Bob Mould is touring as a DJ, spinning deep house.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I would actually go and see that if he read his WCW wrestling scripts over the top.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to read a Mould biography...he's a complicated dude.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Mould always felt like a reluctant figurehead to me, though. I'm not sure he's the best example.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Bill Berry now makes hay for a living.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Tommy Stinson playing with Guns N' Roses.

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob is taking proto-indie-rock revenge on Moby for that Mission of Burma cover

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't the Husker bass guy a chef out in Montana now?

The most important rule in rock: never hook up with Wynona "SoundScan Killer" Ryder. You'll be working at a Guitar Center in six months, sure as shit, if you lay a hand on that harpy.

Andy, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason I still play guitar is because I know Winona Ryder will get around to me eventually.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hi! Welcome to the Hard Rock Cafe, Minneapolis... I'm Dave and I'll be your waiter for the evening..."

Dave Pirner, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

have you heard mould's contribution to the hedwig tribute album? it makes this career move sound unsurprising. now, in the context of his stint as a consultant for wcw ...

maura (maura), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There's one song "Trade" on his album Modulate that actually sounded like a Pat Leonard production or something! I dug it! Most of the album sucked though. He was going for techno and ended up sounding like Pete Townshend or Peter Gabriel '90s stuff.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Greg Ginn now lives for orphan kitties. Definite sign that the 80s rock underground is dead.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

have you heard mould's contribution to the hedwig tribute album?

Yes, it's rancid.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

let's remember that Mission Of Burma reunited recently!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and uh...Sonic Youth is still around I guess. But vampires are like that.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is so kinda depressing that I'm gonna have to go watch Comedy Central to cheer up! and look...Henry Rollins is doing stand up! Oh wait, his anecdotes are long and have weak pay-offs. It's "spoken word."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Deniz Tek became a fighter pilot.... now that's okay, man.

andy, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that one dude's a lawyer now

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

My question is where have you been Mark? I don't think deep-house is an illogical extension of his career at this point.

Let's see: Husker Du to acoustic keyboard chamber-folk, then to MBV-esque noise-pop (not as subtle, but Bob self-admittedly noted Sugar's early material's debt to Loveless), back to quirky singersongwriter pop, then to full-on electronica... and how deep-house as an extension of that is not that far-fetched.

Mind you, I've only heard bits and pieces of this... but many 80s rock underground figures have ventured outside of the guitar/bass/drum configuration as it is entirely in their nature.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The only reason I still play guitar is because I know Winona Ryder will get around to me eventually.
And then she'll leave you for some other geetar player...and you'll slowly discover that alot of your fave small trinkets have been "shoplifted" away.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian MacKaye did finally let SPIN interview him. Though he supposedly yelled "respect the music!" at the writer while driving away. And the writer, Andrew Beaujon, used to be on Teenbeat.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Beaujon co-founded Teenbeat, young Anthony.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Beaujon writes for SPIN now?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

he has for years, Paul.

hstencil, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The last issue of SPIN I purchased was around the time Hello Nasty came out -- it had Mike D. on the cover.

I guess I'd have known if I still read it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Deniz Tek became a fighter pilot.... now that's okay, man.

And wasn't he at least a partial basis for Val Kilmer's character in Top Gun?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't read Spin since before college, Paul, and Andrew had pieces in the mag before then.

hstencil, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

did Tek chomp his teeth at people too?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Rephrase: I guess I'd have known if I'd ever read it on a regular basis.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Tek went on to become a flight surgeon in the navy, yes. The Top Gun filmmakers were involved with his unit. I'm not sure of the direct connection, tho. You can email him for the answer, tho. He's quite accessible online, altho he has moved back to Aussie-land.

Also, Greg Norton became a chef around the Twin Cities, and had his own place around Red Wing. According to Grant Hart, tho, he sold his place this summer, so he might not be cooking anywhere at the moment.

oh yeah, and that dude from X went on to be in movies.

Kingfish Beestick (Kingfish), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

John Doe? He was Amber Waves' bastard ex-husband in Boogie Nights!
