i accidentally unearthed his 'modern classics' greatest hits compilation last night, scanned the back but found nothing on there i ever wanted to listen to ever again except 'Wild Wood', but with the fab Portishead remix I don't really need the original - i'm selling it then.

the answer to the question is probably 'i was 15 and confused'

We were all sold a load of hype and big fat lies.
That sound bitter?

Pete S, Monday, 1 December 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Becasue he played real, oak-aged songs on a proper utterly non-plastic and totally authentic guitar through vintage amps with complete conviction.

Nu-Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Because Music has moved on, and so have you...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and so has PW!

dave q, Monday, 1 December 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

5. Optimistic abt prospect of Labour govt; though it was the sixties again

Nu-Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you were still nostalgic for the stuff he did between 1977 and 1985?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Because "Sunflower" was a good album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"Wild Wood", I mean

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ring the alarm!

Nu-Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Because broken stones is a good song? Why do you now like what you like?

jed (jed_e_3), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Mind control.

cis (cis), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

by you ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, sorry about that.

cis (cis), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Because it was vagely cool to like him then, and now it's not.

harveyw (harveyw), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez... I dunno why everyone has such a hate-on for PW. OK, his solo albums aren't great, but they're not painful either. I think that his first solo album (self-titled) was, and is, fantastic. There I said it.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Message to everybody that makes albums.

"If it aint great, don't bother"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

before i even opened the thread i was going to say "the portishead remix".

vahid (vahid), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, his solo albums aren't great, but they're not painful either.

I suppose they're sufferable fer people who worshipped The Jam and The Style Council, I mean, I'm sure most of Springsteen's post "Born In The U.S.A." stuff ain't that grand either but I happily buy every new album, so I'm not in a position to judge. But I do know that I bought "Modern Classics" back when I was a total 60's infatuated rockist and even then I thought it was dull as fuck.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought his 'It's Written In The Stars' single last year was alright actually

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Because u were stupid.

In fact, stupidity of such a grand scale means you shouldn't even properly trusted now ;-)

"If it aint great, don't bother"

No way! One of life's joys are little forgotten album track nuggets of genius by artists that were overall mediocre or just bad, stuck on albums that weren't great...

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of liked it, at least at the Oh aye, oh yeah period - mainly cause it made people realise that the Style Council were pretty good after all, not because the record itself was any good - all his singles of the early 90s sounded like "Dear Prudence" to me. He'd just come from doing a house LP that never got released; he was still pretty cool. It's when he got stuck into the "authenticity" bit that he really blew it.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
the king has gone full circle. when u look at him in his 'totality' he's perfect- except for his diet-ha ha- i saw him & spoke to him and his youth at soundcheck at the house of blues(solo w/ the oasis brother) and at the wiltern (w/a full band) here in los angeles,ca---he has really evolved as a political/songwriter/father/man kinda-guy--so we must give thanks for his honesty and his resilience--the brother can write a lyric! And the cool thing was that he took songs from each one of his "successful" eras and ... did them w/such authenticity and unpredictable version. long live paul, mates!

tsehaieness, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

did them w/such authenticity and unpredictable version

Doesn't this sorta contradict itself?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The answer to the original question: Because then you were searching for good music, while now you don't seem to care much about music at all.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

nice to see you've been paying attention Geir ;)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

taking sides: Paul Weller vs music

pete s, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I really should marry my sister off to Geir.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, that poor wedding band.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Geir must wear the veil

pete s, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

They could have Oasis as their wedding band and spend the honeymoon listening to Paul Weller albums.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

In beautiful Trondheim.
