He's coming to Madrid in a couple of weeks and I'm curious as to what he spins...is he worth seeing?

manuel (manuel), Friday, 28 November 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

my guess: something boring?

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 28 November 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

god i'm a dick. what a stupid thing to say. but truly, its not what would attract me to go out. i have seen him and can;t remember being amazed. cant even remember where i saw him.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 28 November 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw him abt five years ago and it was fucking off the hook. go see. much better than his records.

enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

expect old school soul-n-funk grooves. and a few Free Association tracks throw in.
not that i have seen his recent sets .. just going by recent(ish) mix cd on 13 Amp he sorted out, and his involvement with Free Ass.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

13 amp is a fucken great label

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

he's a good DJ just because he knows his stuff - tends to spin stuff like Ella Fitzgerald's 'Sunshine Of Your Love', likely to play Shocking Blue's 'Send Me A Postcard' tho nowadays i suspect he drops in a lot of current electro and hip hop too

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

13 amp are rather fine. i want to hear the orig American Whip lp. anyone willing to assist .. as JZ are adding extras to the proper version coming out in March 2004 ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

extras? crimony. i have empeethreez of the original promo but i'd rather have the ceedee

the surface noise (electricsound), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well not sure of details. but they did touc up the reissue of the Free Ass lp, and i've heard they are doing similar to American Whip.

mark e (mark e), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I am quite a fan of his records - even though my boyfriend likes to convince me otherwise - I found his dj set to be horrid: A 100000 pound wall of white tekno noise.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

???? when was that DJ set nathalie? (he started out doing sets like that but i didn't think he'd gone back to it)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh uh, a few years back. I can't remember (read: my alcohol induced madness has erased the year, I only remember I fell hard on the floor after slipping on a bottle of beer.) Good to hear he changed his sets. Gawd, that was awful.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

his Essential Mix CD is pretty decent if i recall

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 November 2003 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not up to date, but this will pretty much answer yr question.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

much better than his records

might be true. Holmer's sets of late have been very much in the 60s/70s funk/soul/Northern Soul vein with, as has been said, a couple of modern bits'n'bobs chucked in too, and a handful of Free Association tracks too (a very good thing, the album's fab).

But yeah, I saw him in Hamburg in 1995 and he played very fast, very dull techno, so I appreciate the cindusion this might cause. Either way, go see him, you're in for an eclectic treat (just don't expect any beat-mixing - he rarely bothers).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

he played a few techno sets in dublin recently enough,i didn't go though, but he does still play techno
i think they're usually advertised as such...

robin (robin), Friday, 28 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

man, he must be richer than god after oceans 11, 12, 13 ...

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 28 December 2007 07:39 (seventeen years ago)

hence the reason he has a new record label, canderblinks on the go.
supposedly stuff to be sorted out in 2008, but with the history re 13 Amp i wouldn't hold your breathe.

mark e, Friday, 28 December 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

eight months pass...

anyone else got the quietly released new album ?
seems to have continued down the road of his mellow Code 46 soundtrack (which was released as a Free Association album) with use of fuzzy guitar layers and electronic ambiance.
ie. a lovely album for the onset of autumn.

mark e, Thursday, 11 September 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

yep, been listening just this morning in fact and really enjoying it.
more subdued than i was really expecting, not having followed him too closely as of late, but very well done and engaging

rentboy, Thursday, 11 September 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)

i am enjoying this album more and more with each spin.
though there is a nagging feeling that david has effectively updated (via eno) the joy zipper sound. you know, the band he signed to his now defunct label 13 amp.
however, i do love the fact that there are no guest lead vocals, any that there are, are buried deep in the mix.
also, its nice, and somewhat unexpected, to see jason falkner involved.

mark e, Friday, 12 September 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

no idea what his music sounds like, but he's always DJing with Andy Votel, so i'm assuming his crates are deep

jaxon, Friday, 12 September 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

This is a great album, really good to see that every single review, and all the comments here, have been positive. It's a major departure for him and a total success.

two months pass...

I am loving the new David Holmes record!
It sounds like he took all the record archaeology that he learned from Andy Votel and Co. and just... threw it off the balcony.

There is not one whiff of dusty records and old vinyl clouding up the cobwebs of the mind on this one.

So far what I hear on this record is a love of pop romanticism, EXUBERANCE, and SHEEN.
Great record.

oscar, Thursday, 27 November 2008 06:30 (sixteen years ago)

i absolutely love this record.
everything about it just works, from the sweet buzz pop of the opening single through to the eno styled ambience at the end.
