Flipper vs. The Germs

Two states, we want two states. 40 million daggers, 40 million daggers, 40 million daggers, 40 million daggers. Two states, we want two states etc.

(BTW Flipper was the only good SF punk band (albeit a fantastically great one). Theory - rich showbiz kids are more punk than bohos, and LA is a far worse place to live = better music)

dave q, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave, you fucker, you always ask the toughest questions. Well, I'll choose the Germs cause they're faggier. And funnier. And more Bowie. Also, I can't quite recall what Flipper looked like, but the photos on the back of GI are unforgettable. I love Lorna Doom, she's the easiest.

But I do love Flipper. I thought the Avengers were pretty great, too, as far as SF goes. I've always been told the Sleepers were great but I've never actually heard them.

Arthur, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't yet heard "Double Life" by the Cars.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with Arthur in that this is a very hard call. Let's put it this way -- a show with the two of them would be godlike, but I'd want the Germs to headline. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Flipper had "Ha Ha Ha", "Ever", "Sex Bomb", and a damn near perfect album. The Germs had a perfect career. It's impossible to say and not worth arguing. But to say Flipper was the only good sf punk band is ridiculous -- there were LOTS of great SF punk bands: The Lewd ("Kill Yourself", "Trash Can Baby"...a Dave Q. band if ever there was one), Bad Posture, Crime, Negative Trend, the VKTMS, the Fried Abortions, The Nuns (the "Decadent Jew" single anyway), etc. The overexposed SF stuff is mostly very overrated though (especially the art crap like Minimal Man, Tuxedomoon, and even Chrome to a certain extent).

Kris, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Flipper was the only good SF punk band"

Ummmmm......NOT!

Dead Kennedys anyone?

alex in nyc, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dead Kennedys no.

Though Kris is right about Crime.

dave q, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DK = my choice for worst punk band of all time.

Kris, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Crime - "we don't play no punk, we don't play no rock - we play rock'n'roll! we're a rock'n'roll band!". Bands who dress up as cops - CLASSIC.
Flipper or Germs - my fav Germs song is "Shut Down" which sounds pretty much like Flipper. But hey wait a minute it was before Flippere wasn't it?
Flipper had very good lyrics.

duane, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dead Kennedys are the "worst punk band of all time"? Laughable, misinformed CRAP.

FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES, IN GOD WE TRUST INC. and PLASTIC SURGERY DISASTERS are positively seminal albums.

...Motel Hell..., Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your opinion is fine with me, but how exactly am I misinformed? Nobody told me they were awful; I decided it myself.

Kris, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe not worst of all time, but they always seemed kind of a novelty act to me.

Sean, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i can see your point, but mine's better.

a mouse, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The overexposed SF stuff is mostly very overrated though (especially the art crap like Minimal Man, Tuxedomoon, and even Chrome to a certain extent).

ahhh, fuck off.

anyway, i'd go with the germs by a narrow margin - although flipper were damn good, and even their 'comeback' album was listenable.

your null fame, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Haven't actually heard the Germs. I'll say Flipper. Melvins cover of "Way of the World" = CLASSIC.

If those two could share a bill w/ the Avengers, the Screamers, and the Urinals, I'd lactate. Ack ack ack ack.

David Raposa, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what about the Melvins' cover of "Lexicon Devil"? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Avengers were The Classic SF Punk, Flipper was more drunken sailor post-punk. The latter is good to drink beer to. A lot of beer.

jason, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, stop showing off, you nut. "Lexicon Devil" is fine & good, too. (Why the FUCK did I sell those CDs, Ned? Huh? WHY? Am I just a dolt?)

Curious as to why Dave Q quoted Pavement jonesin' on the Fall to open the thread, tho.

David Raposa, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hint: what's the song 'about'?

dave q, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Only liberals want to divide California in half..' What IS the song about, anyway?

daria gray, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hint: I'm asking because I don't know.

"There's no culture! There's no spies!" It's about staining Switzerland, ain't it?

David Raposa, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

To David R -- you sold the CDs because you were fucking insane, duh. Next time don't take the drugs first thing in the morning.

Give me a break, Trying to compare the Germs to....flipper?! Ha! The germs were just fucking amazing. One of the very first punk rock bands in l.a. Flipper was just....flipper.

Claire, Sunday, 30 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
OK, the Germs were definately mine choice, but if we were to compare them to Negative Trend, or if Flipper included Rozz, it might be another story. And to say Flipper was the only good SF band is ludachrist. Avengers, Dils(more SF than LA), the Nuns, ETC!!!

Mr. Green, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? The Germs? No way; no contest, Flipper wins for the missed vocal cue in "The Lights, The Sound, The Rhythm, The Noise" (live version on Blowin' Chunks) alone.

Love the sporadic revivals of this thread! Altho somebody really dropped the ball by not reviving it in '04 and '05.

Me, I like Sex Bomb Baby! more than Album Generic Flipper. But I prefer the Generic version of "Sex Bomb" to the original 'cuz of the saxophone.

