Need help-- which Kinks reissues should I buy?

Hello, ILM. I don't know if anybody on this board actually cares about the Kinks or this question but here goes...

I've been listening to my conglomeration of Kinks MP3s lately and I've been thinking that I'd really like to have their classic sixties stuff on CD. So, I thought, I'd simply go out and pick up all the Castle reissues that they put out in 1998, with all the groovy bonus tracks appended to each album, since I have a few of them already, namely Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, and Arthur. But now that I'm looking to buy the remaining albums, I've been reading complaints about the mastering on the albums. Apparently, the versions of the albums that are most appealing in terms of singles and unreleased stuff tacked on the end have the worst sound quality! Is there anyone here who has heard the Castle reissues in question and can offer an opinion on sound quality compared to other versions, which have much less bonus material?

And also, does anyone know if there's any truth to the rumor that a big box set of sixties Kinks stuff is coming out some time next year? Should I just wait on the whole purchasing thing until then?

Chris F., Tuesday, 25 November 2003 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Face to Face is fantastic and essential. Kinks Kronicles is one of the best comps ever, but it is sort of superseded by the bonus tracks on the Castle reissue. If SOMEONE (anyone, please) would reissue The Great Lost Kinks Album it would rank with all the other stuff you have up there.

I have no idea about a box set, but every album from Kinda Kinks to Lola vs. the Powerman and the Money-Go-Round (or Muswell Hillbillies, depending on who you ask and I'm not sure I quite got those album titles right) is well work owning.

So the Castle reissues sound OK? One of the grumbles that I heard about them was that they use mono mixes, but weren't the albums originally released in mono, with maybe a special stereo release for those who owned stereos at the time?

I've got The Great Lost Kinks Album on MP3, and I agree that it is superb. It might be my favorite Kinks album right now. Well, OK, Arthur is my favorite, but The Great Lost Kinks Album is a strong contender, and certainly easier to listen to repeatedly.

Incidentally, how do I post in italics on this board?

Guess not.

Or like this?

Alex is right-Face to Face is a must. Also, I've never had any problems with the reissues . . . . . . I know Muswell Hillbillies has been re-issued but have not seen it around at all. This is essential, as well. And, yes! they NEED to reissue the great lost kinks album. This has all been discussed but I need to stress this furthur. Isn't "The Way Love Used To Be" the most beautiful song ever written? Sorry, got on a rant . . . .

Also, any info on a possible box set would be great . . . .never heard this.

The Castle Reissues are excellent. There's no problem with the mono sound - in fact you're better off with it than the weedy stereo mixes of the first few (except 'Kontroversy' - I don't think that was ever released in Stereo). The extra tracks are absolutely fantastic in every case - eseential b-sides, EP trax, outttakes etc. Don't let anyone tell you that the first two (The Kinks and 'Kinda..') are krap - they are the pure distilled essence of North London Yoof Power circa '64 and as such are blistering. You can practically smell the sizzling dust on Dave Davies's valves as they rip it up on the likes of 'You Still Want Me', 'So Mystifying', and 'I Need You'. Get the ones you haven't got in this order : Kinda Kinks, Face To Face, The Kinks, Kinks Kontroversy, Lola vs Powerman. The Great Lost Kinks Album is also fantastic, - I'd love to hear that cleaned up a bit.

Also - get the BBC Sessions! The versions of See My Friends, You Really Got Me, All of The Day, and especially Love Me Till the Sun Shines knock spots off the originals.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I read somewhere that a double CD version of Village Green was released this year. Anyone have any info on this? The 1998 castle reissue, with 28 songs, is great, so I was wondering if there was anything new on the second disc (or if this was even released).

Jonathan (Jonathan), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Also - get the BBC Sessions! The versions of See My Friends, You Really Got Me, All of The Day, and especially Love Me Till the Sun Shines knock spots off the originals.

Thanks for the advice, Dr. C. I was actually looking at the BBC Sessions in the store today, and I noted that it also has "That Strange Effect", which I liked when I heard Holly Golightly do it, and "When I Turn Off the Living Room Light"-- is that the same version as the track on "The Great Lost Kinks Album"? I think it'll be a Christmas request.

The Castle reissues seem to be a little difficult to track down at this late date. Apparently, they've been supplanted by less generous versions? Anyway, I'll try my best to get all the early albums that I don't have.

As far as Village Green goes, I read in the liner notes to my reissue that it was originally planned as a double album, with 20 tracks! Does anyone know what the other 5 tracks would have been, if the album had originally been released that way? And are they included on this theoretical double CD reissue?

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Were "Lavender Hill", "Misty Water", and "Rosemary Rose" all Village Green outtakes?

Chris F. (servoret), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

No - Lavender Hill and Rosemary Rose are Something Else.. outtakes.

