Cuz I am. Well?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently it's sold out, in case anyone w/o tickets was planning to walk up and go in. Might be worth calling the club to see about a reserve-pay list, but be forewarned...

Can. Not. Wait.

Andy, Tuesday, 25 November 2003 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Erp. Guess I'm not going now. Guess we're headin' to da movies instead...

Have. Fun!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

sigh, no i am not.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't because I'M DYING.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

dude how packed is the downstairs going to be?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing 'em in SF on Friday. I can't WAIT.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i wasnt that interested until i, uh, borrowed matos' kompakt compilation, which i really like... so i guess i'm going to see them in chicago. also i heard that m.mayer is really cute and gay.

i think my friend has an extra ticket for APT if anyone needs one, email me i guess.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"tickets"??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

they were indeed selling tickets, Tracer

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmm well any changes that place makes can't help but be for the better.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

So... who went and how was it?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah give me the scoop!! how was it?!

geeta at mark's place (mark s), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I couldn't go because I was busy DYING. I can't stress this enough.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not dying. You just can't think of anything good to do.

ferris b (bnw), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh just hurry up and DIE already then you big drama queen

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

instead of going to this i drank a six pack and watched enough mtv until i was numb and distended

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

then i went to bed

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

haha jess yr calling _daddino_ a drama queen?!?!?!

geeta at mark's place (mark s), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mayer was really awesome. The Voigt stuff was pretty hard and bangin the whole time, which is to be expected but I didn't like it as much. I went mainly to see/ hear Jane who played first. Jane is Panda Bear from the Animal Collective singing over DJ Casio's mix. It ruled.
The place was of course packed and the drinks were of course expensive. Well, there was free vodka for an hour. It was a fun night!

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry geeta, yr right, he doesn't use as many superfluous "haha" and "?!?!?!" as you, so here's your crown.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh!

geeta at mark's place (mark s), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha omg wtf i kno rite

u&k: did mayer play "UNTER NULL"??

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

oh just hurry up and DIE already then you big drama queen

If I'm going to DIE then I want you to kill me. But don't eat me, etc.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping that last line would have more finesse, more charm and wit, but it doesn't. I'm new to this 'humor' thing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

daddino the palpitations = you were excited about the show! (er maybe?)

we want show reports now!!

geeta at mark's place (mark s), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

mike, at least let me keep a pound of flesh for chrissakes.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

was i the only one to see jay-z and friends at the garden (at one point looking over to see pharrell and ghostface killah flanking me as we watched mary j. blige) and the APT show (where some fuck stole my coat and bag)? it was a great day, nonetheless.

Beta (abeta), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

They're playing in Detroit tomorrow. I'm really tempted to go check them out, but I haven't been to a club gig in a long time.

"Jane is Panda Bear from the Animal Collective singing over DJ Casio's mix"

-Man, that sounds fantastic. What type of stuff did DJ Casio play?

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff - they're playing Detroit on Thanksgiving? Wow, that show must have been added late. I'm flying there in about two hours and was bummed to have to miss tonight's Chicago show. Where is the Detroit show?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It's downtown at Panacea, and yes, it was a late add. I just found out about it Friday when I was at a record store. Details here:
http://www.paxahau.com/

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be at the show in chicago tonight...looking forward to some bootytastic beats. my hopes are high because ellen allien rocked it when she played here and the crowd was rowdy and into it. tonight should be similar even though i am always dubious about the empty bottle. it's always some combination of uptight beard-stroking and a crowd around the bar talking way too loudly over the music.

disco graphy (disco stu), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Andy Battaglia's description of this show over the phone made me want to sell everything and move to Cologne.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i heard mayer play in london not too long ago and it was ace. he takes some really interesting risks (not sure that's the most accurate word) in his sets...the quality ratio of good tunes coming out of the cologne scene is sky high right about now...i hope he brought a record bags full of dubs.

discocaine (disco stu), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

AB sez approx. 80% of the set was stuff he'd never heard.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I will have a recording of this set v. soon, methinks (heh heh)

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

80% huh? well i am a complete trainspotter so we shall see. *grin*

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

oh Jaaay Veeee, let us talk of a traaaade....

