I'm glad someone else likes the Will Young tune!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no such thing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't believe people like the No Doubt single - seems really lazy to me

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, I love the whole Will Young album. Though there's nothing quite as 80s-pop-balladtastic as Leave Right Now on there.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think there's much to dislike Steve, it's just there's nothing really added either. The video's annoying.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 24 November 2003 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i think the video clouds my judgement slightly

William, that #30 guess for Shania, is actually my #35 guess. I fucked up a bit.

Guess for the bonus round will be #39 - Emma Bunton. (Didn't steal completely..)

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

MIDWEEKS SEEN - BETTING ENDS

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

In what universe is the second day after the singles go on sale a "midweek"!?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea where i would find the 'midweeks' anyway let alone on a tuesday

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh... Wes puts on comedy north-east accent shock...! :-/

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Classic Chilli Peppers..."

Right, OK, back on the Hatorade again.

Note that first interview applies only to the singles chart.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell. Alex Parks' version of Mad World is so much better than Gary Jules. Her voice is... wonderful. Jesus.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary J #40.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wes, bloody shut up about bloody 'TOTP'! Grrr.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So, since I never got a response regarding this last week, I still wanna know if I'm the only Yank involved in this thread on Sundays. Anyone? [Listens for echo...]

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Room 5 #38 (not in the picks)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

#35 - Blue

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No points so far.

Inskeep - no idea.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And we get the Dido single *in full*... *again*. Thanks a lot, Wes... grrr.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee #30. Still no points.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And THERE GOES THE INTERVIEW!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ten for Neil and Tom.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That interview was exactly as painful as you'd have thought. Except more.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'd be known as 'We' then"... (cringe)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop playing fucking "Where Is The Love"! Just STOP, for the love of God!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they have to, really. It is the longest running single on the chart, and they have to play the significant tunes every week regardless of what they skip.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Robbie Williams, obviously.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

So that's why we're forced to hear Dildo every week, then.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Gawd... what have we done to deserve _this_...? Wes leading gormless 'Manches-doar!' yelps. He loves his 'accents' does Wes.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, as unctuous as Scott Woods could get as times, he was never as bad as Wes (and his interviews)... is the chart strictly oriented towards 13-year-old girls now?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Scott Woods?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it Scott Woods? Did I get the name of the old presenter wrong?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark Goodier? Scott Mills?

Coral #23 - 1 for Fishman.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, one of them. And to think it's only been around a year since Wes took over...

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, Scott Woods runs Rock Critics.com. Doh!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Jamelia ever going to fall by more than about three places? ;-) It still remains a fine pop song.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark Goodier used to be the regular presenter, with Scott Mills as the reserve. Then Goodier left towards the end of last year, and they had Radio 1 DJ's filling in for a week at a time till February, with Mills doing the last month of shows before Wes took over at the end of that month.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone else think this Jamelia single keeps sounding like it wants to break into a sample from "P.Y.T."?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Meatloaf #21 (not in the picks)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"P.Y.T."?
Did they ever actually have Tim Westwood filling in...? That would have been wonderfully odd!

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, good God. Meatloaf: proof that health problems are still the best insurer of increased chart performance and sales. You know, we Yanks don't always have the best taste, but at least we've thrown out the moldy Meatloaf. ;-)

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I never heard Westwood; Peel was supposed to do it one week - talk about wonderfully odd! - but they then decided to stick with Mills instead.

"P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" by Jacko. The keybs in "Superstar" keep sounding all "P.Y.T." at various points to my ears.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

No Doubt #20 - 1 for Alex.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope I didn't appear to be insulting Brits in general. Generally, the UK Top 40 is FAR superior to that of the US.

Oh, no, Scott Mills at breakfast?!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't the Talk Talk hit earlier than 1990...?

How would you pinpoint the reasons for the UK chart being better?

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"It's My Life" was from '83, but didn't make the top 20 until 1990 in a re-release.

I think in general, the top 40 singles in the UK in any given week are finer than the 40 US singles. I mean, Dizzee and Jaxx and Lemar (loving "50/50"!), for starters, whilst we're stuck with 3 Doors Down and Train and, well, endless Pop Idols. I guess sometimes, mediocre taste is universal. Yes, there's dross on both sides of the pond, but I think often, the better stuff in the UK chart is so much better.

BTW, anyone know if Gareth's new single, "Say It Isn't So," is a Hall & Oates cover?

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The UK chart generally just seems more receptive to more interesting records. Belle & Sebastian, for instance, have had 5 UK Top 40 singles(No, that IS NOT a bad example), and like you say it is difficult to see Dizzee having US success comparable to his British chart positions.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The British album chart I suppose seems deficient in comparison to the US in that Jay-Z and Outkast do so poorly in comparison.

Yeah, Belle & Sebastian, Pet Shop Boys, Dizzee Rascal... these are all positives for the UK singles chart that you wouldn't get presently in the US.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

ah man, No Doubt shoulda been number one. Meat Loaf rules, btw.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

That's exactly it, Williams. And yes, Tom, I'd agree as well re: the album chart. Though that bloody Rod Stewart album is a hit everywhere, it seems.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, William, I meant.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, it changes more often. The US Top 20 is very static.

Bizkit #18.

Blink-182 #15 - me 10, Joni 5, Steve and flowers 1.

MAI-DEN #13.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm undecided about it... quite a respectful cover of a good song, reasonably handled. I particularly liked the percussion; just the right touch. A lot depends on whether one likes Gwen Stefani's voice...

#13: Iron Maiden... why, in 2003? Guess it's this annoying rawk fad we have here.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Perfect example here: I love the fact that Maiden STILL has top 20 singles in the UK! They're just so... Maiden! ROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAARRRR!

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Iron Maiden always chart!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Fanbase, Tom, Fanbase. See also 'Ocean Colour Scene's last single in the Top 40, Why in the fuck was'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the rock fad is like 50 years old.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but recent years have seen the success of 'nu-rock' with attendent pop rawkers like Busted, Good Charlotte, Blink, Amy Studt etc... it all seems to be popular; look at NME.

Outkast still in the Top 10! :)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

What's with the Ja Rule in the top 10?? Gladly, it seems his star is falling - fast - over here. Oh, whoa! Though I must give it up for the Toto sample! *immediately loses any cool points he had heretofore*

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Zha Zha Rule #9 - Me, Fishman and Flowers 5, Joni and Ed 1.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Pearce Quiz - ID three Basement Jaxx tracks.

The mix of tracks begins thus:

"Red Alert, Red Alert, It's A Catastrophe..."

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What do people think of the Jacko record? In parts, I like it musically; the circling synths of the chorus... yet, his vocals are just irritating.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh there is a god. Brave young Will has vanquished the evil Alfie. Praise be!

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jacko #5 then, #2 the really terrible Shane Ritchie cover... #1 Young.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 30 November 2003 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Thrills - #45. Only Radio 1 A-Listed song released last week an' all.

It gets Alex a point, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)