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'm gonna have to go with Flipper on this one.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

Fuck's sake FLIPPER.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

Flipper, though it ain't such an EZ call as it might seem. Germs do get points for lookin' really, really good. And for being more catastrophic-like. Stuff like that.

Pee on people who regret selling the CDs. I regret selling the 45s.

And pee most vigorously upon the following:

"The overexposed SF stuff is mostly very overrated though (especially the art crap like Minimal Man, Tuxedomoon, and even Chrome to a certain extent)."

Christ on a crippled crutch. Germs are WAAAAY more "overexposed" than fargin' Minimal Man and Tuxedomoon could ever HOPE to be. And Flipper more or less = Chrome with regard to exposure: heard by too few, boned by too many.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'm seeing Flipper on thursday. I did not think this would ever happen.

cheshy f cat (cheshycat), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

i thought i heard something about the fake Germs (the actors playing the Germs in the upcoming biopic) playing the Warped Tour...how lame is that

latebloomer aka rap's yoko ono (latebloomer), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

The Germs are a perfect microcosm of the enthusiasm, ideals, failure, and
tragedy of punk as a whole. But I'd rather listen to Flipper.

shieldforyoureyes (shieldforyoureyes), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Flipper. The same incredible sarcastic attitude is stamped through everything they've ever released, and their riffs are unbeatable. I'll admit I haven't as much of the Germs, but I have heard a lot of indifferent mush with their name on it.

Soukesian (Soukesian), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

latebloomer, In BIG TAKEOVER this month it says the band is the original Germs (all three surviving) and the guy playing Darby in the movie - he sounds pretty good too.

That's not lame at all!

matt the queeg (veal), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Germs sound nothing like Sex Pistols. Germs.

I saw the trailer for What We Do is Secret last weekend. I think I'll probably see it. I like Germs more than Flipper.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:28 (seventeen years ago)

flipper still rules ok

sleep, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)

I love doing these...

Flipper: Debut single = "Sex Bomb"
Germs: Debut single = "Sex Boy" (B-side)

Flipper: Lead singer adopts self-consciously destructive-sounding surname, then appropriately self-destructs with heroin
Germs: Ditto

Flipper: Debut album, Album Generic Flipper, had no real title or cover art because it was "generic".
Germs: Debut album, (GI), for "Germs Incognito", had no photos of the band and didn't display their names because they were "incognito".

Flipper: Debut followed by Blown Chunks, live ROIR cassette
Germs: Debut followed (posthumously) by Germicide, live ROIR cassette

Flipper: Current bassist is Krist Novoselic, formerly of Nirvana
Germs: Original guitarist was Pat Smear, formerly of Nirvana

I'm with Arthur in that this is a very hard call. Let's put it this way -- a show with the two of them would be godlike, but I'd want the Germs to headline. ;-)

Basically this^^^

Flipper would have sounded like they were falling apart, whereas the Germs would have thoroughly and actually fallen apart. What a spectacle, that bad.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 23:50 (seventeen years ago)

Great bands both, but I'd choose Germs in the end - more exotic for the naive Italian listener.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

Flipper, for the heaviness. Love the deep, thick, garbagey muckness of their sound. It has a physical presence that gets inside me and moves me around almost unconsciously. Something genuinely cro-mag and preconscious about it. Germs sound more like an elaborate art project concerning the subject of fucked-uppedness.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

That's not to take anything away from the Germs.

contenderizer, Thursday, 28 August 2008 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Both bands are very psychedelic.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 28 August 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

How can you choose? Flipper because they were funnier. Germs also great but songwriting not as goos. It could be about song length. Flipper took things to their illogical extremes whereas Germs were not so prepared. They tended to start and finish the sondgs at what felt like the right time- so Flipper wins for the excess and the humour. And the loose loose bass.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 11 October 2008 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

no one wins in these battle of the bands threads. we all lose.

eman, Saturday, 11 October 2008 08:16 (seventeen years ago)

I would just like to repeat 'songwriting not as goos'. Let us leave it at that.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 11 October 2008 09:18 (seventeen years ago)

this thread hurts. i choose flipper but NO GOD and FORMING are probably the best songs out of either of them.

circa1916, Saturday, 11 October 2008 09:36 (seventeen years ago)

I was in a Flipper cover band about 19 years ago so...Flipper of course.

Germs sound more like an elaborate art project concerning the subject of fucked-uppedness.

i love elaborate art projects. germs.

Flipper by a lot. love the crucial early germs tracks ('forming' 'sex boy' 'no god' 'lexicon devil'), but i hate the turn they took on GI. Flipper, on the other hand, released a near perfect album by my standards, and they seem more like a band i'd want to hang out with.

if you can't get with Flipper then you are dead to me. otm about the Germs movie though.

Flipper had the best album. The Germs had the best single ("Forming"). They're tied in dead people (I think). I saw Flipper soon after Generic came out. They were loud and funny.
