Another band-naming thread!

My band can't come up with a decent name for ourselves. We are a free improv group. We had agreed on the name Parking Lot, but then realized it was a bland name. We are looking for something that is nondescript, though; a name that will not allow assumptions previous to the actual hearing of the music. Our general attitude is to take the music itself seriously, but not ourselves.
Our lineup:
Aaron: Drums, Percussion, Glockenspiel.
C***: Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Guitar Loops.
N***: Electric Guitar, Trumpet, Sheng (sp?).
N**: Laptop, Trumpet.
T****: Acoustic, Electric, and Pedal Steel Guitars, Tenor Sax.

What do we sound like? Hard to say... The artists we draw upon include John Fahey, DNA, Sonny Sharrock, Can, Miles Davis, and Sunny Murray (not claiming we are as good as any of those listed!). Usually there are two decisions regarding form for any piece we play: Any strictures decided on beforehand, such as "let's all play an arpeggio of any length that has the note C in it", and also, whether, during the piece itself, I choose to impose any even pulse or even time signature on the music. Sometimes I don't.

That's about it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just a name. avoid cleverness if it's anything you think maybe with you for more than, say 6 hours. because that's the life-span of a clever joke.

There's really someone in your band called 'Cunt'? I can't make out what any of the other swears might be.

Again, I recommend:

no not swears! i just didnt put their names up because a) they are not on the board, and b) i did this on my own, so i didnt know in advance whether they had any problems with names being posted (i heavily doubt they do, but i felt it was better to err on the side of caution in this instance).

I think the idea for a band name is to be more subtle than anything else. It doesn't have to be inventive, we'll leave that to the music. I thought Parking Lot worked, but I guess it also borders on boring. I guess I just don't want anything I hate (including names that start with "The").

Rung.

-- It's means two things, one directly associated with sound, the other with climbing, descending etc (scales, DO YOU SEE?)
-- Due to its shortness, you can use really big letters when advertising.

No, I'm not on the Dark Side yet, Aaron. I just want to get us a name fast because I want to send out some demo stuff to clubs, and they tend to book your band with a higher frequency when you don't say: "Well, right now our band is between names and we are tennously calling ourselves 'Parking Lot'"

So I suggest new ones:
ratiocinative
atomism
groupthink

using the fourth letter in the names i get...

o** *

aka:

o-stars star,
o to the space power times space
o to the blank power times blank
out a
ole i
oaf i
o star-star star
oh star-star space star

you could also be:

Aaron: Drums, Percussion, Glockenspiel.
C***: Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Guitar Loops.
N***: Electric Guitar, Trumpet, Sheng (sp?).
N**: Laptop, Trumpet.
T****:

acnnt the first gig
a**** the second gig
r**** the third gig
o**nbsp;* the fourth gig
nnbsp;nbsp;nbsp;* the fifth
acnnt the sixth...
etc...

(i hope this posts right... hard to get those spaces correct sometimes.)

and of course, when i coded "nbsp;" which usually force a non-breaking space ...i forgot the ampersand that's supposed to be in front of it...bah.
