How come no one has discussed the first of three limited edition Neil Michael Hagerty LPs?

...Cuz it's really fucking good. Shame only limited to 500. Anyone hear it?

roger adultery, Thursday, 27 November 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but neil gives permission for free digital downloading -- also, it is an excellent LP. with it and the first Howling Hex album, Hagerty is hitting homeruns this year.

Is it really REALLY good, though? Because if it is, I might be interested. But if it's like either of his first two solo sets...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

What label are they on?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ACH! More INFO please???

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Better than the first two, slightly less amazing than the last one. It's on Drag City but the LP itself looks all Siltbreeze. Cool. The first side in particular is very very great. Neil rules. Nice fella too.

roger adultery, Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

name?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I just secured my copy by calling my friendly neighbourhood independent music retailer...
"Hey dude, do you know anything about this NMH record?"
"Yeah, I ordered it 2 weeks ago, it should be here any day. I was thinking of you when I ordered it."
"Uh, that makes me feel uncomfortable."
"Well, do you want it?"
"Uh, yeah..."
"Then tell me what you're wearing..."
"Fuck you, pervo!"

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 27 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

FYI it's called "Introducing The Howling Hex Featuring NMH"

four months pass...
Anyone else heard "Section 2" yet? It's got a few more of those longish "experimental" pieces... repeated clunky guitar phrases, tape manipulation, spoken ramblings. And a few covers, sung by an unidentified woman. One is a really nice pop song called "Rock-a-Doodle-Doo," by the '70s singer/songwriter Linda Lewis. Hagerty plays some kickin' acid guitar, and the production is very pretty. The other cover is called "Breakaway," by someone named William Truckaway. Just singin' (by the same woman) and strummin'.

I know there's something going on in the "experimental" pieces that I'm not able to connect with or articulate (maybe I just need to spend more time with them). I don't know whether to call them "abstract," or say that they feel "unfocused"... he certainly seems to be going for a "difficult" vibe.

I'm a gi-normous Hag Head, but I have to say, I'm not thrilled by the $40 I've laid out so far on these weird little dispatches. It's the first time I've ever felt a little "suckered" by Drag City.

Roger, I'm still waiting on an elaboration on what it is about the first EP that you find so appealing ("his best work since 'Thank You'!," you said on another thread).

Morris - I started a thread about the second one a few weeks back - search the archives

To briefly reiterate - this new one baffles me. While I am overjoyed that SOMEBODY finally thought to cover the brillaint Willy Truckaway, the whole record just seems so self-consciously 'out' to me, like Twin Infinitives Mach 2 in places - then the inclusion of those two songs, which is even weirder. I've given up trying to enjoy this one. I'm not disappointed - Neil stubbornly follows his muse and most of the time its pure genius, and that's why RTX is my all time favorite band - but I'm not giving this a ninth listen. Into the stacks it goes.

It's difficult for me to articulate what I like about the first one, Morris, which is one reason why I think its so great. But I can tell you that the opening shots of "Santa Fe Springs" and "If You Can't Tell The Difference Why Pay Less" totally sell me - they both walk a similar line to my favorite Hag joints - like "Stop," "Know That," etc - that white soul thing. Like I said I can't explain it. Fiery Furnaces occasionally approach a sililar vibe ("Paw Paw Tree," "Sweet Spots," "Bow Wow")

Give me every record ever made by both Neils (H & Y) and I'm a happy man

Sorry, Rog, I didn't see your other thread. (It didn't cross my mind that there'd be a whole new thread for EP #2, so I just returned to this one.)

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Morris, you oughta check out Truckaway's album "Breakaway" _ i had it and sold it and now I want it again. It's really great

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 19 April 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what? I think the record may be worth it just for "Rock-a-Doodle-Doo." I can't stop listening to that song... so great.

A NOTE FROM NMH:
If you are familiar with any of my previous work in other bands: There is or soon will be a bogus form of a band that I left in 2000. They have attempted to associate me with this fraud so I would like to state publicly that I have nothing to do with it.
Thanks for your support, Neil Michael Hagerty

jh, Monday, 25 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take the RTX record over any of Neil's solo record.

WORD.

ALLMUSIC.COM (ddb), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

His blog is just perfect. (Also note the "Carriers" serial: http://hhex2.blogspot.com/)

I can't wait for his upcoming book.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Monday, 25 October 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
so for some mad, inexplicable reason, Aron's Records in L.A. had copies of Section 2 and The Third Tower for 14 bucks apiece and I bought them. Now I heard they're getting released in some form on CD in the near future, which brings up the question: should I sell these on ebay for a premium or be a miser and keep them?

gear (gear), Saturday, 26 November 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

Where did you hear about the LPs being released on CD? I've seen no mention of this, but would grab them in a minute if they were. I have all three but can hardly be bothered with this obsolete, ridiculous technology. Besides, these albums are too good to languish as forgotten limited edition LPs.

M.Z.U., Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

It was on another Hagerty thread. Lemme look.

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Here ya go:

Time to give some repsect to Neil Michael Hagerty

sleeve (sleeve), Sunday, 27 November 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Ooops, bumped the wrong thread a minute ago.

The cd is probably not going to be comprehensive!
...he’s
just completed work on a CD compiling “hits” from his limited-edition
series of 2004, we’re giving him hardest-working honors
