A Van Halen mental exercise...

* Choose either "Van Halen" or "1984".
* Count the number of songs you know from that album
* Now, count the number of songs you know from Van Hagar's entire career.. oh hell, include Gary Sharone or whatever his name is, too.

Which is bigger?

(there's no point to this thread other than to recall Matos and I falling off our chairs laughing trying to think of a song off "OU812" and NOT BEING ABLE TO DO IT!)

I know maybe 4 or 5 each off of those 2 Roth-era albums, and probably at least a dozen Hagar-era songs (including "When It's Love" and "Finish What Ya Started" off OU812!), but this should come as no surprise seeing as I started that Defend The Indefensible: Van Hagar thread a while back.

I can rattle off the entire tracklist of the debut by memory (at least as it appears on the reissue--maybe not in order). I know at least half the tracks from 1984 (which I took forever to get a copy of). But post-Roth VH? I only remember them for one thing:

Crystal Pepsi.

c'mon, it's eeeeeverything.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"OU812" has "Black and Blue," whose lyrics start:

"Slip n' slide, push it in
Bitch sure got the rhythm"

And so say all of us, tap into America!

Gimme those first two discs and it's power-pop-metal euphoria time

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll get a copy for you nate. my friend made this for me a few months back.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, Josh thanks for reminding me of that one...

Lately the track I've been wanting to hear off OU812 again is the Little Feet cover.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The other problem besides the vocalists was the increasing amount of reverb Eddie started adding to the guitars. Later stuff sounds like Dave Gilmour. I sadly predict that Albert Hammond Jr. will start doing the same.

dave q, Thursday, 4 December 2003 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember plenty of Van Hagar but that's just cuz I watched too much MTV in the 90s and I watch too much VH1 Classic now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

don't make me bring up "Poundcake"! oh shit, there i go.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Poundcake was good...almost southern rock for VH

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Poundcake ruled but it was still a victim to the kind of reverb overload dave q refers to, I guess it made it au courant for the time, in keeping w/the "watery metal" of Faith No More but it could have been so much better (maybe EVH had to keep upping the reverb to match the desperate treatments on Hagar's noticeably declining screech?)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Not only is Poundcake great, but so is the song that follows, Judgment Day.

Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain are worse filler than AFU and Sucker In A Three Piece.

Runnin with the devil after the amp forms an eruption which really got me ,
he ain't talking bout love cause i'm the one who cant take Jamie's cryin
I'm about to go Atomic , Punk! She only wants to feel his love tonight ,
like some kind of little dreamer , he's her ice cream man , but i think he's on fire...
She keeps saying you're no good until she sees him dance the night away ,
then she's all hot like " somone get me a doctor " and at the bar ,
it's bottom's up till he realizes that he's gonna be out of love again.
The drums light up the sky and underneath his drum-stool he has a packet of spanish fly
which will knock em D.O.A into women in love, all those beautiful girls !(smooch) .
He stomps on that octave pedal , and the cradle will rock ,
you gotta know that everybody wants some.. fools! The funk is low and tight
like some kind of romeo delight , the audience rides the bull like tora! tora! ,
lovin' all that loss of control, loss of control , loss of control. Some folks cant take the rawk
and decide to take their whiskey home . Now the girls have room to dance,
could this be magic ? how can i say this in a simple rhyme ?
The bass starts pulsing during elec-trick shocks like some kind of back alley half and half on a mean street .
This girls rear is bouncing like it's been in all tha' dirty movies , a sinner's swing so to speak ,
and everyone's gonna wanna hear about it later. . i feel like a roadhouse ape that's been unchained
cause when push comes to shove i'm not gonna be askin " so this is love " ?
if she wants to spend sunday afternoon in the park , im gonna have one foot out the door .
Where have all the good times gone ! some people hate this rock and roll ,
they want to hang em' high! those critics need to git their ass to a cathedral
where they can keep their precious secrets , fearing some nefarious intruder ,
strutting and fretting hoping to see some pretty woman (oh! )
these buttered crutons of hate need to be dancing in the street
where people kiss and play their little guitars,
i betcha big bad bill will be sweet william by then .
These machavellis of the pen need to get the full bug out of their ass , to them i say happy trails sucka!
everyone feels like it's 1984 , with their back against the record machine ,
the Fatt-bottom girls dance and the shit does jump ,
it's hotter than panama in this biich.
Your'e the top Jimmy! People love your stuff like they have seen some drop dead legs , dig that steam !
they are hot for teacher! Don't worry cause I'll wait
Van Halen makes the girl gone bad and turns the roadhouseinto a house of pain .

darth nader, Friday, 5 December 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That guitar reverb isn't half as ick as that drum sound on songs like "Poundcake". Yuck.
