Has anyone heard this piano player? I saw his drummer's (Ari Hoenig, who's like the best! drummer! ever!) group in NYC last year and only recently realized that he was the guy playing rhodes.

The trio record I bought, 'Welcome Home', is off the hook. The uptempo tunes are about as bombastic as a piano trio gets, but even the most over-the-top bass register slamming and polyrhythms seem melodic and in control (but not any less exciting for that). I think he has a lot in common with Mehldau but with more directness and less intellectualization. The slow songs are pretty and dark and sound unique. They do the most skronky yet together Giant Steps I've heard (um, over the Mission Impossible bassline to start). I'm surprised he's not a bigger name in the jazz world, or maybe I just wasn't paying attention for awhile (probably because he's French, har).

I've seen him play a few times around NYC, and he is always highly entertaining. I don't have any of his recordings, though I've been wanting to pick one up. I think "skronky" is a good word - the times I've seen him he plays a lot of high-energy stuff that is catchily melodic yet spikily dissonant.

Yeah, that's it exactly. Apparently his new one is more of a long-form sonata with different musicians, but I'm much more interested in hearing his older live albums with his trio. He was very cool when I talked with him, though apparently pretty unsatisfied with his playing that night.

I haven't seen him play in several months. He used to play pretty regularly around here, but maybe he moved or he's been busy. I was kind of wondering about that. But the times I saw him were with his trio. They were great.
