Joy Division revisited

So what are your favourite JD covers. Mine are:

- Transmission by Low

- Day of the Lords by 16 Horsepower

- New Dawn Fades Away by Moby

and finally Ceremony by New Order (does this count?)

Does anyone know if NO (who are on tour in Europe right now) still play JD songs?

Love will tear us... - PJ Proby

fritz, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The version of "Transmission" by Low is a keeper, yep. I have a version they did during an on-air spot on my show in 1994 which I think is better than the studio take that surfaced.

There's a weirdass Italian tribute album that came out in the late eighties that is mostly there, but there's a version of "Shadowplay" by Afterhours that's wonderful, just acoustic guitar, piano and vocals. Great take.

Human Drama's "Decades." Lycia's "In a Lonely Place" (beats the hell out of that miserable Bush version -- gah!). Even NIN's "Dead Souls." The Cure's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is bemusing.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When someone from the Dictionaoroke project does "Love Will Tear Us Apart," then I know the essence of what was Joy Division will have been distilled at last.

X. Y. Zedd, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw Gas (Christchurch band) doing "Love Will tear Us Apart" a year or 2 ago & it was great, re-awakened me to a song I hadn't thought of as particularly good (= thought of at all I guess) for maybe the last 15 years.

duane, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Related..Joy Division revisted ..Two bands that have a very Joy Division inspired sound:

Interpol from NYC, hopefully a full debut album next year.

Spiral of Silence from Belgium. Their much delayed album Decadent should be released shortly.

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Galaxie 500's cover of "Ceremony" is m'fave.

alex in nyc, Friday, 7 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I gotta go with Tricky and Bush doing "In A lonely Place" from The Crow 2 soundtrack. Musically, it sounds like the best song that wasn't on Nearly God and happens to be the only thing asociated with Gavin Rosdale that I've ever liked.

Brenya, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Love Will Tear Us Apart' by Swans and 'Heart and Soul' by Kendra Smith.

Andrew L, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, I wish y'all could hear the cover of the entire album "Closer" I made with my Yamaha keyboard. I used the accompaniments. Some of the songs ecame like, polkas and such. Yet the lyrics are weird anough that it still sounds dark.

Pennysong Hanle y, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the only thing asociated with Gavin Rosdale that I've ever liked.
I'd go for Gwen personally.

nathalie, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Interpol! DJ Martian is AMAZING!

And I will totally stand up for Bush's JD cover, simply because of Tricky's involvement (when, you know, people thought Tricky was da bomb). And it's undoubtedly the highpoint of the Crow 2 soundtrack (though I'm still partial to the rote NIN-lite-moves of Filter's "Jurassitol").

David Raposa, Saturday, 8 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Nau Ensemble's 'The Eternal - variations on Joy Division' is a seriously harrowingly brilliant experience.

Daniel, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King of Convenience's version of 'The Eternal'

Actually, it's not very good, but all my favourite JD covers have been mentioned. It is a curio though.

DavidM, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

swing kids' take on "warsaw" was decent. the rest is rubbish.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whomever did the cover of LWTUA on the Means To An End comp.

NIN cover of Dead Souls

Related: Get Up Kids cover of Regret

JM, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David - where can that Kings Of Convenience version of The Eternal be found?

Damian, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You people giving credit to Bush are SICK SICK SICK. Not that I'm biased against them or anything, oh no. ;-) I agree Tricky's involvement is a fine thing, but he's working with THE WRONG BAND.

Steering clear of such horribleness, I thought of another cover that I don't think has been recorded -- the Bellows, an enjoyable if not stellar group from SF, did a very good version of "Disorder" to close their set last fall when opening for the Chameleons.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And now that I'm thinking about it, the Starchildren take on "Isolation" from the _Means To an End_ collection was quite good -- then again, I'm a sucker for most anything with Billy Corgan on it -- while Therapy? spat out a surprisingly good rock out through "Isolation" on, I think, the _Troublegum_ album.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, well, my whole point was that while Bush does fuckin' suck(they do!) for one moment, on one song, with a whole lotta help from Tricky, they actually did something right. This phenomenon didn't occur before they did said song and damn sure not after. Like the Titans going to the Super Bowl, it was a one shot deal. That's all I'm tryin' to say...