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos. U are on. Should know next week if I'll get it or not.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

[[rubs hands greedily together]]

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Mayer did play Kylie, I wasn't downstairs at the point, but I bet it was sweaty.

"-Man, that sounds fantastic. What type of stuff did DJ Casio play?"

Hmm, it wasn't stuff I knew, but mostly minimal house, and a couple of 80s sounding tracks that were almost acid, but really good, and the set segued into Mayer nicely.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm...is LA sold out, I wonder.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i just bought two tickets so no, it's not.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

GO NED GO

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll need a place to crash that evening! Vahid, what were the ticket prices? Through Ticketmaster or elsewhere?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

at the echo website they have a link at the top for something called ticketweb. you can buy will call tickets there. two tickets cost me $29.98 (as opposed to $30 at the door). it's $24- before 10 pm but hey, i'm not driving 100 miles without a ticket.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(an aside: a chin-stroking crowd at a rock club in Chicago? you don't say!)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

instead of going, i wasted an obscene amount of cash on a locksmith to get me into my apartment after my keys vanished. growl.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, i can't offer you a place to stay but i can offer a lift.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you coming up from San Diego? If so and you're planning on heading back that direction after the show, then I'm in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

24 hours on and i'm even more depressed about missing this

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 November 2003 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll just keep telling myself it was packed, sweaty, bad sound, full of johnny-come-lately hipsters...hey, just like every other "event" in nyc...there, i feel better.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 November 2003 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hector, will you be at the Saturday show? It will be a great place to meet up!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 November 2003 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, what a great time at the empty bottle tonite. beers were only $1.75! why oh why did i ever leave chicago?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 November 2003 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"i'll just keep telling myself it was packed, sweaty, bad sound, full of johnny-come-lately hipsters...hey, just like every other "event" in nyc..."

jeeeez jess, do hipsters really affect your ability to have a funnn time?

Beta (abeta), Thursday, 27 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you haven't been to many shows in nyc have you?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. i hate live music to begin with so a room full of shriners or recovering alcoholics or magicians would piss me off just as much.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 November 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

p.p.s. hating live music as a rule doesn't occasionally mean someone puts on a show good enough to break that rule.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 27 November 2003 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the show in chicago was great. "unter null" was played, fiddo. mayer's set included everything from closer music to bangin' chicago house - it started off with some profan cuts to kompakt/trapez tunes to 2 records i would kill for and have no idea who they were done by and then got progressively poppier and then harder. the tune that really got the crowd moving was by the wighomy bros which was a fantastic thing to experience. the lineup was kate simko, mayer, voight, mayer. mayer's second set was more full-on techno which was only okay imo, but had the crowd heaving. voight's set was full-on expertly crafted acid techno as would be expected. simko's set was very nice...

disco & chips (disco stu), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I look forward to tomorrow night. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

whoop! whoop!

also heiko voss - "i think about you" = TUNE

disco stu (disco stu), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i kinda wish that 'i think about you' was sung in german, though.

but i'm like that.

geeta, Saturday, 29 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

jess i think i just have a high hipster tolerance living in Williamsburg. it's the nine dollar drinks that kill me. either way, this show was the exception.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the drinks thing is the killer. there's no reasonable world where a yuengling should cost $5. (and i drink the stuff like water.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

=hip flask.

Beta (abeta), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm counting down the minutes until Matos wakes up, finds a web cafe or something and proceeds to describe the night in loving detail.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

it was fucking GREAT!!!

Got off the plane, went straight to venue, arriving at 10pm. Not five minutes later, a tall guy w/glasses approached me: "Are you Matos?" It was Alex in SF. He and his girlfriend, the Inexhaustible Jen (who danced more than either of us, and we danced damn near the entire time), are great people. It would've been good anyway but meeting them there that early (esp. since I don't really know anyone in SF) was a godsend.

