I vote for the following:

Deon Estus - Wham!, George Michael's solo stuff
Richard Finch - K.C. & the Sunshine Band

(the dark side of this thread: good bands with crap bassists)

Isadora Sinister (Catty), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

cool bassists are a hoax

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

enrique (Enrique), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 28 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you mean pre-Coxon-Exodus Blur or post-Coxon-Exodus Blur?

Catty (Catty), Friday, 28 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Housemartins?

Nick H (Nick H), Friday, 28 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Virtually any band with Sara Lee in it (e.g. late-period Gang of 4, late-period B-52's); Sara Lee.

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 28 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Wings

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 28 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed, with the notable exception of Fripp's League of Gentlemen -- who IMO wiped the floor with Belew-era KC -- although I've yet to hear the lp from 1996 and maybe this conforms with Mr. Wolk's theory.

Someone's bound to say Weather Report (c. Jaco) sooner or later.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 28 November 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

KC and the Sunshine Band are not crap.

But yes, good bass playing.

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Brinsley Schwarz, which birthed Nick Lowe.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

post-Coxon-Exodus Blur

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 30 November 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rogers Sisters

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 1 December 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stranglers

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 1 December 2003 05:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually love K.C. and the Sunshine Band but my indier-than-thou partner has Indie Rock Issues with my love of disco.

Catty (Catty), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Coldplay, because the bass player looks like Syd Barrett. No other reason.

Schwingung (Damian), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stranglers

THE. STRANGLERS. ARE. NOT. A. "CRAP BAND". GODDAMMIT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

JJ Burnell is a million miles cooler than the rest of the Stranglers, though.

I don't think Interpol are crap s'much as a wee bit flawed but the bassist is clearly far cooler than the others as well. Alex James seems a good call as well.

F. Anthony O'Reilly (Ferg), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

all crap bands have cool bassists, it is the law. in fact, all bands have cool bassists, cos all bassists are cool. yessum.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Squarepusher

Leee Trevino (Leee), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

the beach boys

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been said elsewhere but deserves another mention: Belle and Sebastian's bassist wrote a delicious spooky book.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Thursday, 4 December 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

but belle and sebastian is hardly crap without him (well, the quality of their albums dropped significantly simultaneous with his departure but i'm not attributing it to him...)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

all bands have cool bassists, cos all bassists are cool

Except for bands that think they're too cool to have a bassist. Or whatever it is that inspires this no-bassist trend in bands of late.

Liam Gallagher understands.

Catty (Catty), Sunday, 7 December 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Joining Oasis was the uncoolest thing Andy Bell ever did.

THAT Kate (kate), Monday, 8 December 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Joining Oasis was the uncoolest thing Andy Bell ever did.

Worse than Hurricane #1?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Just.

THAT Kate (kate), Monday, 8 December 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And yet, he is the best bassist they've ever had.
