Best Albums of past 5 years ...

This is an exercise I seem to do every year now. What are the best records of the past five years? In a way, it's a more instructive exercise than doing one year, because then at least I see what records continue to resonate for me.

So, what the hell, why not invite ILM into the fray, since we;re all thinking about end of year anyway. Here's my list (not in any order; just off the top of my head:

1999

Ah,

for some reason Soft Bulletin and Guerilla seem older than that

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Moby?!?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pissed that no one's yet mentioned The Avalanches' Since I Left You. If somebody doesn't do it soon, I'll have to make my own lists -- and, really, that's not something I want to do.

Aw hell. I'd kill myself, but I'll miss Futurama

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, God Loves Ugly was fantastic, but Seven's Travels I've been disappointed with. I'd put Brother Ali's disc up there first (same producer).

The Blueprint -- so good, Jess liked it twice. :-) Just bustin' chops ...

Coincidentally, John Darnielle will be writing 1,000 words on the Diamanda Galas record for me here at the Phoenix New Times. Running it on Dec. 25, like the creep I am. Hope that doesn;t pout too much pressure on you, John. I'm just excited about it.

Doesn't surpsie me a few of you mentioned Miss E ... I chose Aaliyah instead because of the spacy dub quality to the music ... seems to have had much more of an influence on the pop landscape since, and it;s the one that's stuck with me more as a result.

Some omissions on my list, like Stankonia, The Fragile and 69 Love Songs (two of which were #1s on those year's published best-ofs lists for me), are just due to the fact that they haven't really held up for me over time or that they proved to be thrilling eccentricities that were also disposable. Weird ... Tis why I like doing these 5-year spans, to look at the first two years.

OK, fuck x 100. Take my list, remove Mr. Oizo, insert Lifter Puller immediately.

(PS: It's actually partway Matos' fault I'm a total nerd for Lord Willin')

Warren Zevon, "Life'll Kill Ya"
Eminem, "Marshall Mathers LP"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

and handsome boy modelling school's 'so how's your girl' and dj shadow's 'private press'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 4 December 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I first thought
when reading Matos' list that
it was Patrin's list!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(oops, I forgot Kish Kash!)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, his 2001 is what mine would probably look like if I had no interest in nu-garage or Def Jux

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Clipse album is pretty fucking great.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

it still holds up really well, beyond the singles. i was surprised the last time i listened to it.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it might be the neptunes second-best album.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i KNOW it is:

1. kaleidoscope
2. lord willin
3. wanderland
4. in search of...

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Lord Willin' really clicked for me after I disregarded the monumental "Grindin'" -- as if that makes any kind of sense.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

it really doesnt "fit" does it?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

like, "grindin" would "fit" much better on under construction oddly enough.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That's part of it, I think; the key thing is that the song didn't allow me to appreciate the rest of the album right off.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Fiddo I agree entirely with that ranking of Neptunes albums.

My favourite track on Lord Willin is "Ego" - awesome bone-rattling groove and some of the funniest lines on the album: "So sad but we won't think twice/We're rich! We get the best judicial advice!"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

there are SO many good lines on that record. malice and pusha are passable mc's but it almost makes me wish they'd ghost write for others...

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i'm not entirely unconvinced the whole record wasnt written by the neptunes anyway

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what you mean but something about that deadpan affectless delivery often makes them funnier. They're like the friend you always underestimate in your head and then you catch up with them for a drink and they have you on the floor rolling with laughter.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, after i typed that i remembered the shift into the squeaky voice for "i'm scared of y'all niggas and my nerves is bad" and i recant.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Doh! I forgot Fiestas & Fiascos too. Scratch Jay-Z.

I'm amused at how Matos said upthread that Robert Christgau has his head up his ass. (I agree, btw.)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Seven's Travels >> God Loves Ugly, I mean

chris herrington (chris herrington), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what you mean but something about that deadpan affectless delivery often makes them funnier.

Agreed, and I think that delivery really helps some weak lines (the one that immediatley comes to mind is: "I respond with four words: rat tat tat tat") that would sound awful coming out a more animated MC's mouth.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect the Clipse record will be better remembered in 10 years than, oh, take your pick, really.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. I mean, I really love it, but I think a big part of the fun was hearing it after underestimating it.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

how could you underestimate it? I knew how good it was the first time I played it

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not trying to sound smug about it, either, though I probably do without meaning to. But it was just immediately apparent how good it was even beyond "Grindin'"

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant before the first listen. I could be alone, I guess, but I didn't expect there to be anything nearly as good as "Gridin'" and I was just blown away when I first heard.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i bought it used expecting absolutely nothing.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I got you. But still, I knew so many people who heard it that were like, "eh, it's just a couple OK singles w/filler." and I was like, "WHA?!"

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

it might be prudent to also note that i HATED "grindin" for the first 1/2 of the year. i can't remember the last time i had such a big about-face on a song.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

btw, i am currently formulating a singles thread in response to this one.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 5 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"OK, does Geir's list have more credibility than mine?"

Any list with the Dandy Warhols on it is less credible than yours.

2001
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Daft Punk - Discovery
Basement Jaxx - Rooty
Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - Fakevox
Gorillaz - Gorillaz
N*E*R*D - In Search Of
Playgroup - Playgroup
Kelis, Aaliyah and Missy would probably be here too if I'd really listened to 'em, but this wasn't a hot year for albums, mainly cause all I did was buy records from the past. This was also the year of Michael Jackson's slight return, which was hardly inspiring.

2002
Missy Elliott - Under Construction
Justin Timberlake - Justified
Cornelius - Point
Lemon Jelly - Lost Horizons
So...that's only 4. Either albums were either more useless this year or my memory's been erased Affleck style. Truth is, probably the same reasons as 2001 and the jury's still out on Xtina's Stripped. Deadringer turned out to be dull after all and the Private Press and Angels With Dirty Faces weren't consistent enough.

2003
Richard X - Presents His X-Factor Volume 1
Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash
Bubba Sparxxx - Deliverance
The Rapture - Echoes
Audio Bullys - Ego War
Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground
Outkast - Speakerboxx/The Love Below
Donna Summer - Bad Girls Deluxe (best reissue)
Kiley Dean - Simple Girl (or maybe next year once Interscope quit sending memos around the HQ about fucking this album up the ass)
Provisional places for Dannii Minogue - Neon Nights, Ms Jade - Girl Interrupted, Siobhan Donaghy - Revolution In Me, Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People, Goldfrapp - Black Cherry, Luomo - The Present Lover and the Sugababes - Three. Dizzee is the perplexer. There are 2 great songs on the Fannypack record, y'know.

Final analysis: must actually listen to a Jay-Z album for once in my life.

2001 MIA: The Beta Band - Hot Shots II

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

These are the albums I associate the most with each year (I don't necessarily think they're the best in all cases)

2003 - Stephen Malkmus - Pig Lib
2002 - Boards Of Canada - Geogaddi
2001 - Electric Wizard - Let Us Prey
2000 - Radiohead - Kid A
1999 - Blur - 13

Some of these I can't believe were so long ago!
