He played guitar with his band Hose. He had Marshall stacks in his dorm room, I was so jealous.

He plays guitar on Run-DMC's epic "Raising Hell," which I guess makes him sort of an important guitarist.

wow - Arthur, did you go to school w/ Rubin? That rocks.

Yeah, Hose ... man they were pretty awful. I think their EP must be the first ever release to bear the Def Jam name? They recorded it in 1982 so it must predate "It's Yours" by a couple years. Then they had the two tracks on the Touch & Go God's Favorite Dog comp and I think that was it.

Yeah, he started Def Jam out of his dorm room at NYU on University Place. At first Hose were practically a Flipper tribute band but they got better, I think. Never actually heard the record. Anyway, they were better than the other Weinstein Residence Hall band, Das Damen, who used to rehearse in the basement.

two years pass...
I dated a girl who lived under his dorm room; Jesus, the walls quaked.

I heard - but did not buy - the Hose record when I worked at Venus Records in the Village because it was quite expensive. The cover of "Superfreak" was far more Dickies than Mordred.

There are two Hose records...the ep and then a 7" single. The single is pretty good, esp. one track "Mobo". Pretty sure it was discussed in another thread. One of Rubin's former bandmates forwarded a photo a year or so ago of Hose live, and it shows young Rick playing guitar. Should still be posted on my old blog somewhere.
