I love you Milford graves!!!
I love Milford's leader stuff, but a lot of the records he plays on as bandmember are great too. Esp. Sonny Sharrock's Black Woman.

(hey ddb, what is "Shoot You Down" - APB on? I love that song. I've got the video of it somewheres...)

Do you need to know the rules to break the rules? -- free jazz, improv, noise, etc Thread:
I think it depends on the intentions of the musicians, mostly. I love both Coltrane and Harry Pussy. It seems strange to me to compare the two, though, because they're both so different.

how about "You're Welcome," the b-side to "Heroes and Villains?" I love that one.

Non-Westernized Ethnographic Field Recordings?
I'd love to hear more Canadian Inuit music, personally. A friend of mine has some Inuit throat-singing LP that is totally amazing.

Anyone who owns "No New York"...
I haven't listened to NNY in ages, actually, but I love that Mars CD on Atavistic.

The Funhouse Thread (or, more broadly: Stooges - Classic or Dud?)
yeah I kinda meant you Julio. No offense or nothin', but I don't understand why you don't like that big honkin' sax sound. I love early Rn'B stuff, wish I had way more of it (and a ton of freejazzers got their chops playing in bands like that - Ornette comes to mind).

I Think of Demons for You: the Roky Erickson (solo) Thread
hey so I didn't see anything in the archives (doesn't mean it's not there), and today I'm listening to The Evil One full-blast in my room. It gives me the chills. I love the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, but there's something about Roky's solo stuff that's more listenable to me, maybe in its blatant sci-fi creepiness and whatnot.
So, uh, my question is, what do y'all think?

Fine quality electronix for New York people...
Yeah, I love Prepare Your Self.

Incredible String Band: Classic Or Dud
I just got the reissue of the first album on CD this past weekend (for $11.99 in Louisville). It's totally incredible. I love Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, but I could see getting even more into this one. Next, Wee Tam!

Sonny Sharrock - Ask the Ages
hmm, yeah I think it's great, and also love Black Woman and Monkey-Pockie-Boo. Haven't heard Ask the Ages and I'm not a fan of some of his later stuff.

It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
I still prefer Nation over Fear, but I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that I bought Nation went it came out, it was my first hip-hop record, and I love it more for nostalgic reasons.
The "funny" thing about Professor Griff is that his solo album was produced by a white friend of mine.

"Steve, these headphones are fucked up."
Dude, I'm at work too. I just guessed that it was their parents like when I first got the dang thing back in like 1990 or whenever it came out. Then I found out that Rhoda was Britt's dog, too.
There's some excellent studio chatter on the beginning of "Irene" by Caetano Veloso, also with the sound of someone rewinding the tape. I love the sound of rewinding tape.

You know, I think Suzanne by Leonard Cohen is a good song.
Great song. Love the version by Pearls Before Swine, too.

Lounge Lizards - C/D
The first one is classic, don't know 'bout the rest. I love "Au Contraire Arto."

Spy/Crime/International Soundtracks of the 60's and 70's -- S/D
I know it's probably too banal, but I really love all the early James Bond soundtracks, particularly "Goldfinger" and "You Only Live Twice."

what the kids have to say about indie
Sarah Allen is really great and I love her 3rd grade record reviews. Glad to see she and the kids are getting some notariety.

why take a side? I love 'em both.

Albert Ayler C/D
Classic. Total classic.
Okay, so maybe not New Grass or Love Cry, but those are still at least valiant failures on Ayler's part. But yeah, you can't go wrong with the early stuff.
The live albums you're referring to are on Shandar, a somewhat obscure (at least in America, anyways) French label (with other great releases by Cecil, Charlemagne Palestine, La Monte Young, Ragnar Grippe, etc.). And yes, Virginia, there is a Volume One.

Seriously, though, I think Dread is great (as do a lot of others here, apparently). What about it do you not like?

kate, sure I like Spike Jones, although I don't own any of his stuff. Major appreciation for him, though.

Personal 5 Worst of all Time (2 matching messages)
Doesn't sound like much of an attempt to let it "grow" on you, eh? Sometimes that can be a very compelling way to appreciate something. F'instance, I hated U.S. Maple when I first saw them in 1995, but since they've become one of my favorite bands, last weekend I saw them and they were yet again amazing.

isn't hstencil drumm's chum?
We're friendly but now live in different cities. Irregardless of that, tho, his stuff is amazing and I'd think the same even if I wasn't friendly with him (thought that way before I met him, actually).
Pimmon's pretty good, I like the few things I have. Haven't gotten anything recent.
On a whole 'nother tip: I got To Live and Shave in L.A.'s The Wigmaker... double CD this weekend, and it's one of the most phenomenally fucked things I've ever heard. Probably will take a few good years just to process it. Highly recommended.

musos/bands you're glad you got to see before it was too late (2 matching messages)
I also saw Sun Ra and the Arkestra in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama in 1990. Don't remember much about it except they showed the procession on the evening news later that night, which was kinda cool.
When I saw Killdozer it was great, even though it was the tour without the original guitarist, still was a lot of fun.
Dog Faced Hermans played my college (along with Luna, weirdly enough) when I was a freshman, and they were amazing. To make it even better, the bass player (forget his name) gave me a t-shirt after the show (don't know if I can find it, though). Similarly enough, John Brannon of Laughing Hyenas gave me a t-shirt after one of their shows in Louisville way back when.
Also freshman year Charles Gayle played with (I think, but don't quote me on it) No Neck Blues Band opening (if it wasn't No Neck, it was something very very similar). That really opened my ears to more free music (although I liked some jazz stuff at the time).

Nice interview! Bummed I missed Red Eyed Legends at Mighty Robot, heard it was good. Wrangler Brutes are amazing, people. Also, I like the Quails, Seth from Circus Lupus' new band.
