Holy crap!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i really really really hope fountains of wayne win best new artist for obv. reasons

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

So they won't have to resort to penning theme songs for Comedy Central shows featuring vomiting muppets?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

so they'll fall of the face of the earth

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah.

Who were some of the previous winners of that, anyways? Besides Christopher Cross?

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

starland vocal band

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Marvin Hamlisch wasn't a new artist in 1975! He did the score for Take the Money and Run!

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1961: Bob Newhart?!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Alicia Keys won it last time, right? I'd love for her to disappear. I can't fucking stand her.

I like FoW, for the record. It's for the best that they lose that one. I'd give it to Sean Paul, cos I want him to disappear the most. I can't stand that guy's tone deaf singing.

Record Of The Year is a pretty good race, eh? The only song there that I don't like/don't think is worthy is that crappy Black Eyed Peas song. I'd prefer Eminem not to win because that song is just a little too old now, and he's had enough acolades by now. Coldplay's song is great, and I wouldn't be let down if it won, but it's really "Crazy In Love" Vs. "Hey Ya!" in a dead heat, isn't it?

I'd go for "Hey Ya!" and hope that Beyonce wins another category.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well......it's not always a curse, is it?

Xtina, Mariah, Sade, The Carpenters, Bette Midler, CSN, and The fucking Beatles all dodged the curse.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Sheryl Crow too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You just know Best New Artist is going to Evanescence.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That would be appropriate.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeez... that list of BNA winners isn't as bad as I thought it would be.

And as much as I agree that "Where is the Love" is direly icky, I still think it's funny that two or three years ago I would've never seen a RotY nomination for the Black Eyed Peas. (Of course, without the Stankonia reception, I never would've seen OutKast being the Sheryl Crow/Paul Simon/Stevie Wonder of the '00s, either.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Bob Newhart was the biggest recording artist of 1961! of course he won!

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 4 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, so that last SEVEN best new artist winners have been women, and nine of the last ten??? I had no idea, not that I ever pay attention. I do remember A Taste of Honey winning in 1979, though; I think they were up against, like, Elvis Costello and the Cars and Joe Jackson, and, um, Steve Forbert or somebody, and since "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is the best song any of those people have ever done, they may well have deserved it. Anyway. Evanescence or Heather Headley, obviously, right? Who the hell is Heather Headley???? Actually, Kogan taped me a song by her, and I liked it. But I STILL don't know who she is.

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why are Fountains of Wayne being considered for "Best New Artist" when their firs album came out in 1996?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it has to do with the first time you hit the pop charts? I mean, Shelby Lynne had been around for DECADES, almost!

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how Richard Marx is nominated for a big one this year. That's so cool. Maybe they're making up for when they shut out "Hazard"?

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

of course FOW are up against 50 cent, who hit the chart in 1999, and sean paul, who hit the chart with two different songs in 2000. i think by "best new artist" they mean "best new money in the bank for one of our labels." i fact, i'm pretty sure that's how the award is described in the official guidelines.

Category 4 - Best New Artist
(For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first
recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss the old, clueless-er Grammys, back when they were giving metal awards to Jethro Tull. What am I supposed to make fun of here? The nominees for Best Pop Instrumental Album? No fair.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pissed off that Jason Mraz was overlooked for a Best New Artist nom.

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Thing is, Jethro Tull WAS metal. (Sort of.)

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

and of course this year FOW established their public identify as witty and fun-loving power-poppers who hang around with half-naked models who used to be married to more famous fun-loving pop stars. a previously undeveloped public identity, and one the grammys could therefore not have previously rewarded.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, "Milkshake" got a nomination! And that just came out last week or something! Okay, maybe not. But they really are on top of things these days, huh? Basically, though, I agree with Keith -- Most likely the Big Milli Vanilli scare fucked everything up, I guess.

chuck, Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Besides, Chuck, Tull won in the late 80s! They probably beat out Teena Marie for that award.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

they beat out Iggy Pop actually

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Do I remember "Radiation Vibe" doing better than it actually did? FoW is only recently shitty, I guess.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 4 December 2003 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)
