M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that really is pretty fantastic

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

your debilitating mental problem is, as always, our eternal gain.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

One might quibble about the Beatles choice, I suppose, not too strongly tho

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the biggest problem putting it together wasn't a lack of stuff--I had 210 cuts vying for space--it was figuring out which song by certain artists to put on since I was limiting myself to one. James Brown had seven I could've easily included: "Super Bad," "Soul Power," "Bewildered" and "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose" from Sex Machine (not to mention the 10-minute version of the title song from that album--I chose the single), "Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved." a similar problem occurred with Van Morrison, who put out two albums in '70--could've gone w/nearly anything off Moondance but went with the killer single from His Band & the Street Choir. tons of Meters choices as well. I was expecting this to be a lot rock-heavier and I'm a little bit sorrier it isn't, but them's the breaks. good thing I have lots of African and Jamaican records to make up for that.

Fiddo on the Roof: I love you too, asshole.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I am proud to say, Andrew, that I used the "clothed" version.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I SO support you in that choice!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wot no Tim Buckley? Soft Machine?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

what you see is what I've got. obviously my collection is stronger in some areas than others--like, say, Tim Buckley, whom I don't like, and Soft Machine, who I sort of do but am not that familiar with.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, my best friend in high school used to play Third all the time but I never retained it too well. I do remember liking it, though. anyway, I'm open to brickbats galore, I KNOW how skewed this thing is!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"THIRD" rules but all its songs are way too long

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it would rather fuck up the blend!

Couple of other things I like from that weird year:
Todd Rundgren - We Gotta Get You A Woman
Spirit - Nature's Way

Nice Sun Ra -> Xenakis -> Etta James transition BTW.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it totally works! the Xenakis opens with screechy violin noise and the Etta opens with same!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't you just love it when that happens?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 4 December 2003 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys turn these things out really really fast!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

NickB OTM

Matos, great list!

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez, Matos, you kinda dropped the ball - I mean, '70 was when Mayfield released "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below We're All Going to Go" and while "Move On Up" is a great song it--

68. Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Up Around the Bend”
69. The Stooges: “Down on the Street”

83. Free: “All Right Now”
84. Funkadelic: “I’ll Bet You”
85. John Lennon: “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)”
86. Ennio Morricone: “Citta Violenta (Titoli)”

I take that back. You are my new god.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Scotty does a version of the "Sesame Street" theme?!?!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Funky 16 Corners places Trespasser's "Bad Medicine" as being recorded in early '74, so you might want to go with Slim and the Soulful Saints' "Fish Head" instead.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

So excellent.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

you know matos my comment was more of a "we can smell our own" thing, than anything else.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I know that you big hunka hunka hunka burnin' love. [to fiddo]

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott: may I kindly suggest you look at tracks 19 and 107 again?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also kinda surprised that you went for "Little Wing" over "Layla", but not offended.

So it looks like a lot of those The Harder They Come tracks were '70... I'm pretty sure that's when it was filmed, and it just took a while for it to find distribution, but I always associated that movie with '72.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott: may I kindly suggest you look at tracks 19 and 107 again?
Oops--I *knew* that was gonna happen. So sorry. The hazards of reading these things at work...

Still, there's almost NO AM bubblegum, though, which I just don't get (you can make a case here and there, no doubt). Well, okay, I do get it, it's your list, and it's what you like...and there's probably a lot of neat stuff on there I should hear (a fair deal of which I haven't even heard OF). And then some stuff that surely won't interest me at all (like an obscure live Hendrix thing...who cares?). But that's lists for you.

I guess as someone who lived through 1970 (not all that consciously, but close enough) I just can't fathom a list for that year that doesn't have at LEAST Edison Lighthouse or the Carpenters or Shocking Blue. I'd also probably put "1970" by the Stooges on but I'm obvious that way.

I think "Layla" (the single anyway) is '71.

s woods, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

there's nothing "obscure" about the live Hendrix--it's been on at least two albums (Rainbow Bridge and Blues). it's also one of the best things he ever did.

Scott, I don't own any Have a Nice Day comps. does that help?

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Michaelangelo, those Hendrix albums are obscure. Unless you're a major Hendrix fan. I'm a bit of a fan, and I like his studio records fine, but I'm not at all familiar with those albums...and I don't think I'm a rare case in saying that.

re: Have a Nice Day--yeah, I wasn't asking you to justify your omissions (not totally), just pointing out some great records I thought you missed.

Incidentally, I think my favourite two records of 1970 are probably one from your list and one from my shorter one: "The Love You Save" and "Tighter Tighter."

s woods, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

...the latter of which would no doubt strike a lot of people as unbearably sunny and wimped-out--it's like the fakest soul record ever.

s woods, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Scott, it doesn't matter whether it's obscure or not. It's one of the best things he ever did, and the only possible 1970 choice (unless I wanted to put "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" which was released as a posthumous single, which I didn't and wouldn't as a matter of policy).

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

< /tiresome pedant>

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That's all fine...we're just looking at 1970 from opposite directions. Literally.

s woods, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, as a guy who likes to nitpick I can't quibble with that list at all; that thing's incredible! Matos, I envy your African record collection. Are a lot of those things from comps?

And yeah I think the list so diligently represents a broad spectrum of non-rock music, that there is certainly room for a track by perhaps the best rock improvisor in the last year of his life.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

nearly everything is from comps, not just African music.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

and I'm sorry to get all huffy there, Scott--I was just surprised to hear it being referred to as obscure! probably because it was one of the cornerstones of my own Hendrix fandom; the Blues comp is still one of my favorite JH discs.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have any of your stuff in a database by release date? I'd like to do one of these but I'm so fucking disorganized (and don't have a lot of dates memorized) I fear it would take forever.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My CDs aren't even in order--they're still in boxes, actually. I just go through them one box at a time, pick out what I need, and start converting.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i've just been doing it mostly by memory, though the internet is a big help (SOMETIMES).

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

from which movie is no 86 from matos? is the soundtrack available?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

don't know, Julio--got it from the Rhino 2CD anthology

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, what happened to "Burning Bridges" by The Mike Curb Congregation and Enoch Light's "Pass And I'll Call You"? Otherwise, great stuff Matos (and scott).

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, Matos, check the usual channels plz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, if you still need something to replace "Tresspasser Part 2", there's always the Ides of March's "Vehicle"...
