What's the ILM opinion of Fantomas?

Probably a lot better on paper, right? I'm very wary of any Patton / Zorn sanctioned wank (make it a point to not buy anything on Tzadik or Ipecac unless it's like Melvins or KID606 or something), but i find it hard to resist Lombardo and Buzz, and I did SORTA like that all-vocal record Mike Patton did...and what's the difference between this band and Tomahawk? What's the verdict? Lead me, geniuses...

Fantomas is more um artsy/conceptual than Tomahawk, which is as much of a "straight rock" band as is possible with Patton. Fantomas is less hook/chorus-based. The first 2 Fantomas albums (do they have a new one) were both conceptual, the first being based on some French comic book and not having any actual words, just vocal sounds, and the second being covers of themes/songs from various movies. I prefer the second one, Director's Cut, as I think it's more enjoyable and fun and takes more time to develop the songs. The first one is kind of good in a really spazzy way, but the songs are all really short and tend to end before they really get going.

I think they're good for a quick, fun spin, but they usually wear me down very quickly.

the directors cut is a great album with tons of replay value and many hooks! the new one is more along the lines of the first album. live they are breathtaking.

Better on paper is a damn good way to put it. But even right when I first heard Fantomas - the Reign In Blood medley - I thought they had everything backwards. I think it would have been better if it was Slayer-gits/Melvins-drums.
