As I sit here listening to The Records' "Starry Eyes" (from a Rhino comp of the same name), it occurs to me that Rhino have released some pretty spot-on collections, and lots of them. What are your faves?

Mine is definitely the aforementioned Starry Eyes: UK Pop 2, from the D.I.Y series.

Shit, I was gonna say Starry Eyes too.

Yeah, that one is fantastic. And you gotta love that Bram Tchaikovsky track "Girl Of My Dreams".

Discussed here.

"Fast, Loud & Out Of Control" and both volumes of "Nuggets" are perfect box sets.

I really love the volumes of "Just Can't Get Enough - New Wave Hits Of The 80's" that I own, but they're damn hard to come by.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

"The Best of Doo-Wop Ballads" is a superbly-chosen collection in that style.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 1 December 2003 16:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

"SABROSO" classic latin jazz/afro-cuban jams

& what about those "Disco Years" baby!!

I have two different Surf guitar comps from Rhino that are great; one is in the Guitar Player compilation series and the other one is a best of Surf Guitar. Not one single song overlaps between the two, so they went perfect to each other.

I've never seen those Postpunk comps, I'll have to scope those out.

earlnash, Monday, 1 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Really, anything from the "D.I.Y." series is amazing ("Starry Eyes" and the many others).
It's criminal that they are out of print... is it just licensing issues that made them go out of print? There certainly must be some kind of demand for these comps, because when I DO find them in the used bin at Amoeba, they are selling them for 15 or 20 bucks.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Monday, 1 December 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

To elaborate the Jazz-Fusion comp, since it was a big influence on me in high school and I haven't thought of it for awhile, it's a really cool mix of 70s classics and little-heard stuff. It's got Return to Forever 'Spain' and Billy Cobham's 'Stratus', as well as some Tony Williams and Herbie Hancock Mwandishi, but then it's also got Larry Coryell/John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham/George Duke, and Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman doing 'Country & Eastern Music'!

Vol. 2 sucks though, it's all post '77 stuff. It does have some hot Brecker Bros. and Brand X tracks though.

Oh oh oh and "The Disco Box"!

Does anyone here have kind words to say re: "Blues Masters" and that Vocal Pop comp line ("Sentimental Journey", I think it's called?) Cuz I'm thinking about checking those out...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

the Blues Masters I've heard (two or three) are stellar. I'm also a big big fan of the Doo Wop boxes, Loud Fast & Out of Control, Nuggets 1 & 2, and oh yeah The Beat Generation box.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

That's for goddamn sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 December 2003 19:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

I really loved the Have A Nice Day series of 70s AM radio one hit wonders (Nuggets goes without saying)....

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 1 December 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I played the bejesus out of that D.I.Y series at our college radio station. Recently I found the Teenage Kicks volume. I'm assuming its out of print.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I went looking for some of the D.I.Y series in stores a couple of weeks ago (my 10 year old nephew is just getting into Punk Rock, so I figured they might be a handy place to start for him), but couldn't find hide nor hair of any of the editions anywhere.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

the problem with licensing deals like those is that they tend to go out of print fast, which I think was the case with the DIY series. honest, though, that new box is pretty great.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Poptopia" rules. Both the 70s, the 80s and the 90s volumes.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

The "Just Can't Get Enough" series is great too, but maybe slightly too extensive.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

i got Starry Eyes just the other day and it is genuinely brilliant - especially the title track which i'd never heard before (it blew me away). however my favourite is definitely Nuggets II

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Beat Generation box set, The Kerouac Collection, and Ginsberg's Holy Soul Jelly Roll.

is it better than 1-2-3-4!, though?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 December 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm assuming there's a lot of crossover between DIY and the new box set. I really outta pick that up. I second the post-punk chronicles set. It's turned me on to several of my current faves.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's HUGE crossover between the two.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Then there's this. Cringeworthy liner notes and less coherent than "1-2-3-4", but laudable in a way for picking up lots of critically derided stuff (mainly 3rd wavers and oi! bands)and giving us a less airbrushed picture of the era. I have a feeling Alex In NYC would really enjoy this one; me, I own it mainly because of the godly "Punks On 45".

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 1 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just compared the tracklists for 1234 & the rhino box...it looks like they share about 33 tracks in common, so that's still 2/3 of stuff exclusive to each box. Can anyone with more expertise here give an opinion on which is the superior tracklisting?

anotherMark, Monday, 1 December 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Cash from Chaos box set is a complete mess. I mean, there are some worthy tracks on there, but some bizarre inclusions as well ("M Style" by Lords of the New Church but nothing by Stiv's more "important" band, the Dead Boys?, "Pet Semetary" by the Ramones? Is that really the track they thought best summed up their impact on the genre?) Cover art's also complete embarassing crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes yes yes Alex, but NEW MODEL ARMY! THE EXPLOITED! THAT OTHER BAND THAT IT WOULD BE TRITE FOR ME TO EVEN MENTION BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW! Those uppity Rhino compilers wouldn't dare put that kinda stuff on *their* fancy box sets!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 00:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Faster & Louder: Hardcore Punk Vols. 1 & 2 are ok, not the best by any means but when I was younger they introduced me to some older bands I probably would have never heard otherwise (i.e. Angry Samoans).
