aaaaaaaaaand here it is.

01 "That's Too Bad" (from 1978 - The Plan compilation)
02 "This Is My Life" (from 1978 - The Plan compilation)
03 "Bombers" (from 1978 - The Plan compilation)
04 "Listen to the Sirens" (from Tubeway Army)
05 "My Shadow in Vain" (from Tubeway Army)
06 "Friends" (from Tubeway Army)
07 "Are You Real?" (from Tubeway Army)
08 "Me! I Disconnect from You" (from Replicas)
09 "You Are in My Vision" (from Replicas)
10 "Are 'Friends' Electric?" (from Replicas)
11 "It Must Have Been Years" (from Replicas)
12 "Down in the Park" (from Replicas)
13 "Cars" (from The Pleasure Principle)
14 "Metal" (from The Pleasure Principle)
15 "M.E." (from The Pleasure Principle)
16 "Tracks" (from The Pleasure Principle)
17 "This Wreckage" (from Telekon)
18 "Remind Me to Smile" (from Telekon)
19 "We Are Glass" (single, from Telekon reissue)
20 "Please Push No More" (from Telekon)

Even if I've heard Dance and enjoyed it, I figure a chronological "best of" works great with Numan, and you can't end with anything other than "Please Push No More"... (even though the piano version of "Down In The Park" makes a nice bonus epilogue).

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd include "Jo the Waiter" from Tubeway Army and "I Dream of Wires" from Telekon; not immediately sure what I would switch out to make room, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, mine actually clocks in at just under 78 minutes, so if you got a really short song you want to get in and you're switching out songs for shorter ones, you can sneak an extra in. I believe in you, Ned Raggett.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You poor soul kind friend. "Jo the Waiter" would just make it in, I think, it's definitely under three minutes. "I Dream of Wires" is still U+K, though. *reviews songlist* "This is My Life" and "Listen to the Sirens" if I had to choose songs to remove.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Our people will talk with your people, and we will do a powerlunch to resume talks on the Numan proposition later this afternoon. But I think we're on the same page, and we must remain proactive on our primary objective of optimizing Numan's best.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(and "This is My Life" is just so irrationally 'butt-rock' for Numan, which is why I wike it)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, see you at the corporate box for the Seahawks game.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, "I Dream of Wires" is great. The muted funk guitar during the section when it breaks open is aces all the way. I'd definitely make room for it on my list...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd get rid of "it must've been years" to make room for "i dream of wires."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting choice -- I like both "It Must've Been Years" and "You Are In My Vision" but if I had to pick between the two I'd say the latter. Both of them sure seem like Wire Songs Never Realized As Such.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i love the demo (or is it bbc session?) version of 'that's too bad' that is on one of the beggars reissues.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Demo I think...*checks*...one says 'single version' and the other 'original version.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this? No "I Die: You Die"???

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

*checks* My god, you're right! Mr. DB, our business deal is cancelled.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Then you invent the goddamn 85 minute CD then, Fire Honourer.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd probably get rid of "tracks" and put on his live version of "on broadway." or the live version of "bombers" (which i like better than the shouty studio versions). but that's just me.

otherwise, i really like DB's CD-R!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Someone should upload this hypothetical best of and make it a reality.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd get rid of some of that older, punkier stuff and add "Crash" from 'Dance', a bunch of songs from 'I, Assassin' ("War Songs", "We Take Mystery to Bed", etc.) and "Sister Surprise" from 'Warriors.'

Patrick South (Patrick South), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, more seriously, Alex.. I just never quite was won over by "I Die You Die". It always seemed like "We Are Glass"'s less inspired younger brother or something. I always preferred the slightly funkier "Remind Me To Smile" instead (the single that SHOULD HAVE BEEN!), so I chose that over it.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if what Ned says is true, we can just market our own and use it! Just a few licensing issues to hammer out, and voila! Apparently that hasn't stopped a ton of other labels from doing the same. And we could come up with FAR better art than the Graphic Design 101 meets Goth 101 presentation of most Numan comps.

