if i were to somehow get on a hip-hop station and put on PiL's "Fodderstompf," do you think I'd get away with it?

i think that if i were to do the above, this would become a big hip-hop hit. esp. if i did some tweaking beforehand!

The instrumental version (bside on Death Disco 12") might help. (It's on the "Plastic Box" anthology as "Mega Mix")

Fucking TUNE! I've played it along with stuff like The Herbaliser and Shadow in the past, works dead well even with Lydon's vox.

You'd be my hero.

I went to see DJ Shadow do an in-store with Grandmaster Flash about 7-8 years ago, and Shadow did a schtick where he'd flip a few beats from any records the audience handed him. He did some loosey-goosey stuff with a marching band record, gave a knowing nod to the kid that handed up an ultramagnetic mc's vinyl; but after 30 seconds of fruitless futzing with PIL's Flowers of Romance, he handed it back and said "There's nothing that can be done with that, sorry." I left.

Wow. Trounced by PiL. That might be the greatest anecdote ever!!!!

Considering how tight and spot on Atkin's drumming is on that record, this says more about Shadow than PiL.

That's what I thought...

What other songs do people think they could get away with, how do you think Renegade Soundwave's "Kray Twins" would go?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 18 March 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can find King Butcher's 'Spud-U-Like', (one off single featuring Gang of Four and Stooges members), you might get away with that. And also early Gary Numan - any track.

Oh yeah, I think you might get away with RSW too. You'd get a laugh at least.

When is "Spud-U-Like" from?, and anybody know how to write down the chicken insanity in "Kray Twins".

Jedmond (Jedmond), Thursday, 18 March 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

A bi' uh' skull duggewy!

Jedmond wrote: When is "Spud-U-Like" from?"

From about 1986 I think. It kind of blew my mind at the time. Incredibly funky, minimalist hard rock track which is mostly just drums and a very sparse, solid riff, and very silly, simple lyric - doggerel that just sounds good really, from Gang of 4 vocalist. No-one here's heard it, I asked about a year ago.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 18 March 2004 10:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds cool, all I have to do is track it down, download it, and then pretend I've known the track for years (proving your above answer wrong).

you'd be surprised just how out of time atkins is as a drummer. if only he'd used a click-track.

Oh, and also, no.

Is that the click track you mentioned?

I love that this song was made into a sing-along whenever they played it at Studio 54.

"Yr City's a Sucker" seems to be rather indebted to "Fodderstompf". The 1/2 mix of "Death Disco" is tearing my head off in a wonderful way.

Old School station, or Undie (sic)? Or are we talking the Hot 97 digital sound? You might fare reasonbly well with the first two.

I mean, I learned of Liquid Liquid and Art of Noise from my Hip-Hop circles back in the daze. Granted, they're seen as Hip-Hop history now, but at the time...
