JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE TOPS NME COOL LIST 2003

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE is officially is the coolest person on the planet according to the NME COOL LIST, beating the likes of BEYONCE, THE STROKES, YEAH YEAH YEAHS and DIZZEE RASCAL to the top spot.

Now in its second year, The NME Cool List features incredible 38 new entries and a fantastic array of female icons. Also on the list are The Distillers' Brody Dalle and White Stripes' Meg White. Kylie, and Christina Aguilera also all make it into the definitive list of cool.

Conor McNicholas, editor of the NME, said: "The NME Cool List is a reflection of how exciting the music scene is right now. Whether it is wearing the right clothes, being magnetically charismatic or deliberately trashing their talent for the sake of it, all of the entries in this years list have one thing in common - the X factor."

Meanwhile the ‘Fool List’ names and shames those that have been anything but cool over the past 12 months.

To get the definitive list pick up the year's coolest NME in London today (November 25) and tomorrow nationwide (26).

Ryan A, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 05:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Sooooo how long ya been working for NME, Ryan?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha "the likes of"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"beating"

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Timberlake?!?!?! Beyonce?!?!?! Aguilera!??!?! Kylie!??!?!?!

Is the NME turning into Smash Hits or something!??!?!?!?!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"turning into"

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but where have all the "good souls" gone?

(Not particularly a starsailor ref)

Run up the flag : We are defeated.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Not quite. The presenter on Liquid News last night, Libby someone, reported this 'item' and added, with a sexy glint in her eye, "of course in reality this actually makes Justin the least cool."

We laughed.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I got unnecessarily angry abt this in the pub last night. Sorry to all who had to suffer my shouting.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Having heard Justin's lame new McDonalds-tastic single, I'm pretty sure NME are gonna be wiping the egg off their faces pretty soon, if anyone still cares.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Missy Elliott was not in it = they are morons

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

'X-factor'?

Is C-Mac going to be judging pop idol next?

where was andre 3000?

enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

'I'm Lovin It' is much better than i thought it would be though

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"all of the entries in this years list have one thing in common - the X factor."

this is silly

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

not in the case of Richard X - but was he in it? oh who the fuck cares

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"i identify the characteristic that unites all these people. For those who can't spot it, it's...the x-factor!!! clear now?"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:02 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, i'm feeling inarticulate today. what i mean is, emmm...

Conor McNicholas: "You may think this is a list of random cool people, but it isn't! They all have..."

Reader: "What?!! Confidence? Intelligence? TELL ME!"

Conor McNicholas: "The x-factor! Clear now?"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the best way to make something go away? is it to ignore it or is it to attack it with unbridled venom?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

attack it with unbridled venom?

That works for moo cows.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how McNicholas does - but as time goes by the NME - just keeps getting worse !

The design, content, lack of ideas, repetition, the heat style news, reducing the albums to the back and the only 3 pages at most, the stupid pictures, the gormless new bands it hypes .....it's just more of everything that i don't want!

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't particularly want the NME to go away. i don't like it or buy it, but i read it in the newsagents every so often. that sentence made me smile, though - i can't quite explain why i find it so funny. curse my limitations as a writer!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i would read it in the newsies but it always seems to be in plastic wrap

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

That's so you can wipe it clean afterwards, Steve.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

how many of the people on the list had anyone ACTUALLY heard of?

at least half of them seemed to be members of the bands that NME has decided (with the help of the marketing depts of major labels and their print ad schedules) they're going to support as 'new bands' in 2004.

its amazing just how bad that magazine can get. just when you think its hot bottom, it gets worse. incredible.

and don't even get me started on the Glitterati. fucking gormless looking trolls. terrible fucking record. yet the NME seem obsessed with trying to force them down readers' throats.

