Sun City Girls are playing at the World Famous Java Jive in Tacoma, WA this saturday, Dec 6th. No idea when. No idea who else is playing. No idea what they have planned.

This link has the address and more pics. This is where i nabbed the photo you are seeing now, and here is
Roadside America's take on a variety of coffee pot shaped buildings in the country.

This Saturday is also my birthday and I will further commence the festivities at the Emerald Queen casino nearby, where i will WIN BIG at Craps and Pai Gow Poker. So y'all invited to either join me in winning big or just sit back and watch the master in action... *breathes warmly on knuckles*. (I'm upset I'm missing the freshly arrested Glen Campbell perform there by a day, though, due to plans I made the previous day.)

You rock master. :-) (Oh, BTW, send me your snail mail address, I have misplaced it.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 2 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Will do. Enjoy the snails!

My favorite part of the above pic, of course, is the anonymous hand holding the S&W brand can of frijoles negros in front.

haha for a minute i was thinking of a tea kettle and i thought db meant the tacoma dome.

I was this close to seeing Justin and Christina at the Tacoma Dome, but the ticket prices guided me otherwise.

I love the Java Jive so much that I keep its magnet calendar on my refrigerator long past 1999. They have a menu that consists of every frozen snack food known to man. The animal heads mounted on the walls come from stuffed toys. The karaoke guy there is cooler than Hasil Adkins. I took three day stubble there, and everyone agreed it would be a fine place for ritual sacrifice. Sun City Girls can channel the ghost of River Phoenix, who shot a film there. There used to be a flea market down the street that kept a caged gorilla as a crowd lure.

I was that close to attending a Christian rave at the Tacoma Dome, but I decided the acoustic situation in a concrete dome would be too unholy. Also, Tacoma is the Brazil of Washington State, it just really is.

Tacoma is also the COPS location capital of the country. "And here again, in Pierce County, Washington, Deputy McDurbone has to pull another skinny guy out from under a couch after a fight with his ex-wife/girlfriend"

is this the only NW show, or are they playing Portland as well? Or are they ignoring us due to our lack of coffee-pot shaped venues?

doug (doug), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

just got back from the show... BONKERS! started off absurd as usual and got really great... my favorite Girls show to date! better than the shows they did on their last tour, i believe.. got into lots of skronky damaged improv art rock, as expected, but more akin to their early records than i remembered from other shows.

And the band was introduced by Saddam Claus. Awwwww.

Photos will come on Sunday! (hopefully)

Doug: the Girls rarely play, and if so just do local one-offs. (though they actually toured last year) I'm sure for every Sun City Girls show you miss, I'm missing a Bugskull or Hochenkeit or Anne Eickelberg show in return.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 7 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, I picked up one of the new Indonesian pop & folk music CD they've compiled, and it waltzes across the line between dreadful and lovely so many times it makes me dizzy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i still need to hear those!!

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 7 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Anne Eickelberg lives in Portland now?

SADDAM CLAUS! HELLO! (He threw gifts from a cheap plastic bag out at people in the audience.. and I mean "at" people. You were lucky if your gift was found in a trash bin behind a thrift store. My friend got a run over scraped Washington state license plate. The guy next to me got a penis scuplted out of a large charcoal block. Thanks Saddam Claus!)

MORE TO COME as I grab the pics from my camera.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And shockingly, Saddam spoke to us with an air of contempt for "our kind". Like, what the hell did we do to you, pal?

First song was an honest creepy "a capella" ode to Tacoma, from what i recall. Charlie muttered "MURDER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!" a few times. Then it turned into them mangling an old R&B song with backing tape.
Then Rick played bass, and Alan did sax, and charlie on drums and skronked on for a while.

So, yeah, quite absurd, not too shockingly. Then Rick unrobed (not undressed you perverts), sculpted his tufts into a Bozo The Clown stylee and said "Ok, now the good part of the set. Thanks for waiting". And he was indeed right. What proceeded was three longish songs that were reminscint of the early more damaged art rock days of the band's history. (Note that Alan broke a bass string already)

At this point, Alan broke ANOTHER bass string, and Rick broke a string. Charlie's hi hat was falling over all the time the entire show.

And my favorite pic here. Mainly because of Rick's smile.

And I have more but these are the best of the bunch. Didn't do the casino thing, but great to see Matos and four other friends of mine who don't frequent ILXOR. Even if you would have HATED the performance, Java Jive turned out to be fun for all. It is an EXCELLENT place to hang out with friends. I want to go back there just to go to the location again, not necessarily for a show even (though a lot of rock/punk shows happen there anyway).

Hoooooo! < /The Nature Boy>

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you have your birthday fun. PUNK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Are the Anne Eickelberg references on this thread to the Anne Eickelberg from Thinking Fellers Union Local 282? Does she have a solo thing going now? More details, please.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the same Anne. And i just remember seeing a couple of listings of her name opening for certain touring acts on Portland line-ups. So what you define as "thing", i don't know, but she has some done some THING at least twice now on her own.. so, um, yeah.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I never saw the performances, so that's all the details I know, O. :(

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

That's intriguing. Thanks!
