They're both very pretty and they're both about smack, innum?

"Into your arms" is a cover, isn't it? I marginally prefer "There She Goes", but i must stress that it is one of only three Good La's Songs (Mavers is a hideously overrated songwriter IMHO). Dando is more worthy of the "songwriting genius" tag, but he has sadly been written out of history a bit.

Is it? Damn fucking SLSK - never get the songwriting credits with the tunes...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 23 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently it was originally written (and recorded) by Robyn St Clare of the band Love Positions, although I've never heard it.

As recorded by The Lemonheads 'though, I far prefer it to "There She Goes".

robyn st. clare, also of the hummingbirds, is one of a trio of australians who propped up evan dando in the second half of the lemonheads' career (original lemonhead ben deily was there to prop up dando earlier in the band's career). dando also got songwriting help down under from tom morgan and nic dalton, variously of smudge, godstar and sneeze, not to mention love positions. and every one of those aussies is a better songwriter than lee mavers.

Timeless Melody to Thread!

Oh please! The La's win this every damn time!

"there she goes" absolutely wins this one. that one was god's gift to lee mavers. i'm just saying that the rest of the la's output pales before the rest of (take your pick) the lemonheads output or smudge's output or godstar's output or the hummingbirds' output.

"into your arms" is not even slightly about heroin for fucks' sake. but i also think it's one of Robyn St Clare's lesser songs. search the Love Positions and Hummingbirds albums, far more enjoyable than Dando's own compositions.

i don't understand the Mavers comparison

it's easy to imagine "into your arms" could be about heroin when sung by dando, though.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah well dando could sing happy birthday and make it sound like a paean to crack

the surface noise (electricsound), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Word Gets Around" beats both of 'em.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 23 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

yayy

(altho' i rate "blush" highest of all... and robyn co-wrote it too!!)

I like Lemonheads, and putting them up against a classic like "There She Goes" I don't consider fair. La's of course :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 24 November 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"There she goes" Always reminded me of "Here comes another one" by Monty Python".

I mean, every time I hear it....

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, "Into Your Arms" wins, just cos "There She Goes" has had its original "timeless" charm bludgeoned out of it by cloying overexposure and knee-jerk canonisation. Better karaoke tune, too.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 24 November 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I never thought "Into Your Arms" was about heroin either, actually....

"Golden Brown" by the Stranglers....now THERE's a lovely song about heroin!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

...likewise "Don't Bring Harry".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 November 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemonheads by a mile. Next time you hear the Las, think of Graham Nash.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 24 November 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

think of Graham Nash.

Are you trying to put me off my food?
