Commercials and Their Songs

Are there some commercials you hate just because of the song playing in the backround?

yes- almost all of them.

pete from the street, Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Give an example.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 29 November 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the two examples that jump out at me are Coors Beer (they seem to love really bad rock ala Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, etc..), and every car commercial- the ones that play cheesy old rock like Led Zeppelin, as well as the trendy VW ones that play Stereolab, Nick Drake, etc.. because I know they're targeting my generation, and the music is actually decent, but I don't want to have that association with volkswagen every time I hear that music now... (so even good music is bad in commercials- unless it is a totally amazing commercial - cant think of any at the moment, because there there are hardly any in existence).

The only commercial that had a song I liked was the BestBuy one for the speakers. They were playing the Foo Fighters "Low" in the backround.

the cadillac commercials with led zeppelin are working, they are becoming more hip as the average age of a cadillac buyer has dropped from 73 to like 71.

Is it just me, or wasnt My Bloody Valentine's Sunny Sundae Smile used in a commercial? I could have sword I heard it. Maybe a movie.

love/hate the (uk) mercedes advert with windowlicker in the background. it's sexy and effective, yet somehow seems terribly inappropriate... or maybe i'm just generalising an anti-corporate stance over the musical intelligentsia.

i dislike on principle any campaign which assimilates a genuinely brilliant song in order to further the hip status of the brand -- eg, all mobile phone and car adverts.

as a rule, car and beer commecials cannot be good in any way. They are the lowest common denominater of western culture. most recent to come to mind is the one where a young buckeroo is sitting in the back of his pickup plucking "I Been to Feenux Arizona alltheway to Tacoma.."while his freinds groove. that said, Sombody gotta Feel this can be chant worthy given the right mixture of booze and pills. I once turned it up and forced my wife upstairs when it played on the tv.

Am I correct in remembering Lilys "Ginger" in a GAP ad?

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 30 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

B-but Thomas, the Honda ad with the domino effect and Rapper's Delight is like the best ad evah!

Every time a commercial uses a song I like,....a little part of my blackened, withering soul dies.

According to my friend, American Eagle clothing company now has an ad using the Sixths' "all dressed up in dreams". I haven't yet seen it but it runs on MTV. What kind of sentiment is that to sell happy funtime clothing?? I hope Merritt got paid well.

I can only imagine being somewhat mortified.

I like Nike commercials. Once I heard Bright Flight (album) in its entirety during a single Nike commercial. Very cool.

This guy's very upset about Nissan using "Heroin."

I don't know what it says about me, but his idea to license "Heroin" for Oxycontin commercials is absolutely brilliant.

Mitsubishi commercials are way better than Volkswagon commercials.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm all for songs in commercials if they can make me discover cool new bands, especially if the band turns out to be as magnificent as The Walkmen. But otherwise, it can be irritating, especially if it's a song you already know.

The Coors Light and their ilk bother me, just from annoyance.

I like it when a band I enjoy gets commercial time - Buzzcocks, the Breeders, the Clash, VU, etc.. Better them than Kid Rock.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 30 November 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Coors Light the "I Like blankity blankity whatever....and twins!" Yeah, that's INCREDIBLY annoying.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate that Coors Light ad.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

the VW/ ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky" doesn't piss me off like most of the others. Doesn't make much sense, but...

Will (will), Sunday, 30 November 2003 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha AND TWINS!!

it's not Kid Rock, I think it was made especially for the ad. My friend is completely obsessed with that song. He downloaded 2 different versions.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You friend needs to get outside more often.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My grandma said that version of that song was better than the original. Both are annoying.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Your grandma is familiar with the Coors Light song?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The original version of it. Made back when people sang about twins and MEANT IT.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to see "You're The One For Me, Fatty" used to advertise for Gold's Gym.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Your grandma is familiar with the Coors Light song?

Yes. We saw the comercial while watching football.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 30 November 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
I actually like that song.