Apparently nightspots close up at 2-ish but this went till quarter to 4. I was expecting Mayer to slow-burn forever but he didn't; he maybe gave us 15 minutes of ambience before slowly bringing in the beats, and it took him maybe 25 minutes more to rev up to full speed. God knows the crowd was totally up for it--can't remember the last time I was in a room full of people who wanted to dance AND DID. Reports I heard from NYC was that it was to some degree trainspotter hell; none of that here. I broke my own vow not to trainspot once, when he put on some ridiculous pile-up of a record that built into circuslike chaos and then exploded, subsided, and built up again.* He played a track from his new EP that killed, the first major peak of the night. He played with mood, of course, but not to the degree I expected--mostly this was a good-time crowd and he responded in kind.

Reinhard Voigt did a PA after Mayer's two-hour set, and he was ace as well--I thought, well, OK, hard techno after a smorgasbord of stuff, maybe I'll sit while he does this. Not a chance. Nothing groundbreaking about what he was doing, but he tweaked his presets and got his effects with so much apparent, obvious love for what he was doing--and did it so well--that Alex, Jen and I were all just going for it. Mayer followed with another hour plus of mostly shuffley stuff to wind it down. No Kylie, but none needed. I haven't had that much fun in a while. Ned, you're going to be a happy man.

*And of course I can't remember what the record was called! I'm around the corner from Amoeba, though, and surely they'll have it or something like it. And yes, Ned, I'm at Cafe Cole on Haight. Which reminds me: It's 2:30pm right now. I'll be at the cafe a bit longer and then I'll be at Amoeba from, oh, let's say 3pm to 5pm. If anyone is in SF and would like to hook up/hang out/say hello, I'm wearing a houndstooth check button-down shirt and have short hair sticking up all over and nerd-chic glasses. I also have long sideburns and two, possibly three chins. Come say hi!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

also I'm glad I saw it here in SF rather than NYC, people could and did dance, drinks were cheaper (though after a very early Aboslut/OJ I stuck to Red Bull) and no distracting note-comparing w/fellow crits (yeah I do it too, take all the blame etc.), instead just dancing!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you're going to be a happy man.

I am pleased. :-) Just waiting for Vahid to swing by later this evening...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 29 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ned is about to be abducted by crazed techno purists from the 858. they are going to show angelenos how the sexy people dance.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 29 November 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Astounding!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 November 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I broke my own vow not to trainspot once

i didn't trainspot at all! and yes, it's because i was too busy dancing. i caught mayer grinning at me because i was literally out there the whole time shaking my ass. big up the dancing massive...

disco thinks about you all the time (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

:-(

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's any consolation, i bet they'll be back, jess.

disco loop (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i am sure. mayer must surely be at the height of his powers right now. i feel like i missed grooverider circa 94 or something.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

surely one of the events of the year imho. there are a lot of folks here in chicago (as well as across the country i'm sure) that have really supported/followed kompakt since the beginning so in that regard it was a very big deal. just think though...living in cologne would afford us all the opportunity to hear mayer et al every friday night.

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"at the height of his powers" always has such an ominous ring to it.

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i take it back!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

has any dj really maintained that certain level of quality for more than, like, five or six years?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it's an odd thing when someone who "simply" spins records can be said to have gotten "worse".

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still not quite sure what the guidelines are.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well surely quality is a really relative term, but yeah, i can think of dj's who have maintained a really high standard for long periods of time. what about guys like francois k?

it's an odd thing when someone who "simply" spins records can be said to have gotten "worse".

that's the thing with dj-ing though! it's not simple to do something really special with two records and a mixer. it's a really great metaphor for the age of pharmaceutical mood and informational manipulation we live in today.

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"...we live in today" is so hackneyed, but still.

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the guidelines are if you feel it

disco stu (disco stu), Sunday, 30 November 2003 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Only a few hours to go and I cant wait for tonight. With all this build up though its going to be scary. If anyone wants to meet up I will be wearing jeans black vans and glasses with shortish brown hair.

See you on the flipside

hector (hector), Sunday, 30 November 2003 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope to see you there! I will be wearing my Noise Noise Noise T-shirt which very conveniently intentionally borrows the design from the cover of Unknown Pleasures so identification should be easyish.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 November 2003 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

*The track Matos was trainspotting was by My Robot Friend. No idea what the track name is though, but looking at Discogs.com, it looks like it was from the "Why Won't You Call Me Back?" EP (I just saw the COVER, I wasn't trainspotting I swear!!)

