=based on Joni Mitchell visually, with voice based on one of the muppeteers' ex-girlfriends.

Zoot=named for saxophonist Zoot Sims, who was renowned for his dry wit.

Floyd Pepper=bassist who played left-handed and wore a Sgt. Pepper jacket as an homage to Paul McCartney. Janis also played left-handed, a decision made for visual symmetry.

Animal= based on Keith Moon, of course. In the Muppet Show episode where he has the drum battle with Buddy Rich, Henson brought in legendary British jazz drummer Ronnie Verrell (Stephane Grappelli, Cleo Laine, Ted Heath) to play Animal's part so that he'd have someone who could actually give Rich a run for his money.

Has it come to this?

I'm going to see classic if only for Animal (who really belongs in another band).

Sub-thread: Taking Sides: Electric Mayhem vs. Banana Splits vs. the Archies vs. Josie & the Pussycats

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Second only to the Archies.. One of the most important musical acts in my life

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex -- have you ever wasted time delving around in the Encyclopedia Fakebandica?

http://www.fakebands.com/index.html

If ILM has reached the limit of debating the merits of bands that actually exist, here's a whole new list to ponder. Althoughthe Archies and Banana Splits actually released records, which makes them at least as real as Britney Spears.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Sunday, 23 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

I always thought that Animal also had a little Mick Fleetwood mixed in with the Moon. Fleetwood would make the goofiest faces and those looks from his eyes...

s1utsky (slutsky), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

and Rowlf = Tom Waits

janice = kim gordon

has it come to what, alex?

Just a joke....as if to suggest that we'd run out of actual bands to debate over and were now discussing the merits of fictitious ones.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

ahh! sorry, I get defensive about the muppets!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

No worries.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Animal= based on Keith Moon, of course.

I thought it was common knowledge that Animal was based on Mick Fleetwood. Or is it my imagination?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 24 November 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I always thought Keith Moon was based on Animal.

David Allen`, Monday, 24 November 2003 04:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

my buddy Jeff had
an Animal doll suspended
(Christ-like) on bass drum;

everytime he kicked
Animal would fly up, down--
this was FUCKING COOL

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 24 November 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Animal = Fisher Rose

gusbot (eternal_fields), Monday, 24 November 2003 05:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sorry, that's just for anyone who saw the last Destroyer tour.

"Just a joke....as if to suggest that we'd run out of actual bands to debate over and were now discussing the merits of fictitious ones."

Shall we get into a debate about 'fictitious'?

Compare and contrast Gorillaz, The Monkees, The Ramones etc.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Glad it's all so positive.

They might just be the one band that I can say I love without fear of feeling I'm wrong.

Influences: how's about Flaming Lips, Daniel Johnson and Gorillaz (obviously) for starters.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 24 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's a totally loco Soca version of the Muppets Theme song, it rules!! (dunno what it's called tho)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

You're parsing terms, Jim. While there was indeed an amount of artifice involved with the Ramones (specifically the fact that...::gasp::...they're not really brothers at all!), they were a living, breathing, touring entity (unlike Dr.Teeth, Josie & the Pussycats, et al.)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

alex have you not seen the muppet movie?

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ma-na ma-na

christoff (christoff), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Ramones should've had their own cartoon series. (Where they solved crimes.)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

they could do a crossover with the mr. t cartoon team!

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 24 November 2003 19:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who wants a *real* band anyway?

Plus, Jim Henson = Dr Teeth like Jeffey Hyman = Joey Ramone.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

My favorite Electric Mayhem moment is their cover of "Little Saint Nick" on the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas LP. 'Tis the season. Almost.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 24 November 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

the bORedoms: pop tatari, is of great Electric Mayhem influence

kephm, Monday, 24 November 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Cuz there's nothing out there you can't do,
Even Santa Claus believes in you..."

Great stuff. "Can You Picture That" is so in my Top 500. "Movin' Right Along" wasn't so bad either.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

Always get to these threads too late....

Muppets: Classic---were the Granddad of happy kitsch.

Shonen Knife were influenced by Electric Mayhem, definitely.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dude a Ramones cartoon would rule... every so often they could do a cross-show cameo thing with the Fat Albert crew... solving crimes, playing punk shows where instead of saving the orphanage they let all the kids out and give them cool haircuts... god it would be awesome! And they would be obligated by the genre to ride around in a wacky car at least once every month or so.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

What about the Riverbottom Nightmare Band. They're CLASSIC.
Can someone post a picture with all the players from Electric Mayhem?

Magic City (ano ano), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

What about the Riverbottom Nightmare Band. They're CLASSIC.

BEYOND classic. But there's some bastard band that stole that name which are not the real deal, and I am sad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

eight years pass...

thought for a long time that Janis was based on pre-smack Nico!
