Just because Nas hates Jay-Z or are they both like "whatever".

Solange Knowles, Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope so.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Kelis is a robot!!!!

*runs away and hides under a desk*

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 4 December 2003 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's try this again, losers... can we just possibly once for one time NOT pretend that Black People were made of circuits and computer chips for ONE MINUTE!? What is it about hip hop and R&B that makes you obsessed with dehumanizing Black Wymyn? Is it because you are threatened by the SOUL of the Black Womyn that you must pretend that she has none? Is that your fantasy world perfect girl? A ROBOT GIRLFRIEND NAMED BEYONCE? YOU ARE CRAZY!!!!

Solange, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he's referring to the interview where kelis referred to beyonce as a 'soulless automaton'

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, Solange, are you like an ILM regular that having some fun putting us all on?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Wymyn: just like women, but ROBOTIC!

briania, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

What I want to know is if that's REALLY Solange Knowles posting...and why the hell would she even freakin' care what Kelis or Nas think?!

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Solange is obviously a put-on. No way could any real person be so goofy.

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Solange, do you like Ya Kid K?

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

technotronic wins!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ya Kid K's got SOUL!!!!!

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

And yeah, I think it's really COOL when black people pretend that they're made of circuits and computer chips! Afrika Bambaataa and Roger Troutman and Juan Atkins made whole careers out that, almost!

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's not completely unreasonable to think kelis is a robot programmed by the neptunes, anyway.

brian badword (badwords), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

kodwo eshun to thread already

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"solange" needs to buy some gary numan records already!

and if we really want to discuss stereotypes, i would guess that the "black people as robots" stereotype is relatively less unfair and damaging than the "black as poor, authentic, real, gritty, rhythmic" sterotype cf the active verb "pretend" in Chuck's post.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

well at least you are now willing to admit that the "black people as robots" stereotype is a very real one -- and one that's worth fighting against. Thanks, Aaron! Peace.

Solange, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

are you suggesting that afrika bambaataa, roger troutman, and juan atkins really are made of circuits and computer chips?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh..not sure how my post implied said stereotype, if that's what you're implying (though maybe you're not, I'm not sure). I mean, I often like when German people like Kraftwerk and Japanese people like the Yellow Magic Orchestra pretend they're made out of circuits and computer chips, too, you know? ("Pretend" is the right verb because, uh, they're NOT, you know?)(And I think it's superstitous to believe that *anyone* has a "soul", Solange, for whatever that's worth.)

Also, I left out Mantronix. Whose records Solange should ALSO buy.

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

well at least you are now willing to admit that the "black people as robots" stereotype is a very real one -- and one that's worth fighting against. Thanks, Aaron! Peace.

This is maybe the greatest thing ever written.

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT PICTURE OF MY UNCLE LOU?????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks DAN! It's nice to know some of this is sinking in to some of you people. WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Solange, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha (re: "uncle lou")

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

go solange! i think between us we can educate some of these people, let them know this is not acceptable in this day and age

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

YES! Let's move forward! Artistic freedom above all else.

Solange, Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

fritzsolange you need a vacation, honey.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no what i meant chuck is that the word active verb "pretend" implies choice. that is a good thing. whether the people are or are not "really" computer chips.

i am not doing a very good job of explaining myself.

the other sterotype that is listed goes quite well with the whole ideal of "soul". but if poverty=authenticity=soul, and soul is the ideal, well, follow the lines backwards. poverty doesnt have the same ring of self-determintation as "pretending to be robots". that is why, if the robot sterotype exists, it is certainly not the most pernicious one involving (black) music.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

whoops, my finger slipped.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

so wait - roger troutman didn't have a choice to pretend to be made of computer chips?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I often like when German people like Kraftwerk and Japanese people like the Yellow Magic Orchestra pretend they're made out of circuits and computer chips, too, you know? ("Pretend" is the right verb because, uh, they're NOT, you know?)

What? Chuck you just made me really sad :(

I'm staying well out of this one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Def Jux have that Return of the Robots DVD? They are part of the black people are robots movement.....wait, though, the main dude is white so he's probably forcing the black folks on the label to act like robots, which is oppresive.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i knew it!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My mate Ben would love this.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Kool Keith is still seeing robots.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Kool Keith isn't robot black people rap, he's fake Ken doll black people who are spacemen rap - at least on Black Elvis/Lost in Space.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Stargard become robots in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

fritzsolange you need a vacation, honey.

Quite.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean every single discussion of Beyonce or Kelis will devolve into a discussion of robots?

TS: Beyonce and Kelis vs Robot Overlords

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean every single discussion of Beyonce or Kelis will devolve into a discussion of robots?

Well, it's certainly a more interesting topic than their music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

alex do you have an alarm that goes off when stuff other than 80s rock is being discussed?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Does this mean every single discussion of Beyonce or Kelis will devolve into a discussion of robots?

I think the short answer is yes.

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Ja can someone showing us the way to pretty american girl who is made of robot parts for going to the club and perhaps dance?

Allyzay, Saturday, 15 May 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

what's interesting to me here is the revelation that kelis is selling saxophones.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

also when I first saw this thread, I thought it said "is kelis meant to be beyonce" which of course is a YES.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Like giant-sized Micronauts, they're fitted with interchangeable parts.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the interchangable part is my tongue

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently Kelis said Outkast were shit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no, that was ILM

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No I'm serious! In the same news flash it said that Outkast were planning to release an all-rap album by the end of the year - but i don't think ILM controls a crappy video clip show on Australian tv, regardless of the weird synchronicity.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Clearly Strongo and Kelis are made for each other.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Strongo Nas?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Poor Tim, always the last to know.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No wonder he hates The Black Album so much

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"blacks as 'poor, authentic, real, gritty, rhythmic' "

surely such an awful sentiment has never surfaced on ilm; and surely not as a disingenuous counter-discourse.

mike bott, Saturday, 15 May 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)
