Fagen's "The Nightfly" is about as good as most Dan stuff, a lot cuter tho

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll second The Nightfly...

I've heard that Becker's "11 Tracks of Wack" (at least I think that's the title) is pretty good, but I've never gone out of my way to track it down.

Will (will), Friday, 28 November 2003 04:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nightfly is cool!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that one counts as a Dan album, IMO.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, it's too optimistic.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

slsk 'em all... there are only three between the both of 'em so you have very little to lose really. start with the nightfly and if you like that move on to kamakiriad.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i always assumed i'd prefer Becker's album...but i'll sample them all tonight - thanks fellas!

roger adultery, Friday, 28 November 2003 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

nah, it's too optimistic.

Not really. "IGY" is the past looking at a future that never happened... very ironic. And that Cuba song is pretty brutal.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, depends whether you prefer sd's groove/blues side (becker) or their melodic pop side (fagen). guess which i like.

Not really. "IGY" is the past looking at a future that never happened... very ironic.

"I.G.Y." is INCREDIBLY optimistic. Fagen makes you believe the suburban kid narrator really thinks the future's going to be A-OK. It's like his version of the World's Fair. I don't see it as a backwards-glancing smirk; he's celebrating having been alive at an exciting/scary/fascinating time in history.

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. Maybe you're more optimistic than I am. I chuckle a little when he sings, "By '76 we'll be a-ok." Surely there's a least a *little* nudge in that.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

donald fagen, "the nightfly" -- c or d?

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Who was it that said that around here every Dan lyric has to have a dark underbelly? Whoever that was OTM.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haha... I agree with you on that other thread.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole Nightfly album isn't ironic at all. It's a sort-of triptych through 50s americana as if was written as a travel/culture brochure of the time.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing intersting to me about anyone involved with Steeley Dan except that one of them was seen shopping at The Twisted Village table at a WFMU record fair.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:38 (twenty-one years ago)

kamakiriad = not so good!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Friday, 28 November 2003 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The whole Nightfly album isn't ironic at all.

I agree with my earlier self on the other Nightfly thread more than I agree with myself a few minutes ago. I made a better point before.

Nixed because of environmental concerns, I'm sure. The gutters are filling with freon!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2003 06:00 (twenty-one years ago)

'tomorrow's girls' from kamakiriad is pretty good. the rest of the album is so&so, w. somewhat cheesy 1980ies lyrics about a "teahouse on the tracks" and "on a night like this", this and that happens. the lyrics in general contains some vague new age inspiration.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Friday, 28 November 2003 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Kamakiriad. I was only 10 when my dad bought it upon release in '93, and I took it over as my own in short order. I can't be objective about it today, naturally, but I love it with only that one qualification. It's become an album that I know incredibly well. Those unsure should seek out 'Snowbound', 'Florida Room' and the aforementioned 'Tomorrow's Girls'. The production is as impeccable as the recent Dan-proper albums, but the arrangements are much fuller, and not nearly as focused on a central groove.

four years pass...

Anyone hear the new Becker album?
