which 'minimalism' exactly are you getting your hopes up about, nordic?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole thing!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

minimalism's already been MASSIVE:

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

A minimalist approach to production has been fashionable in R&B for the past five years or something. I mean, there is nothing even hinting at the harmonies/chords in those production other than when some backing vocals may be doing them.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

minimalism goes R&B:

hstencil, Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If you mean a minimal display of talent, yes.

Dean Gulberry (deangulberry), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting for Massamalism!

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 26 November 2003 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil i love you

disco stu (disco stu), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I mean Massamalism.
It's like gorillas on steroids banging on hubcaps with broken samurai swords.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

have you ever heard Mindflayer?

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm waiting for Massamalism!

Don't cheat, you Geir 'Custos' Hongro you!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(no, t'\'\t, Geir would hate Massamalism. It would be far too rhytmic.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

when I did that "minimalism's already been MASSIVE" post I should've posted this picture:

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Minimalism in dance has already been done, and dance will not revisit things that are already tried.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

geir hongro, please report to the cafeteria

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"This means something. This is important."

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i had found some better zombies.

hstencil have you seen the missy video?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

no I'm afraid that here in America nobody shows music videos on TV anymore, except for the channels I don't get.

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it's got the mothership in it.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

but no mashed potatoes?

hstencil, Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"Minimalism in dance has already been done, and dance will not revisit things that are already tried."

there has been a huge increase in the popularity of minimal house/techno in the last year or so,as well as in popular music...

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think the new timbaland sound is as minimal as it's cut out to be. how minimal is it to drop ten different sound effects in a track?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(anti-pedantry disclaimer:i'm aware that minimalism also has a specific, technical musical meaning referring to the type of music made by phillip glass and the like, and that this is different to the type of minimalism thats been gaining ground in dance music recently, but i presume were not talking about minimalism in the strictest sense of the word...)

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i was having a really hard time coming up with pop music that references phillip glass. then i remembered coldplay! but how many artists can come up with a riff that memorable?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(crosspost)
some timbaland stuff is really minimal (oops,oh my,are you that somebody) whereas stuff like the missy tracks tend to be quite different, even though they maintain the same timbaland sound

robin (robin), Thursday, 27 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Vahid, have you noticed how Rob Hood's minimalist techno is not dating at all? I listened to Internal Empire from 1993 (?) last week. Sounds like it was released yesterday - very unusual for a 1993 record.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 27 November 2003 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

minimalism is SO five years ago

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago)

'Cry Me A River' was the least minimal thing Timbaland has ever produced I suspect, but 'Pass That Dutch' and 'Cop That Disc' are him at his usual level of minimalism - not as bare as the new Jay-Z single 'Change Clothes' tho which stretches the Neptunes production ethos to almost painful levels (tho i do quite like the tune)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

minimalism is SO five years ago

More like ten years ago. But given the increased interest in music like Prog I can see an interest in greater complexity not less - therefore I'd like to say that Serialism Is Going To Be MASSIVE In 2004.

The Spotlight Kid (kid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Serialism Is Going To Be MASSIVE In 2004

Explain, please

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Serialism = fiendishly technical and complex, arguably extremely elitist.

Ergo perfect for the ILM Generation

The Spotlight Kid (kid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

ah right, 'round here it's called maximalism, i guess. i think timbaland is pretty complex, and not minimnalist at all, especially not compared to the 'tunes.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

'try again' is minimal
'cry me a river' is not.
most missy is not

'frontin' is minimal
'hot in herre' less so

enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 27 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the only truly minimal song timba has made, imo, is 'get ur freak on' (there mightr be others that i don't know of). there's so much stuff going on in his tracks, whereas the neptunes pick out one lead motive, put all their bets on it and go with it. that's the recipe behind their best tracks, anyway, and also 'hot in herre' (but there are exceptions, of course, such as 'señorita').

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No it's not

Simon Ratcliffe & Felix Buxton (eofor), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

have y'all gone haikunym?

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought 'freak' was cluttered, the sci-fi noizes. also at five mins, too long. JT's lp is not minimal as a whole, really.

enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it is

The Spotlight Kid (kid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

saxophones on 'senorita' = not minimal.
choir noises on 'cry me a river' = not minimal.

enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Minimalist answers to threads are going to be MASSIVE in 2004

The Spotlight Kid (kid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

agree with the two previous posts, which just support my point

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

that was a load of crap, en's post supports my point

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

No it doesn't

The Spotlight Kid (kid), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yes it does

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Serialism = fiendishly technical and complex, arguably extremely elitist

I can certainly imagine (or has it already been done?) a 12 tone techno/house single done in the style of Arnold Schönberg

It will sound like shit, and be completely unlistenable, but I can certainly imagine somebody doing it for the sake of being "groundbreaking".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

what's truly 'groundbreaking' geir? not schoenberg!! melotrons, on the other hand...

enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 27 November 2003 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Edit down to the bones; or, if you wish to attract leeches, flesh everything out.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine those "cutting edge" guys would ever use mellotrons. I mean, after all, some of the greatest music ever made contained mellotrons :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 November 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I wasn't wrong.

Serge Protecteur (nordicskilla), Monday, 30 January 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)