Marc R, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

It really is the last days of Rome now, isn't it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and still no fucking orgy invites

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps we could orgy with members of My Chemical Romance!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Did you just read about that band in Kerrang! during your lunchbreak as well? The singer was all set to have his cartoon on the Cartoon Network when those naughty planes hit those towers... then he couldn't possibly countenance making money off such a thing, and took the only other option of forming a band instead... golden stuff...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the glitterati are the first band i've not liked on Poptones! it feels like the end of an era

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. do you love yerself, jim?

oh no OH NO - the nme has turned too pop!

jim o'rourke makes my cool list.

cool kid of death, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i love myself good and proper. and to be honest i don't hate the glitterati but they're no bellrays, they're no boxer rebellion. you can't love every release a label puts out can you? it's someone else's taste after all

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't love the glitterati. just having a laugh!

cool kid, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

jolly good1

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

er !

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

if nme turned into smash hits circa 1981, that wd rule.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i think it would rule. i want to subvert youngster into listening to jim o'rourke and other indie stuff. ha ha.

cool kid, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That is the one thing everyone on here can agree on, surely?

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the first place i read about MBV was in smash hits competitor Number One. now there was a quality rag

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't really discuss magazines because i never read them or newspapers. i sorta have to be forced to do it. ha ha.

i had a smash hits once. it had the cure and jesus and mary chain. i thought that ruled.

cool kid, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i was 13 once. mags were good back then

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't have this conversation!

were magazines good or was your perspective different and less jaded?

cool kid, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

quite likely both.

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i blame the internet

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Smash Hits, back in the early '80's, was an awesome magazine! like, they'd print the lyrics to all the chart pop from then, but also to "release the bats"!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool Britannia!

Justin Timberlake. Wow. Even Tony Blair and that footman Prince Charles buggered or the bassist from A Flock of Seagulls during their 15 minutes or even John Major (maybe) are way cooler than Justin Timberlake. I mean, fuck! Justin Timberlake. Huh!

Man. Justin Timberlake. Wow.

It must mean the end of the world or some shit like that.

IOW, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

true! smash hits was cool. i read all about jesus and mary chain and then flipped the page and read about danni minogue! it was the tigerbeat of the 80s.

cool kid, Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

RECORD MIRROR muthapluckers

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 27 November 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently not :)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted's TV show isn't even Schadenfreude-cool; I feel somehow cheated. Also, I blame Devendra Banhart for the New Beard America/COnfederate junkie look currently sweeping our pop kids (YES, even the girls!)I know y'all have trust funds, so buy a fuckin' razor, goddammit

Even if you don't count Karen O and Charlotte Hatherley, there's at least two instances where the girl out of a band has been picked - hell, I didn't even know there was a girl in The Zutons before now - above the blokes for seemingly no reason other than they can print a pretty picture of her for the readers to fancy.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Kerrang's editor has a dig at the NME

To look at certain lesser music publications, you would think this year has been all about the oh-so-trendy indie bands more concerned with their feathered hair and tight leather jackets than with making exciting rock music. But fuck that. Because 2004 has seen some of the finest, most exciting music to hit our scene in years - and Kerrang! is the place to find out about it. From Green Day's awesome return, The Rasmus's fan-dividing success in the singles chart and Velvet Revolver's glitzy emergence into the light - all of this and more is represented on the 15-track 'Best Of 2004' CD free with this week's Kerrang! Play it for yourself. Then play it for anyone who tells you Franz fucking Ferdinand are a great rock band.

...but then they give away a CD mostly full of rubbish !

Neither

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I know this list isn't all that surprising to anyone who has read the NME recently but, seriously, what a fucking shower. The Maggot, I ask you. And that dickhead from Razorlight as well. Christ.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's so controversial!

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha we have that Kerrang CD on in our office right now. American Idiot, currently playing, is one of the best tracks on it.

"Lesser publications" reads like when the Daily Star calls the Sun a "downmarket newspaper", and "the oh-so-trendy indie bands more concerned with their feathered hair and tight leather jackets" strikes me as a desparate attempt to mark out a bit of territory after a few years where NME and Kerrang's tastes have converged to the point where they're sharing a market

That's kind of harsh don't you think, James? It's not an opinion piece - it's just an account of a controversy, and it has quotes from both 'sides'.
