New album album of covers, Meet Glen Campbell. Hmmmn. Tracklisting:
1. 'Jesus' (Velvet Underground) 2. 'All I Want Is You' (U2) 3. 'Times Like These' (Foo Fighters) 4. 'Grow Old With Me' (John Lennon) 5. 'Angel Dream' (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 6. 'Sadly Beautiful' (The Replacements) 7. 'Sing' (Travis) 8. 'These Days' (Jackson Browne) 9. 'Walls (Circus)' (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) 10. 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)' (Green Day)
― etc, Thursday, 1 May 2008 03:21 (seventeen years ago)
I like the idea of him doing 'Walls'. The tracklist doesn't make me cringe...but what's his voice like these days?
― VegemiteGrrrl, Thursday, 1 May 2008 04:44 (seventeen years ago)
VU+Lennon+Replacements songs = thumbs up "Times Like These"+"Sing"+Green Day song = who the hell suggested these?
― Z S, Thursday, 1 May 2008 04:48 (seventeen years ago)
I'm v.curious about the Green Day cover - attempts to picture it in my head end up with more of a Johnny Cash vibe - is this his answer to all those latterday Cash records, or has he/other country veterans already done that?
― etc, Thursday, 1 May 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)
Really looking forward to hearing "These Days".
― Spencer Chow, Thursday, 1 May 2008 06:45 (seventeen years ago)
Oh my God. This is going to be incredible! I am so down with this. Sadly Beautiful is the one I want to hear first.
I always knew he should get the Johnny Cash treatment. When does this come out?
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 1 May 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)
this sounds like it could be really good but I hate that fuckin Green Day song so so bad
― J0hn D., Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)
this sounds pretty awful, but then again i'm totally sick of these kinds of albums.

― If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 1 May 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)
3 songs are streaming at the glencampbellshow.com
Without doubt, the single most anticipated record of the summer, perhaps the decade. It's got the potential to bring the music industry to its knees, people! Kneel before Glen campbell.
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 05:46 (seventeen years ago)
Glen is back, baby. Yes.
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)
Listening to it now! He´s giving it the Johnny Cash treatment, with all these covers. Except it doesn´t sound sparse like Cash, it´s rocky and jingle-jangly. Had much rather seen him do new songs of his own, but hey, it's really nice to hear his voice again.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)
Thankfully, based on the streaming tracks this is nothing at all like the "Johnny Cash treatment." There's nothing ironic about it, he's not imposing himself on these songs, they're more just like straight-up covers which is kinda nice.
Except these three songs are lame to begin with.
― Hadrian VIII, Friday, 1 August 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)
There are some more interesting songs on the new record that aren't streaming. Sadly Beautiful by the Replacements and Velvet Underground Jesus are two.
― kornrulez6969, Friday, 1 August 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)
His version of Jackson Browne's (& Nico's) "These Days" is easily the best thing I've heard all year. "Jesus" is perhaps the 2nd best thing I've heard all year. The rest of the LP is less giant-killing, but still pretty impressive. His voice is still a thing of great power & beauty.
― harveyw, Friday, 1 August 2008 15:12 (seventeen years ago)
he actually does U2 pretty well, too. a return to the Al DeLoryisms of yore, right down to cinematic sweep of strings and some terse Glen guitar solos where all he does is play the melody. Not so hot on the Westerberg tune and of course that fucking Green Day song is the "Send in the Clowns" of, yeecchh. Pretty good record.
― whisperineddhurt, Friday, 1 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

Ghost On The Canvas sees Campbell capping his brilliant career with one of his most moving and energized works to date, a powerfully emotional song cycle that sees him accompanied by a truly dazzling line-up of songwriters and musicians. Among the tunesmiths contributing original songs to the collection are such modern luminaries as Paul Westerberg, Jakob Dylan, Robert Pollard, and Teddy Thompson, backed by a roster of players that includes Chris Isaak, Dick Dale, Billy Corgan, Brian Setzer, Rick Nielsen, Roger Manning, and The Dandy Warhols. The album is produced by Julian Raymond, who also co-wrote a number of new songs with Campbell.

Been relistening to the (quite excellent) UK comp The Capitol Years: 65-77 here. Stellar work indeed, and a lot of his quieter guitar performances are standing out in particular.
That is indeed a super comp.

re his bio, someone was just telling me how he was apparently older than a lot of the other wrecking crew guys. He had been part of his family band for so many years and was just playing in other pick up bands in Phoenix before somebody invited him out LA, or convinced him to go west.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 August 2017 14:36 (eight years ago)
Wait, switch that around. He was one of the younger members of The Wrecking Crew, but even then he had still spent all these years as a child guitar prodigy just playing in bands in Arizona and wherever before going session. Maybe it's in the Blaine book, but I guess Tommy would get all the technical stuff, because he was a legendary reader, but Glen would get the more rock and roll guitar stuff.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 August 2017 14:40 (eight years ago)
He didn't make it till he was over 30.

Same with Jimmy Page. I forget the name of the other, older guitarist, but between the two of them they handled tons of London sessions. The older guy would often get the jazzier technical stuff, Jimmy Page would get the rockier stuff, and whichever one wasn't handling electric would play acoustic. Though sometimes they would swap electric/acoustic duties, just for kicks.
