Damon Albarn's Solo: Democrazy

Recorded in hotel rooms while touring the US. Is going to be released as a double 10" limited to 5,000 copies, which are rumored to have already sold out.

Some good stuff on this, but it's mostly aimless. Sounds like the Gorillaz crossed with Julia Ruin at its best. Lots of noodling, but I bet he's having a lot of fun with it anyway. It’s mostly keyboard and drum machine driven; I was expecting a lot of strummy acoustic guitar stuff. I can understand why he’s not releasing it properly.

These seem to be the instruments of choice:

See Also.

I downloaded this earlier today. I've only listened to it once, but it was sort of interesting, but nothing worth holding on to. It's for Albarn fanboys only, really.

I'm pretty sure that Damon's always composed on keyboard more than guitar, by the way.

ooops. sorry for the double thread.

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

If I loved Mali Music and Think Tank, will I like it? I don't mind the lo-fi aspect at all, btw.

It's for Albarn fanboys only, really.

Albarn fanboys are a terrifying concept.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Albarn's been building a cult for years. Blur have several dozen b-sides and several Japanese-only releases - that was only the beginning! Albarn's always had the "Pollard Impulse" - he's only now giving in to it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Soooo, anybody care to answer my ?

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Albarn's always
had the "Pollard Impulse" - he's only now giving in to it.

If it means he'll eventually piss his money down a sink, I'm all for it.

These seem to be the instruments of choice:

The one at the bottom is a keyboarded hookah!?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Francis - um, you may think it's interesting, but you probably won't be really into it. The music on the record is related to the Mali Music and Think Tank records, it's more or less the same period. There's a track called "Back To Mali," if that helps you.

It's worth downloading, but it's not really worth paying for.

(That's a melodica, t\'\'t)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(me knows :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure most legitimate copies have already been snatched up, anyway.

It's queued right now...*frantically rubs hands together*

The title, it burns!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate you all.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

After a 3 or so listens I am basically done with this record. Anyone here heard any Coxon solo stuff that's worth listening to?

Matt Boch (Matt Boch), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Damon Albarn solo songs. Truly, the end is nigh.

Stupid (Stupid), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey assclowns, after being connected to Soulseek a whole night, I only managed to download Reedz, the second song on it. It's barely a minute long, if that. I got the short end o' the stick. Is it mostly comprised of fragments like this one or whole songs? I didn't really mind it as much as I thought it was kind of neat. So yea, whatever, I'm kind of a Damon A. fanboy, whatever th' fuck that means, now will ya PLEASE FOKKIN HELP ME OUT HERE?! This is an important decision that needs to be made quick.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

How much is it running for on e-bay? (banned site here)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to hear a really great Coxon solo song, you should download the song "Locked Doors." His solo work is kinda so-so for the most part, but that song is a real gem.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the dingus on the bottom a pianica (or is it just a melodica)?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got one of the DemoCrazy songs on my bloggy today, if you want to get a feel for it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

He totally fucking ripped-off the word "democrazy" from Fela fucking Kuti, that rat bastard.

I'll still prob'ly like this rekkid.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He acknowledges this on the sleeve, to be fair.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, right on.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I must have gotten lucky, 'cause I managed to download the whole thing last night. Curiosity is such a horrible thing...it's as if Damon has presented the world with a beautifully wrapped package full of paperclips and lint. Just pointless, and makes me glad to live in the downloading age. No one needs to feel any anxiety about not having this no matter how much you like blur (I like 'em a whole lot).

dlp9001, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I feel like a dipshit for mocking the title.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Democrazy" is still a dumb title, sorry fela.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

well i think the title still burns with even with the acknowledged Fela borrowing because Albarn's usage seems to have punny "demo" connotations a la Ryan Adams.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ay, Matt...thanks, yo. I didn't know you had taken the time to reply, seeing as I kinda skipped over it. Whoopsie.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

And yea, you were pretty much on point. It's mildly interesting, if nothing else.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Democrazy wasn't a Fela title actually, but in a concert DVD I have, right before "Teacher Don't Teach No Nonsense" or whatever it was called, he went off about how "democracy" is like two words "demo" and "crazy", like democracy is a demonstration of crazy. You have to hear him say it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Now, had the title been "DemoCRAIIIII-ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAH!" (*pronounced in full Hetfield*), I might have paid attention for a few more seconds.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)
