I think Oxide + Neutrino have a lot of electro in their sound. Listen to those kick drums.

dave q, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh boy, where to begin?

Cybotron: Allys of my mind

Kraftwerk: Computer Welt

everything by Drexciya

everything by Dopplereffekt

Man Parrish: Man-Made (probably my favourite electro track of all time)

Autechre: Amber

Jedi Knights: Noddy Holder

Jonzun Crew: Space is the Place

Mantronix: Needle on the Groove

Omar, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar, i was going to do a Drexiya thread, as i have never heard them. where is best to start.

ray-gun-omics. that was a good track. from about 84, can't remember who its by though

gareth, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can anyone recommend me a good 80's electro compilation? I'd love to check out some of that stuff but dont know where to start.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth: 'The Quest', double-cd best of thingy with some unreleased tracks. Essential.

Omar, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael - the 'Classic Electro Mastercuts' comp isn't too bad - includes good cuts by Peech Boys, Whodini, Man Parrish etc.

Andrew L, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

seconded that is an excellent compilation - I bought it in 1994! and still listen to it.

I will come back to this thread later!

DJ Martian, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if it came out in the UK, but Tommy Boy put out a four disc set in 1998 called The Perfect Beats: New York Electro Hip Hop + Underground Dance Classics. A lot of it isn't strictly electro, but it's all pretty fantastic -- G. Kranz, Shannon, Bambaataa, Planet Patrol, C. Khan, ESG, Jonzun Crew, Newcleus, Candido, TW Funkmasters, etc.

Andy, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shannon - Let the music play (esp on 12"), now that's what I call music ;-)

Billy Dods, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is some of my favourite music ever: Shannon, Pacman, Hasheem, Newcleus, Jonzun Crew, Egyptian Lover... Back in the day you had the Streetsounds compilation albums. Nowadays your best bet is Rhino's Street Jams: Electric Funk series.

JoB, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

electro is the technopop of the present.

* "1234" by Golden Boy and Miss Kittin

* "Frank Sinatra" feat. Miss Kittin
* everything by Khan as Super 8
* I.F. especially "Secret Desire"
* "Kaltes Klares Wasser" by Chicks on Speed
* Peeeeeeeaches
* "Funiculaire" and the Bold album by Readymade

more!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cheers for this gareth. it was a bit pathetic of me not to do it myself. i guess i'll make these records my attempted new purchases. i mean, can i just go to hmv or something and fuind this shit, or does it require weeks of reckless/hard.to.find/ebaying?

ambrose, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is well worth checking out TOP 50 Electro tracks of all time

DJ Martian, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Street Jams: Electric Funk (Rhino)

I found a series of compilations recently that puts Priority's Electro Funk series to shame. It's Rhino's Street Jams: Electric Funk. I even found a reasonably-priced boxed set of parts 1-4 at my local MediaPlay. These CDs clock in at an average of over 70 minutes each. The cuts are classic '80s electro, early underground dance music at its finest. For those of you who don't know, electro was a short-lived Kraftwerk-inspired genre that formed the basis for modern techno, hip hop, Miami bass, and countless other sub-genres.

Back to the compilation though--this series has many of the greats, including Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force, Cybotron (Juan Atkins), The Egyptian Lover, Channel One (Atkins again), Free Style, and Grandmaster & Melle Mel. Plus there's cuts like "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock, "When I Hear Music" by Debbie Deb, and "Let the Music Play" by Shannon. The tracks are full length and mastered at the correct speeds. There's no cheesy studio mixing to cut off intros and outros. The liner notes are extensive, including photos of several artists. Two recently-produced megamixes are also included; they're a little melodramatic, but they help hype up the material in the spirit of the era. Overall, if you want to know where modern electronic music is coming from, this is the series to check out. --Jacob Arnold

Amazon.com have some audio snippets of Afrika Bambaataa - Looking for the Perfect Beat: 1980-1985 this should be available at most record shops in the UK, it was released earlier this year.

Bolz Bolz

Something brand spanking new to recommend: Bolz Bolz - take a walk this track has been played a lot by Joh Kennedy on Xfm in London. It is massive stomper of an electro track. Due out next week!

Chink y Records

BOLZ BOLZ. Take A Walk - Paul Daley Remixes. (Longhaul) Ltd 12" £4.49 "Take a walk fuses a retro sound with the warmth and depth of Detroitian moods and grooves resulting in a powerful string driven track. After hearing the track Leftfield's Paul Daley asked to do a remix and here it is, the maestro chose the electrofied approach mixing the original strings with his downright infectious beats.

by the way an album was also released earlier this by Bolz Bolz:

Bolz Bolz - Human Race (Feis) German Import

action records has something called 'mantronix 1985-1999" is that good?

ambrose, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

heard mixed things about that. i think the problem is that mantronix kind of shifted styles a lot during this period (normally a good thing but...), and there was a lot of treading water and kind of bland early 90s nothingness (i may be wrong here). i think mantronix heyday was quite a thing period of time (85-87). Bassline, with MC Tee is worth picking up though.

gareth, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just heard that The Other People Place record. Only enough for a brief synopsis: It is very good.

My brother reckons it's very Detroit-y, but I don't know enough about Detroit to compare (of course, this is where I go into my 'duh, I'm an indie kid, isn't that where the White Stripes are from?' stupor)

emil.y, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Other Peoples Place is half of Drexciya.

Also, look for Aux 88 and UR for some Detroit style electrofunk.

heard 'Automan' for the first time the other day on one of speculator's old mixes: so good (and pretty funny, but great beyond that). buying 'Destination: Earth' now, also the 'Hip Hop Be Bop' album.

Had a look at this list, and I realize I have hardly heard any of those albums in the top 100 there. Those few I have heard I all love though, so probably should check out more of it: http://rateyourmusic.com/customchart?page=1&chart_type=top&type=album&year=alltime&genre_include=1&genres=electro&include_child_genres=t&include=both&origin_countries=&limit=none&countries=

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 30 November 2009 12:49 (sixteen years ago)

only like 6 of those are 'electro'

jaxon, Monday, 30 November 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

the use of at least some electronic instrumentation = 'electro'. A reasonable list tho.
