I need a shit big list of movies about music - old or new, good or bad, any type of music, and from anywhere in the world.

I have many of the obvious ones, i.e. Almost Famous, Spinal Tap, High Fidelity, Velvet Goldmine, Sid & Nancy, 24 Hour Party People, What's Love Got To Do With It?, The Doors, A Hard Day's Night, Quadrophenia, Tommy, Backbeat, The Rutles, Jailhouse Rock / Elvis Movies, Head, The Wall, Saturday Night Fever yada yada.

But now my mind is gone blank and I need some more. Ta.

Slade were in a great one: Flame

Also: Hearts of Fire (which is an absolute bag o'shyte), Purple Rain, Jailhouse Rock, Summer Holiday...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Human Traffic
Clubbed to Death
Year of the Devil (It's a mockumentary, but with real people. An excellent film; a lot of such films have more to do about the "scene" than the actual music, but this one's all about the transcendental qualities of music.)
Wave Twisters
I'd include Fantasia as well, since in it's way it's all about music.

If you're willing to accept documentaries as well, there are obviously a lot more.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Immortal Beloved" - that's a good 'un. More classical stuff like this please, such as Amadeus.

And more clubbing movies is a good one, or movies about the experience of various music cultures.

Documentaries as well: I've already got Buena Vista Social Club, The Filth and the Fury, Decline of Western Civilisation II, Biggie and Tupac etc.

And concert movies like Woodstock, The Song Remains the Same, Ziggy Stardust, Stop Making Sense etc.

Hard Core Logo - Mocumentary a la Spinal Tap

Bad News - a Adrain Edmondson, Rik Mayall & Nigel Planer "mocumentary" about a really crappy 80's heavy metal band.

I would also have to recommend:

All About Lily Chou Chou. It's about a fans' obsession/dedication with a singer named Lily Chou Chou.

Re: Space is the Place...this is Sun Ra, right? I think I may have watched this like 10 times in the past two weeks. I've watched some Sun Ra film a shitload lately, anyway, and it's really amazing. I love where he's talking about "history, that's his story, but this is my story, and my story is mystery". I love that man.

Driver 23 / Atlas Moth - it's a must-see for most on this list.
It's a doc of manic-depressive Dan Cleveland's metal band Dark Horse,
with many, many quotable lines.

http://www.thestranger.com/2001-03-22/music.html has a review.

There's some wacky rock n roll western called like Zebediah or Jeremiah or some Amish-sounding name ft. The James Gang and STARRING Elvin Jones as a total fucking bad-ass who shoots a guy and then sits down to play a 10 minute sweaty-as-fuck drum solo. TOTALLY find that!

Two Visconti movies (Luscino, not Tony):
Death in Venice turns Tomas Mann's story into virtually one long fantasy on the life and music of Mahler.
Ludwig, about the mad, decadent, proto-glam Wagner-fanboy King of Bavaria.

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Only 1/3 of the Bruce MacDonald trilogy was only mentioned.
Roadkill - A intern music employee goes from Toronto to Northern Ontario in an attempt to reign in a band on a tour from hell. Features an amazing soundtrack, Nash The Slash without bandages and a twisted Don McKellar. Was supposed to be about the band A Neon Rome but that band imploded when amoung other things ,the lead singer took a vow of silence.
Highway 69 - Jello Biafra plays a customs agent, Art Bergmann an aging rockstar and Don McKellar plays a roadie as they go from Ontario through Detroit back to roots of rock music.
Hard Core Logo - Didn't really see it ending the way it did but what the hell.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (featuring The Bee Gees)
Detroit Rock City
KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park
