Here's the thread where we talk about a lost classic... Game Theory!

Gil Ray was my drummer for a couple of years. How cool is that?

Game Theory: Classic or Dud?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but that thread was BORING. Say something interesting. Like how I saw Scott kick Donnatella off stage because Steve Kilby was in the audience. Or what the lyrics to Metal and Glass Exact REALLY mean.

Maybe not interesting to anyone but me, but...I once wandered into a fraternity house (don't ask) and found Game Theory playing there...this coincided with the exact moment at which my acquisition of "Lolita Nation" had flowered into obsession: they were my favorite band in the world just then, and what on God's green they were doing in some dingy, can-strewn basement in Massachusetts boggled me even more than what *I* was doing there. They played a boss cover of "Remake/Remodel" too...

I heard about a show when someone in the audience requested "Vacuum Genesis" and Scott (?) replied, saying that they weren't equipped to do that one.

"Erica's Word" was a classic!

It looks like there aren't that many GT fans out there. I'm disappointed but GT is gone anyway. I guess this is why, that and the Donnette thing. (above post..oops) I thought they were great.

They still have a pretty active fan list. If you go to the loudfamily.com website and poke around you'll find a link. I love 'em, but the last Loud Family album was kind of lame, and it looks like Scott Miller is busy being a grown up these days. They did recently release a DVD of the Loud Family on one of their later tours, but I can't vouch for the quality.

In my early days of getting into used vinyl, Real Nighttime was a discovery that pushed me in a good direction. It was almost 8 years ago, but I still remember the day well. It's a seminal record for this boy.

I like all the other Game Theory stuff and I'm a big fan of the Loud Family records. Scott Miller is one of the few lyricists I really like (I normally don't pay much attention to lyrics).

For me, the musician who's carries the torch that Scott Miller once carried (since, for now, Scott's given up making new music) is Stew. His stuff doesn't necessarily sound like Scott Miller's (though Stew is a known Scott Miller fan), but like Scott he's an adult, literate, dynamic pop songwriter. His records are in that 'direction' that Game Theory sent me toward.

My old band used to do an instrumental disco cover of "Together Now, Very Minor."

I just listened to Lolita Nation again a couple of days ago. It's hard for me to get seriously into Scott Miller's stuff but it makes for great eccentric jangle background music. Before I knew what Chardonnay was, I thought they were saying "shot her dead" in the same awkward way Neil Young does in "Down By The River." I even figured these guys were making a direct reference to Neil's slurring (I wouldn't put it past them!). Woah, and recently that group Vendetta Red has a song called "Shatterday"!

I think my fave Game Theory album is Big Shot Chronicles.

I think Bad Year At UCLA should have been in the Royal Tennenbaums. The movie just fits the images in my head of that song. I guess that is stirred up by Elliot Smith sounds.

three years pass...

I was at that show! Scott Miller had a friend/fan from California who went to Amherst and so Game Theory played the guy's frat house every year. One year they blew out the power and Scott came out with an acoustic and did "O Dana."

This band is hugely due for a revival. The idea of a Wes Anderson connection makes so much sense, in that both create works that seem fussed over with extra dimensions that most people wouldn't bother with. I think my favorite is Real Nighttime.

I used to listen to Lolita Nation obsessively. I remember being disappointed by Two Steps from the Middle Ages, but listened again recently and jeez, it's right up there with Big Shot Chronicles.

six years pass...

is it me, or does this guy sound remarkably like Alex Chilton?

Reissue of first album is out today, and on Spotify. I overlooked it when I first discovered the band, but now like it a lot. Kinda new wave jerky and spiky in an interesting way.

i'm finally getting into them, think they're my favorite rock band now
