Erykah Badu - Worldwide Underground C or D?

I haven't really kept up with m'lady since Mama's Gun, but reading about this, it sounds like it'd be right up my alley. I've heard it sorta descrobed as an R&B answer to Astral Weeks - is that about right?

roger adultery, Monday, 1 December 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been sitting on my harddrive for about a month, unlistened. I'll have to check it out. But then again I was never keen on Astral Weeks.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 1 December 2003 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Killer, especially 'I Want You'... like chinese water torture, only pleasurable...

stevie (stevie), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a classic. it opens up so many doors for her further carreer, playing around with vocal weirdness, subtle glitch aesthetics and electronics. she has managed what her husband, common, failed to do because he tried way too hard w. 'electric circuss': namely to do a great and enjoyable record that is also experimenting in a credible way.
hooray for ms. badu!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 1 December 2003 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

It's alright. In theory I'm in favor r&b feeling good about taking their time with grooves and improv, but I haven't listened to those tracks (the first few) more than once or twice. 'The Grind' and 'Danger', the hip-hop tracks with Dead Prez and the ass-destroying horns are fantastic though, and the last track with all the female rappers is nice and P-funked up.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 1 December 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

this is crazy. finally a thread about an interesting album, and - 4 answers. sometimes ilm just makes me fucking yawn.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll go with that.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It might be cuz I barely woke up, though. I want to purchase this, but it's too damn expensive here where I live. $18 for an EP is too much, eithics-wise. I know it's over an hour long, but still...

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You should do it nevertheless. It's better than most of her albums and certainly better than most of the r&b/neo-soul/whatever albums that have come out this year.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Okie-doke! Thanks for the tip, Jay! Funk all that ILM hostile bulljive.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never listened to e. badu but she'll be plaing in Milan later this month (I think). Still, I don't think the label "worldwide underground" suits her... she's fairly famous!

Vaudevillian007, Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't heard it yet,
or else I'd add my comments.
later on this week.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

there's another thread about it here So what do all of you neo-soul haters ...

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats the name of this so called "Glitchy" track? i want to hear it.

jed (jed_e_3), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

not a great album - id get rid of a few tracks and make it a proper EP, rather than an EP with some random tacked on songs to make it album length, but it has some classic moments, danger being one of them.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

it kinda leads on to the new album overall doesnt it? its got that casual, ultra relaxed home recording, drawn out vibe and the songs also arent as sharp as on the first two records, which leads quite nicely into nu-amerykah.

titchyschneiderMk2, Sunday, 9 March 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

i love WWU. i kinda thought we might see things get even less structured on her new one based on WWU, but i can't really complain about the results. i think she keeps getting better and better.

Me and my baby
Gon' be up all night long
Walkin this wood flo'
'Til my man gets home
I'm at the front do'
I'm listening by the phone
But I'm gon' be here
With my make-up on

lex pretend, Monday, 15 September 2008 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

Funny, I was listening to this yesterday. Dud, overindulgent and featuring some creepy vocal improvisation here and there.

Vision, Monday, 15 September 2008 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

This one doesn't seem quite so great after Nu AmErykah, but it's still solid.

Eric H., Monday, 15 September 2008 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

By glitchy, do we mean that bit at the end of "I want you?". I really love this album and I'm not a huge, huge fan of hers. The production is so claustrophobic but totally expansive. Her bleary eyed vocals spider-web all over the narcotic-lounge arrangements. The whole thing feels like early in the morning when everything starts to feel... strange.

weird re-titling of songs going on in that post.

one year passes...

"Danger" is such a banger

Don't know what the hell I was on about there. Anything with "I Want You" and "Back in the Day" on it is never to be described as "doesn't seem quite so great."

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 15 February 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

Still haven't bought this -- saving it for a special occasion, etc.

You've been waiting seven years for a special occasion?!

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 15 February 2010 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

Yes.

i have put "danger" on many dancey mixes and it is outstanding in that capacity imo

horseshoe, Monday, 15 February 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

Eric have you seen her performance of "I Want You" on Chapelle's show? swoooooooon.

horseshoe, Monday, 15 February 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

OMG yes. Both Chappelle performances are <3 x 3,100,000.