**Matos please please please post that Signal to Noise thing with /rupture on yr blog. I'm aching to read it.

***Me and Jen both had a blast. Absolutely fucking fantastic. And Matos is a great guy so if he ever comes to your town you should all hang out with him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i missed this! my only ride wasn't interested at all (dancing? german guys? what?). instead i sighed while we drove to a late night diner listening to 'total' compilations.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 30 November 2003 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Mayer was ON tonight in L.A.!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 30 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole night was awesome!
They had the crowd begging for more when the club kicked us out.

There was this one track that had this kind of disjointed melody for a breakdown that was just unbelievable.

If someone recorded any of the tour let me know

hector (hector), Sunday, 30 November 2003 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hector! Sorry I couldn't say goodbye! I looked for you...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 30 November 2003 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Mayer was ON tonight in L.A.!

Yeah, seconded. I'm glad I spent most of my dancing time for his set than Voigt's, which while functional was comparatively one note -- Mayer was Der Genius. Hurrah for Vahid for the ride, meeting Hector and Dan Regan and seeing Spencer. Yay goodness! Now I sleep.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 November 2003 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ned's not kidding! voigt's entire one hour set was a long remix of "supertiel" with an added acid workout which segued into a loooong set of variations on "how we rock" - oh my god it was something else. he kept doing hulkamania poses, and he would count down the number of bars until during the bass drops with his hands for us. he absolutely destroyed me; reduced to a quaking mess, feet planted, waving the sign of the beast. i don't know what i'd have done if they hadn't kicked us out after his set!

he and mayer were pasty-assed and resplendent in matching wifebeaters. mayer is quite a dancer and crowd-pleaser. he started his set with closer musik's "maria" and then through some emo-house and then bouncing along for a long time in jazzier territory in the vein of sami koivikko or luciano. at the top of his set he ambushed us with lfo's "freak", i think that may be what hector was talking about? i also heard lots of the softer speicher tracks, some vocal pop i didn't recognize and not a lot of hardcore schaffel.

now why did i miss t. raumschmiere two weeks ago? i heard he destroyed his equipment at the end of his set, maximum rock and roll style! :(

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

*The track Matos was trainspotting was by My Robot Friend. No idea what the track name is though, but looking at Discogs.com, it looks like it was from the "Why Won't You Call Me Back?" EP

sounds like it was the matmos remix.

stirmonster, Sunday, 30 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i think after hearing these guys rock the KOMEX tracks in a club setting Speicher is my favorite kompakt disc again. driving home we listened to kevin saunderson and i kept hearing echoes of reinhardt voigt tracks in the swing on the drum programming. i would have just died if they'd playd "regensburg" but as it is they did play "fieber" so it's all good.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it was great to see everyone from ILM really 'avin it on the dancefloor.
vahid that very well could have been freak from lfo that I liked so much, which is kinda cool cause i dismissed that album out of hand when it came out.

Fabric 13 although great doesn't do Meyer justice, his handling of time is nice, doesn't rush into anything and is comfortable getting the crowd where he wants to when he wants to.

hector (hector), Monday, 1 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

God my legs are still aching. If only I didn't have to go to work tomorrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 December 2003 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

feel the burn :-)

uts ocsid (disco stu), Monday, 1 December 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I had fun, mayer was on point, like everybody said, LFO's 'Freak' sounded great in his set, I was a little dissapointed that the Schaffel didn't make that much of an appearance but that's a minor minor nitpick in the face of the greatness of the night.

The crowd was super cool, probably 50%+ of the crowd was music journalists/record store employees/dj's, like one of those early punk shows where everybody in attendance went on to form their own band....I wonder if we'll hear this show's influence in future LA techno events? I hope so.

tylero, Monday, 1 December 2003 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

feel the burn :-)

Oh, I am, I am.

So Tylero, you're LA area too? Ya shoulda introduced yerself!

probably 50%+ of the crowd was music journalists/record store employees/dj's

And band members -- my friend Stacie Lyons from Hello Fever was getting down.
