AA better than A? You tell me.

As the new Spice Girls single is decidedly lacklustre, I was pleased to see that it was a double A sided single. Though 'Holler' (lousy name) is the A side, there is that quaint invention the AA side. So I wondered, why would you make a track an AA side instead of the A side - unless the A side was better.

Sure there are some classic B-sides out there, but are there any AA sides which are better than the A side?

This question appears to belie a history in mathematics, doesn't it?

It's just a marketing exercise. The "A" side is presumably the one they're pushing (and the one they've shot a video for), but they're hoping also to pick up a lot of additional radio play (and sales) with the "AA" side. If it was classified "B" it would just be ignored.

The tendency is for bands to pull this trick when it's 3rd-single-off- album time, and shove a new track (i.e. a B Side) on the AA side. Or just, as in the last time the Spicies tried it, put two more-or-less duff album tracks on a single together to save the hassle of doing another B-Side of the caliber of "Spice Invaders".

As an aside, that single really is apalling.

Which bunch of indie arses was it who did a triple-A-side? I'll just bet it was Dodgy.

Yes, Tom, IIRC it was Dodgy who released a triple A-side, and what a horrendously, unspeakably "wacky" gesture it was, even for them ...

Ah, but I remember Salad doing the triple-a first!