Brenya, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damien: the Kings of Convenience version of 'The Eternal' can be found on the CD2 of the 'Failure' single.
It's a very straight version, they don't quite pull it off, but it is interesting.

DavidM, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
Moonspell's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Honeymoon Stitch's cover of Day Of The Lords.

Knives Out's cover of Transmission.

Further's cover of Insight.

kREMLIN's cover of These Days.

Philip Obando`s cover of New Order`s Special.

Logan, Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, I think we can trace the whole interpol-sounds-like-joy-division thing back to Mr. Martian up above, certainly the earliest mention I've seen.

Xiu Xiu vs. Ceremony

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 15 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

jack o' fire's "no love lost" is very good

dan (dan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Bis' cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

there's some amusing covers on the Japanese indie-band tribute album Re:Movement as well. particularly the one of "World In Motion," because they greatly improved the song by removing every lyric but the chorus~~!

janni (janni), Thursday, 15 April 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

I picked up Les Bains Douches based on Ned's positive review on AMG and am currently rocking the hell out to Digital.

Are all the vinyls hot pink?!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 24 June 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Shadowplay fuggin destroys on les bains douches.

Drooone, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

The Killers did an........interesting version of Shadowplay in their Glastonbury headline set last night.

Drooone, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Hoos, I love you.

Doubtless no one cares about LCD Soundsystem's cover of No Love Lost. But that's okay. I don't mind really, as long as we blare Joy Division when we are drunk. That is the important thing.

Bimble, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

The Killers did an........interesting version of Shadowplay in their Glastonbury headline set last night.

Yeah, they recorded it for the Ian Curtis movie. The stupid sick fucks. Anyway.

And glad my recommendation panned out for ya, Hoos.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

Annie Christian did a killer version of "Transmission" as a b-side. Ramps up the energy level, I must say...

Mr. Odd, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

Hoos, bless you, for you were the only one who understood how brilliant the Warsaw CD was.

Bimble, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

Annie Christian

jesus: someone else has even HEARD of annie christian?

:)

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 24 June 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

I just rewatched 24 Hour Party people, so I'm going through something of a personal JD revival.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Well aren't you lucky! I still don't own the DVD *weeps*

Bimble, Sunday, 24 June 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

Grim - indeed! And while I can hear a JD influence they remind me much more of Wah!. No idea what became of them after their two outstanding mail-order only EPs.

Mr. Odd, Monday, 25 June 2007 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

i only listen to jah division

elan, Monday, 25 June 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

What, no mention of the virtually note for note cover of Isolation by the Norwegian Celery Farmers?

Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 23 September 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)

i really like calexico's version of love will tear us apart. it is playful and bright. i love covers which totally change the vibe of the original.

alex in mainhattan, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

the nouvelle vague cover is my second favorite version after the original (of LWTUA)

akm, Sunday, 23 September 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, how could we miss the legendary Norwegian Celery Farmers*???

(*Sounds a little too much like COCKFARMERS to me)

No one should release covers of "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Tape Store, Monday, 24 September 2007 04:21 (eighteen years ago)

i of course have that annie christian single. it's not a bad version, but i don't much like any joy division covers (other than the g500 one). the bedhead one ain't bad though, and the low one is ok at a pinch but just sounds like a wasted opportunity now.

every cover of LWTUA has been utterly wretched, and i don't particularly like the original.

electricsound, Monday, 24 September 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

i still want a jah division album

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 September 2007 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Technova's appearance on Fabric19 made me buy the double-A single it's pulled from. I think their version of "Atmosphere" is terrific. (the other side is A1 People's take on LWTUA, which is not bad).

Let's not mention Paul Young on this thread, shall we? Sorry... (I've actually got that 7" as well).

hey look it's something about joy division!

by jon savage.

am up for this though. typical of the shorthand used for the band, over and over again, is that a film shot in march 1979 is a critique of 'thatcherism'.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone else seen the documentary? i thought it was going to be boring as there have been so many retellings of the JD/Factory story in recent years, but was v. pleasantly surprised. the editing got a bit heavyhanded at times, but the archive footage & interviews more than made up - highlights were footage of JD rehearsing, playing "She's Lost Control" on Granada TV (i didn't even know this existed!), Annik being interviewed, and ... well theres a very odd bit towards the end with Barneys tape. brr!
