How about a new ILM activity? Every week/day/fortnight/whatever a song/piece of music is named and everyone does their darndest to listen to it- but I mean *rilly* listen. And report back here. Resist the urge to dismiss- this may mean you will end up attentively listening to anything from Lou Bega to Merzbow. Another way of doing this is for an anonymous song to be posted at, say, Grokepile and all of us blessed with MP3-listening capabilites will download and listen without prejudice. Is this a silly idea? (Okay, maybe not Lou "fucking" Bega.)

[I don't see the point of these posts designed to place threads on the New Answers page. If your thread is at all worthwhile, it won't be long before someone encounters it on the main ILM page and replies.]

"Double Life" by the Cars is the greatest song ever

Sounds cool to me......like a reading group...but with records. Does this make you ILM's Oprah Winfrey?

Mat O, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

im in

What a funny place ILM must be when a short, skinny kid living very far away from The United States of America can assume the role of the board's Oprah. If possible, I decline. Now, If you'd have offered me the role of Dr. Phil ..

This is actually quite a good idea. As for the recent answers thing, well, it's just a bit of advertising really to get a new thread noticed by people (like me) who look at the new questions page once and then spend the rest of the time just hitting 'refresh' on the recent answers page. I find that a lot more convenient.

If you want to use FilePile to do it then the thing to do would be to create an ILM username and upload stuff to that. I think a daily song would be fine, a thread each per track.

Tom, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Should we leave out the track titles? The thought of ILMers being captivated by the opening chords of a song until they realize it's - *gasp!*- Starsailor, Stereophonic etc. brings me pleasure.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If we're using a public site like FilePile, no - it's not fair on other non-ILM users. If we can get space and an easy upload method privately, then sure.

Tom, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Do Yahoo groups have large enough fileshare spaces?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

myplay.com offer a free 3GB 'locker', aimed at music files. you can sort the table by artist, title etc

m jemmeson, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like this idea quite a lot.

Nick, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think they should be untitled - and anyone who recognises the track should not let on, until the discussion is mostly over. that way people can have a guess at the year etc.

m jemmeson, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that is an excellent idea.

maria, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two weeks pass...
anyone still interested in this? i've set up a Myplay account that everyone should be able to get to.

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I, too, have set up a Myplay accout and have uploaded one song. I was going to advertise it, but I got distracted, wasn't sure what song I should start with and wondered if anyone was still interested.

Mitch Lastnamewithhed, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Still interested.

Jeff, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

m: if you're game, we could set up a new myplay account and co-host this beeatch.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my account was ilmlisten@hotmail.com, so unless you've got a better name...

more worryingly, we only have one other player so far.

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh, yes of course to co-hosting

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The whole 'let's listen to music in fancy new electronic ways' thing is a non-starter.

But the BASIC idea behind the thread is a good one. The day some of you people start 'seriously' listening to Lloyd Cole could be an interesting one.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but without MP3s how do we all get the music? there's no fun in just existing fans discussing something. also MP3s allow just the owner to know what everyone is listening to - the surprise factor

getting the files from myplay or whatever only requires going to a website (can save the login details in the browser) and clicking download on a track - that's it!

m jemmeson, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

pf: if I could visit each one of you guys individually and carve albums out of a large slab of vinyl, (without incurring unwieldy debt and hard labour) it would be done. As is, fancy new 'lektonics seems to be the best solution. Can I advise that you don't participate? If you accidentally displayed as shred of affection- nay,tolerance- for a Daft Punk track, my worldview would be left shattered. (Yes, yes, impossible and everything, but you don't want to tinker with these things.)

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 26 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>> Can I advise that you don't participate?

Advise? It sounds like I'm barred anyway. I said the thing was a GOOD IDEA, by the way.

the pinefox, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what is the url and how do i sign up ?

anthony, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What Anthony said.

David Raposa, Thursday, 27 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

all will be revealed in a brand new thread later today

m jemmeson, Friday, 28 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PF: I wuz just being snippy. No harm intended.
