Abuse from teenagers - classic or dud?

Working in a skate shop has its advantages. Sixteen to seventeen year old boys thinking you might be cool is not one of them.

They wanted to know hear the kind of stuff I was into, specifically Kick Out The Jams by MC5, after they said their band did a cover of Rage Against The Machines' version. I half-heartedly promised a copy and a CD of some sort.

They've been badgering me and I'm gonna have to give in at some stage. So I'm copying Kick Out The Jams and I'm gonna give them a DJ demo CD I'd completely unskilfully mixed into a seamless (or not) flow of arsehole tunage.

1. 21 Seconds - Ambulance
2. I - Petey Pablo
3. Peaches en Regalia - Frank Zappa
4. Requiem pour un cunt - Serge Gainsbourg
5. Halleluwah - Can
6. Please Mr Postman - The Marvelletes
7. In Da Pub - 50 Cent
8. Chicken Strut - The Meters
9. Golden Path - Chemical Brothers and Flaming Lips
10. Drop - Cornelius
11. Dance - ESG
12. Tutti Frutti - Little Richard
13. United States of Whatever - Liam Lynch
14. X Gon Give It To Ya - DMX
15. Baby Doll - NERD
16. Beat Connection - LCD Soundsystem
17. Don't You Want Me - Human League
18. Everything's Gonna Be Alright - Walker Brothers
19. Modern Age - The Strokes
20. Last Song - Ivor Cutler

What kind of abuse can I expect?

they'll probably love most of it

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, "In da PUB." Fiddy's Irish? ;)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the 50 pence thing, isn't it?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

16-17 and into noisy punk rock themselves? I guess they'll love it. If they were 13-14, they'd hate it because it's old though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 November 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"In Da Pub"'s a pretty decent, sub-Pitman parody of "In Da Club". I've not heard the follow up, "P.I.N.T.". (But, even so, Pitman's address to Fiddy: "Get back into your club mate and fucking stay" is far far superior)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This whole 'hating it cos it's old' thing was a total baby boomer trip, yeah? Cos I never experienced it myself, either on the giving or the receiving end. Any teenager I know would be into your comp if they were serious about music. Anyone who loves music does not give a toss about the precise decade or century it comes from. On the contrary, such individuals are only too keen to keep digging and delving, exploring links.

People who only love the music they grew up with are not really into music at all, they want something in the background while they nibble their nuts. So to speak.

When people over 40 start going on about generation gaps, how past it they are, etc, or preface something with 'I'm an old fogey, I can't get today's music' then why not treat them with undisguised contempt? They're practically bragging about their own ignorance. I don't care what age they are if they're like that, who wants to know someone who's proud of not wanting to listen and learn?

Oooh, I got my dander up all of a sudden. I'm feeling quite flustered and oddly excited. Nurse!!!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"dander"?!

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

dander.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Take a gander at my dander, panda.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"panda"???

troughman (gaz), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly he meant "Now give me a hander."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 28 November 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

mister highlander

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Land a panda on me industrial sander, Randa!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone catch that john doyle thing btw?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, well spotted. I loved it. You?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

thought the central relationship was problematic, but ,yeah, loved it. loved bullet! haha i think i went to school with those guys.

isn't 'randa short for miranda though? funny name for an afghani.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it was all about him and his relationship with his mates and dad really wasn't it? The woman angle remained mysterious. That was typically Australian. But I liked it all the same, esp the acting and the authetically suburban vibe. Beatrifully filmed too.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

are you sure it was randa not radha?

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No Jim, I'm pretty sure it was Randa - right gaz?

Talk about a thread hijack. Should we take this elsewhere?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.

I was just going to add that the perceived coolness of old records has a lot to do with the rise of hip hop.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that got to do with ABC television drama? Sorry.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry jim, if i was a kid and you gave it to me (the mix) i'd be pretty stoked.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 28 November 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they will have heared the Liam Lynch track.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 28 November 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you gander Robin Zander?

Speedy Gonzalas (Speedy Gonzalas), Friday, 28 November 2003 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say something useful about a point way back there but frankly, I don't give a verander.

Rob M (Rob M), Friday, 28 November 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

don't front like youre too cool to think its cool that someone thinks yr cool! turning teenagers or anyone onto a bunch of new music is always great & yr cd looks really good.

duane, Friday, 28 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Chemical Brothers and Flaming Lips? The Strokes? Fucking 50 CENT?

Isn't this the shit that underage kids without music taste listen to anyway? I'll do my best to ignore the (shudder) MC5, and the fact that you shoulda really put in 'Willie the Pimp' over P&R, but why don't you make it really weird and put in some fucking Radiohead or something. Your compilation sucks.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 28 November 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Little Richard, Ivor Cutler, Serge, ESG - some really great and inspired juxtapositions.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to get mad, until I saw you said "Willie the Pimp over P&R" and I realized that you're just retarded.

David Allen, Saturday, 29 November 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell us how it works out, Jim! There's quite a lot on there that I'm sure they'll like, but I'll be delighted if the stuff they get into is actually the shit that I don't think will go over too well, like Serge & Zappa.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 29 November 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like an experiment that CD. No-one knows what's going to happen. You will tell us what happened, won't you?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How did you manage to fit all that on there with "Halleluwah?"

billstevejim, Saturday, 29 November 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Duane, it's not that I'm fronting about wanting people to think I'm cool. It's just I have a little suspicion that they'll reckon I'm not quite as cool as they thought - either cos I'm not or cos they'll think 'he likes MC5 and Human League' or whatever.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

How did you manage to fit all that on there with "Halleluwah?"

I cheated and faded it out. It was originally a demo CD to try and get some DJ gigs after I moved back home (it failed miserably, I got one phone call from a club owner asking 'what's this weird jazz shit?', 'do you take lots of drugs?' and telling me he'll send the CD to his worst enemy.) So cut it short for DJing reasons rather compilation reasons or not wanting to put on the end of the song etc.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chemical Brothers and Flaming Lips? The Strokes? Fucking 50 CENT?"

As I said, it was a DJ CD and compiled as such. And as Lauren and Dom said, it's 50 Pence.

And, alas, it wasn't made to show what 'weird' taste I've got, and anyway, even if the above were shitty, playing 50 Cent (or 50 Pence) to teenage punks has it's own ironic/weirdo vibe.

Cf. LCD Soundsytem 'playing Daft Punk to the rock kids etc etc'.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad most of you liked it though. I'll let you know how it goes down...

Out of interest, have you guys heard Ambulance's cover of 21 Seconds? They're friends of mine, but I'm never too sure quite how 'big' that song got. I hear stories of it getting played on the radio and in hip clubs in London etc but never know whether to believe them...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
Did they like it Jim?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Sunday, 28 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
Yes. Not much discussion though...

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ambulance rule.

searchanddelete, Sunday, 18 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes searchanddelete. Do you mind me asking you how you found them? You got their EP presumably?