ILX0R RECORDS PRESENTS GARY NUMAN's "'TRACKS': THE BEST AS CHOSEN BY ILX"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I buy that for a dollar.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And yeah, I did limit the range of years this comp covers, because I wanted something that sounded more solid than "Exhibition", where I was like "This track rules!" and then "hmmm doo dee doo... SKIP!"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello fellow Numan nerds.

We can include material from his recent return-to-form albums, yes?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Numanerds!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Make it a two disc set with the second disc being Dance and after. You could fill that pretty readily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Numan Illusion I and Numan Illusion II

Did Numan ever write a song about kicking Vince Neil's ass or do bad pseudo Nine Inch Nails parody flattery?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

or do bad pseudo Nine Inch Nails parody flattery?

Isn't that the Exile album?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

zing!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was about to say, that question was long since answered. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So, now we need a way to pit The Warrior himself against Vince Neil

"Maut-LAAAAY Cra-Hooooo a-wuuur
AH-ter Dross!"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Gary did slag off Steve Strange on Warsongs:

'I like romantics but I don't like Steven'

Which is one of my favourite Numan lines.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually Gary laughs at all of our shenanigans 'cause he's got him a new baby to think about instead of all this old music nonsense. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Cutie! Named after Killing Joke's bass player?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 4 December 2003 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hah! One never knows.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 December 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Each Numan thread that springs up every 3-4 months goes straight to the top of the list as all the Numanerds get hold of it, then sinks like a stone forever. That's curious, because his singles always do the same thing. They appear on the British charts, at no. 16 or whatever, first week in; then next week, they've dropped right off the map.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 4 December 2003 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Colin, what return to form? 'Pure'???

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 4 December 2003 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

def. something from one of the living ornaments should be on this thing.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 December 2003 05:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the post-berserker stuff would be a second disc. and i've found that i liked hybrid more than i thought i would!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 4 December 2003 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, something from LO 81 I'd think. The version of "This Wreckage" from that one is momentous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 December 2003 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I cry whenever I think about how 'I, Assassin' and 'Warriors' tours weren't professionally recorded and released. All I have is bootlegs with mediocre sound quality. Superb bass playing throughout. Man.

Patrick South (Patrick South), Thursday, 4 December 2003 06:01 (twenty-one years ago)

one year passes...
Revive!

Who has the Sharp/Numan album and is it worth getting?

moley, Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, and donut's selection is perfect (the whole of I Assassin would need to go on to satisfy me), but if there were room I would put 'Change Your Mind', the Sharpe/Muman collaboration, on there too. Even though I haven't heard it for several years, I bet it sounds grate in 2005.

moley, Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Muman, is it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

Gawy Muman. Contemporary of Job Foxx.

moley, Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

numanschantz?!?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:35 (twenty years ago)

CHANT (du Numan)

By the Monks of San Amigo Electrico

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Come on, Patrick just admitted he cries when he thinks about a badly recorded Numan live set, and you're taking the piss out of me?!

moley, Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

HOORAY

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I ended up taking away "Are You Real?" and "Remind Me To Smile", and replaced them with "I Die: You Die" and "I Dream Of Wires".. chronologically.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 28 April 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

OTM Patrick by mentioning "CRASH"

If you don't know this song, you need to.

ZionTrain, Friday, 29 April 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

eleven years pass...

The future thanks you, donut, for this excellent playlist - and I added Ned's two suggestions without removing anything, and am satisfied with my early Numan overview.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

Wisdom.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:28 (eight years ago)

This tracklist has a big big hole in it shaped exactly like "We Are So Fragile"

Cognition (Remix) (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:30 (eight years ago)

That...is true.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:31 (eight years ago)

I should put together one for 1994-present.

Coolio Iglesias (Turrican), Thursday, 2 March 2017 21:35 (eight years ago)

I would give it a spin, but I must admit I'm pretty sceptical.