Misty Waters IS a VGPS outtake though. If you takethe mono and stereo versions together there are 17 songs (the stereo adds Mr. Songbird and Days and drops 5 others) If we add Misty Waters that makes 18. It's possible that LH or RR would have been recycled for the double VGPS and it's also possible that She's Got Everything (B-side of Days) would have been on there.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I forgot about "Mr. Songbird" and "Days", and I just realised yesterday for the first time that they were on my copy of VGPS too! (I don't think I've listened to the stereo mix more than twice since I got the CD.) Hmm... they don't seem like they fit the album very well, so I don't feel too bad that they were left off.

I'm disappointed that "She's Got Everything" wasn't tacked on to the end of the CD-- I could have done without the mono mix of "Days" to compensate, if length was an issue. Oh well, I guess I can always pick up The Kink Kronikles, especially since it seems like there are a few other songs on that album that never made it on to the end of a Castle reissue.

The 2CD Singles Collection on Sanctuary is a good starter pack - only £6 new from that stall round the back of Goodge Street tube!

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I listened to my Something Else on Castle last night, and while I do very much like the packaging and extra tracks, the sound isn't great. However, I've never heard the original LP, so maybe this is as good as it gets.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

as many as you can afford.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

the sound on the castle reissues is quite fine as kinks sound goes. the original albums didn't exactly have hi-fi sound quality, and the original reprise/warner bros cd reissues were utterly embarrassing -- they sounded like third generation cassettes that had gone through a couple of washing-machine cycles in the back pocket of your jeans. the castle reissues restore the original sound and are as absolutely essential as anyone above has said. of the ones you don't have, "face to face" is the next most essential, and, yeah, a cd issue of the "great lost kinks album" would be a damn good idea.

"muswell hillbillies," which is a damn good album but maybe a bit overrated, was the first album the kinks made after they left reprise, and as such it wasn't reissued by castle; it was reissued a little bit later by velvel. or at least that's what's available in the u.s. i have no idea if the velvel issue is still in print, but it's damn easy to find here in new york.

the castle reissues seem to come in two different sizes; you can find 20-or-so-track versions of all the '60s classics but you can also find 15-or-so-track versions of the same albums, with two or three bonus tracks instead of seven or eight. i have no idea why that is, but make sure you're buying the ones with the most tracks. because, damn, their outtakes and singles and b-sides were mighty fine.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, i used the word damn a lot in the above post. dammit.

The Castle reissues are nice enough if you have nothing against mono versions. If not, search some other reissue of "Something Else"

Stereo versions of the non-stereo tracks that were only on the English version, maybe?

I have a Japanese version of the UK album, and there all tracks are in stereo.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So is the 3cd VGPS worth picking up for a "casual" Kinks fan?

it's ALL too loud, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

It is if you can get it for £6.99, which is what they were selling it for in HMV a couple of weeks ago. Otherwise, no. I haven't listened to it all. But I will.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 08:16 (twenty years ago)

It's essential!

Dr.C, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to buy it eventually but I would certainly have bought it for £6.99!!! Nobody seems to buy Kinks' reissue so they always end up cheap (usu. in FOPP).

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

I love Village Green and I recommend that 3CD version highly, especially cheap (and yes it is 3 discs, not two). My favorite album of all time.

Other than that, I say definitely Face To Face is your next essential. Beyond that, move forward and backward through the catalog until you hit a point where you don't like the stuff anymore. For me, that's just after Muswell Hilbillies!

And incidentally, I think the reason you don't see that around anymore is that the company that reissued them (Velvel) is now out of business, but I thought someone else picked them up? Anyone know?

Hutlock (Hutlock), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

is "the great lost kinks album" basically made up of all the songs now available on the reissues?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

There's a new 10 disc box set of all the original Pye Albums. I don't know if it has all the bonus stuff that the reissues have though. I'm debating buying it, cuz a) it looks cool, b) it is cool, c) then I can give all the reissues I've just bought for about half the price of the box set each away to someone who needs them.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Most of the stuff on GLKA is available on the reissues, but there are still a few tracks missing I think. Some of them are on the BBC album as well. But yeah, a reissue of that needs to happen anyway.

Hutlock (Hutlock), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

No bonus tracks on the Pye Collection:

Huk-L, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Hutlock and I have discussed before -- as much as I love VGPS, the 3-CD set has never really called me. Partly b/c I could give a shit about mono/stereo mixes, partly b/c I have a lot of the bonus material elsewhere, and partly b/c BBC sessions are rarely essential to me (certainly not for that price, anyway).

And also because I have Kinks Kronicles; albeit not remastered, it's a fantastic summary of that era, including great liners by Jon Mendelssohn, and one of the best songs from the 3-CD set, "Berkley Mews".

BTW, is it wrong to like Arthur more?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

The 3cd set is £9.99 on 101cd, and I have a voucher so I would be getting it free of charge. So...I should pick it up then? Is it a better option than the 3cd Billy Bragg collection? (Thanks for everyone's feedback, by the way.)

it's ALL too loud, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it is better than Billy Bragg. I like Billy Bragg, but the Kinks set is much better.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

"Face To Face", "Something Else", "Village Green Preservation Society", "Arthur" and a good singles compilation. If that compilation does also include "Lola", "Apeman" and "Coming Dancing", then you need no more of their post 1970 material.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Thanks everyone!
