For instance, I can't see how anyone can possibly dislike Kings of Leon's album. Has anyone actually heard it?? "Trani" and "Joe's Head" are pretty close to being masterpieces, IMHO. i also can't understand all the Darkness hatred (come on! "Friday Night" rulz!)

I'm with yall 100% on hating Conor Oberst, post-Whiskeytwon Ryan Adams, and Dave Matthews. But not the fucking Darkness. Not Kings of Leon. Mayber you've noticed I also avoid the Vincent Gallo / St Anger / Korn bashing.

Yeah Darkness is controversial but not unloved.

Even the other ppl here who like pop seem to hate Busted. But I think they're a Good Thing if a bit embarrassing on occasion.

I think the Darkness are pretty damn indefensible....just a one-joke, slackjawed pisstake. Ick.

That said, I don't think there are any bands/artists that are loathed by the entirety of ILM. There's always someone who is bound to chime in and defend that which seems impossible for any sane individual to stomach (hello, Good Charlotte fans!)

THE DIVINE COMEDY!!!! I can tolerate Bright Eyes and Ryan Adams in small doses, too. Blur, though admitidely I can see why ppl would hate 'em more now than before I discovered ILM. New Outkast.

Anyway, on "Promenade", there's a six minute track called "The Book Lovers" which consists entirely of Neil Hannon naming his favourite authors. It's really funny, because it starts out like "well, I say, I read Flaubert! Ph34r my sophistication!", but by the time he gets to the end of it he's namedropping Breat Easton Ellis and Salman Rushdie, which is pretty much giving up and coming out as the literary equivalent of those mythical seven CDs per year types. It's great. I know it by heart.

I don't think there is any stigma attached to liking the Flaming Lips that's worth paying attention to.

As regards The Darkness, I saw the video for their Christmas single for the first time this morning, and if you can't appreciate the comedy of it you have a soul made of anthracite.

A lot of ILM-hated bands I sort of like, in that I hate the adulation some of them receive elsewhere and can understand the hatred here - but still find the music tolerable. Coldplay, Ryan Adams, Radiohead... I'd never waste energy trying to defend any of them, they're mostly mediocre, but I have a little time for them.

Ryan Adams always seems to me like the male Sheryl Crow.

The Darkness are a great band for instance. And this comes from a guy with very highbrow tastes so I can afford to like whoever I please...

that said it's difficult to predict which bands ILM will or won't like. They have a soft spot for several ultra-commercial acts that in any other forum would at best attract mockery but on the other hand, with honestly no apparent reason, they despise some other equally ultra-commercial/blatantly mainstream stuff.

Maybe that's the reason I love this place :-)

Hmmmm....seems I've hijacked this thread somewhat. Sorry `bout that. Suffice to say, I've heard people cite Astral Weeks as....er...spiritually akin to Spirit of Eden by Talk Talk. Lemme say this. Spirit of Eden is so unquantifiably superior to this shouty mess that it defies all semblance of logic. Mark Hollis may have his odd vocal ticks, but he at least is familiar with the concept of restraint.

Alex...I dunno what to say (and after all I've already said, you may take this with a grain of salt,) but I reckon you're just...listening without hearing the damn thing. Which doesn't mean you should try harder (and if you hate Van Morrison period you should probably just let it lie,) but--another day, maybe. For me, the key to the whole damn thing is Richard Davis' bass-playing, which lends a certain buoyancy throughout. As well as the violins on "Cypress Avenue," which sound to me like early Spiritualized. (Vice versa, more like.) I hated this record, once, at a time when I was young enough to dislike jazz, say, in general. Then I figured it out (a rather arcane way to put it--implying it needs "figuring," which it doesn't,) and thought, well, it's one of the greatest records ever made. I don't love Van's other records--most of them--to this very day. His voice, though, is the least of it. The pleasure of this record is in the whole, not the parts...

I suspect I'm preaching to the never-to-be-converted, however...

i own several turin brakes records. i have almost the entire coldplay discography up to but not including the "rush of blood" album. i own every radiohead single and think that they are likely the best b-sides band ever. i own more tweepop records than most people would imagine even exists. but that's about it really.

Is there anyone else here who love love LOVES "Madame George" but doesn't really give a shit about any of the other songs on Astral Weeks?

Anyway, as for the thread topic, I'd mention someone like James Taylor or Jordie or These Animal Men, but then someone really hardcore will come along and expose me as the dilettante I really am.

And I'm not a big Kajagoogoo fan, but Limahl's "Never Ending Story" is one of my favorite records.

The only time the wolves decended upon one of my posts was about liking that record from The D4. It is big dumb rock, but I liked the album OK.

Love is a strong word. I suppose the only couple of bands that I really love that people have slagged around these parts are Tortoise and Shellac. Those two bands mean something to me and I have checked both out live a few times. I think alot of the trashing of Shellac is perhaps more aimed at Albini.

It is OK with me. I can't understand why people are so nutty about Vlad Delay (is Luomo really all that?) or Matthew Herbert or Pulp or Blur or bunches of music that I never got around to checking out. Many of the bands that end up with these really lenghty diatriabes, I haven't heard anyway or really don't see checking out.

I did ended up checking out Radio 4 and Interpol after checking out the slagging around here piqued my curiousity, got records by both, but cannot describe my interest in them as "love".
