Jazz Is The Teacher

3mb featuring Juan Atkins. Juan Aktins, Thomas Fehlman and Moritz Von Oswald put out a future jazz techno record in 1993. DX bass shuffle, wild pitch strings, georgeous chord hits and swung out percussion. Deep space grit, it is every Detroit cliche and it is fantastic. The Magic Juan Edit has been on winamp loop for the last hour. slsk at once.

That entire 3MB 12'' is bananas. I'm partial to "The Cosmic Courier" myself.

i have to guess that the opening five posts of this thread are better than the record itself

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i like this, although i think i might have the wrong version cause i can't really hear much in the way of strings, unless theyre that noise that sounds like crickets chirping

Metal is the creature, punk is the feature! IDM is the beaker, house is the streaker!

Juan is the Originator, Derrick is the Innovator, and Kevin is the Elevator.

I think you have the wrong version Robin, the strings fade in after 20 seconds. They are in the beginning and the come in for the second time around 5.25. The Juan Mix lasts 9.40 seconds.

i have to guess that the opening five posts of this thread are better than the record itself

You should give it a shot, it grows on you. It is interesting to see what happens when you put those three into a studio. It is one of the few things Juan did in the 90's that I cared for.

"The Passage" is a great Juan record from the 90's. Boy was he stoned when he did that one. And boy, was I stoned when I listened to it.

theres not much jazzy about it thankfully - its a great record.

oh i was just kidding mike. i will download it tonight in fact.

Another good 90s Juan track: "I Wanna Be There," lush 20 minute vocal epic with big splashy synth flanges.

I don't think "Jazz" is great great, but it's pretty good and I kept it around through various purges. It's the rare jazz-dance record that isn't bland, probably because the jazziness is in the swinging drums, rather than saxophone samples or dodgy vocals.

One of my favorite Juan tracks period is Infoworld from the Ocean To Ocean EP on Transmat. I still think that is one of the best things he has ever done. That track has some of his best DX100 programming ever.

Another thing I liked that never got much press was the Model 600 record he did a couple years back on Metroplex. I don't know much about it, but the rumour is that Mike Banks gave him a hand with it. It is super grungy minimal electro with Juan talking over the top of it. I guess it finally got a regular pressing but for the longest time you could only pick it up as a white label from Submerge. I need to go down there one of these days and do some record shopping.

I think the Infiniti stuff is some of his best ever. Some of the Skynet album is brilliant, like "Body Oil", "Higher" and the title track.

Colin 's OTM re: "The Passage".

I just realized I am completely full of shit, I downloaded a copy of Deep Space because I had not heard it in years. Milky Way just entered my Top 5 Detroit tracks of all time.
