How many times in a row do you generally listen to records?

I find, for recreational listening, I tend to repeat the album at least once, unless it's awful. Part of the reason is because it's just so easy to just flip a record or repeat a CD and get back to whatever it was you are doing. But I do find the second listen through to be rather important.

For reviewing, I always try to listen at least twice, if not three times. One time I gave a record a fairly negative review after only listening once (I was swamped at the time) - Anyway, the review goes to print, and two months later I'm really, REALLY into said record. I won't tell anyone what band it was but if I ever meet this band I will formally apologize.

Who do you generally review for? Localized or larger?

i would never listen to the same record (and certainly the same song) more than once in a sitting. i have been known to listen to a newly made CDR compilation two or three times in a row though

if i'm really listening to it and not doing anything else i'll very rarely put it back on afterwards.

cs - I review for a bunch of mags you may or may not be familiar with (Grooves, Your Flesh, Resonance, Skyscraper, Urb), and do a weekly music column for a Michigan based newsweekly. Nothing major tho - have actually been thinking about giving up writing, at least professionally. It's brought no fortunes.

I'm very familiar with Urb at least. They generally offer correct opinions. I buy techno/electronic/imports for a record shop and my own strong opinions. what's the last Urb review you submitted?

i rarely listen to records two times in a row - if i feel like i wasn't paying attention to something really good, i'll put it on again (which i did last night with crucifix - dehumanisation) and give it a go.

i frequently listen to things more than once a day, though, just not usually back to back. especially with new albums i enjoy i'll listen to them once in the morning, once in the evening, until i become familiar with them.

I rarely listen to any album more than once in the space of a week, much less in a day or twice in a row. less an issue of attention span than about wanting to keep it semi-fresh for as long as possible, I get worn out on records I like really easily if I don't pace myself.

It all depends if a song or album catches me and makes me want to hear it again. If an album gets to me, I will on occasion give it two or three listens, but it is a rare occurance.

I sometimes question whether or not I like a record if it doesnt make me want to listen to it at least 3 or 4 times in the first week I have it around.

I switch cds every 2 minutes

Usually, the only time I'll listen to a record more than once in a single sitting is if I've just bought it and want to listen for everything I missed the first time.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 24 November 2003 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I find I'll listen to a new purchase twice in a row (usually the journey home from work, then the journey to work the next day) then move on to other CDs and play that new purchase a few more times during the week or so. THe last record I played incessantly was the recent Kraftwerk LP which stayed in my CD player for about a week and a half without a thought of moving onto something else, but then I found I had no compulsion to listen to it again for quite some time.

I can sometimes listen to individual tracks a few times in a row - I had "At 11'o clock" by Purple Ivy Shadows on a constant loop the other day walking around Sainsburys - but it doesn't happen that often.

About 1247557.2345 times- approximately!!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Monday, 24 November 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorta depends on what I'm doin'. If the record plays out before I'm done doing something else, I may start from the top again. Then of course, I'll often revisit certain tracks repeatedly. This weekend alone, the wife & I got on some kind of kick wherein we had to hear "This Woman's Work" after four or five times in a row.....oooOOoooh, Darrrrrlin......Make it Gooooo AwaaaaAAAAAAAaaayyyyyy!!!...until I was convinced our neighbor was going to pay us a visit with a meat cleaver.
